Guest guest
Sloan, I was infuriated by the article you posted by Dr. Coplan where he argues there is no such thing as an epidemic in autism and proclaims changes in the DSM have caused increases in the prevalence of autism. I was so angered by his article and stupidity that I sent the following comment to his site: Dr. Coplan, I am saddened that as a doctor you are doing harm with your articles. Rather than debating whether we have an epidemic or not, you need to recognize that individuals with Autism are medically ill and need treatment. Once the medical community recognizes that most individuals with Autism have immune system that are not working properly and treats their medical issues, recovery from Autism will become the norm rather than the exception. You should be focusing on the fact that we are talking about is not a debilitating psychiatric disorder without any hope for recovery. Autism is a medical condition caused in most part by an immune system that is not working properly and possible underlying retroviruses. My son is living proof that children can recover if Autism is treated medically. My son was diagnosed when he was four by the leading authority on Autism in Minnesota. This psychiatrist told us would never be okay and would probably end up in a group home or institution. This doctor was also not up to date on Autism and fortunately her prognosis was wrong. The only institution is in today is the university he currently attends on a merit-based academic scholarship. We used intensive medical, educational and behavioral interventions to help him. Today, does all the things the doctors told me he would never do. He lives in the dorm five hours away with four other guys who don't know he ever had autism. At school, he studies mechanical engineering and is number two in his class. joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and is president of the Jewish Student Association. He drives, has a ton of friends, and even has a girlfriend (who would have seen that one coming?) But more importantly, is happy. If anyone would have told me this was possible when he was little, I never would have believed them. Incredible as it seems, this is the same child who wanted to spend his days plugging in a portable radio into every outlet in the house over and over again. When my son entered kindergarten at almost six years old, he was in the third percentile for speech. By that time Dr. Goldberg of Tarzana, California had been treating medically for about a year. had a full-time aide in his classroom to help him in school. By the third grade, my son tested in the 85th percentile for speech and by fifth grade no longer received any services or assistance at school. But he still wasn't recovered and quite weird socially. This was a long road to recovery and not a simple fix. But is an example of what is possible for children with autism when they receive proper medical and behavioral interventions. It wasn't until he was away at college and on his own that he fully caught up socially. We need to change the paradigm and create a world where parents can take their children to any doctor, in any city, in any country for treatment of this medical condition that affects the vast majority of children misdiagnosed with " Autism. " Instead of arguing that autism is not increasing, wouldn't it be better for you to spend your time writing articles about how these children are ill? We need hard science and viable treatment plans to overcome this disease. Only then will the potentially dangerous " cures of the week " desperate parents try to help their children be stopped. With proper medical treatment, recovery will become possible for these seemingly " impossible " children. We have work to do to make the world and the medical communities understand that what our children are facing is not a psychiatric disorder, but a treatable medical immune problem. My hope is that what happened for becomes the norm rather than the exception. Please be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Something must be done because there are kids " NOT " getting better every day.
