Does it have vit D or magnesium? I am SO tired of taking huge pills! But remember, you can only absorb calcium in small amounts.......a " glug " might be wasted! You must take it several times per day, and vit D is necessary, too. Possibly magnesium, for some people. Also the TYPE of calcium is important. My gastric dr. recommends Citrical.....most absorbable. Pris ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
I eat a lot of green vegetables, too, including a lot of raw ones. For lunch nearly every day I eat a big salad. I make high fiber muffins from wheat bran, oat bran, barley, rye, and other grains that I buy from a working mill. I eat one of these muffins for breakfast every day. I eat nuts every day. I keep myself well hydrated. Plus now the Benefiber and the stool softeners. I am pretty regular with all of this, but it's still far from an ideal situation. Guest guest
Just a comment and I'm not saying that constipation is not a problem, I realize it is, especially with pain medication. When I was diagnosed with RA 4 years ago, I had diarrhea as well. The diarrhea continued regardless what I did. Then I was put on steroids for the RA and the diarrhea cleared up. Went off the steroids, diarrhea worse than ever, I almost had no control at all. It was getting difficult to work. I went to a Gastro doctor and he did a colonoscopy, came out and said everything was fine, see you in 10 years. I'm half under anesthetic, but I still say, wait, what about my diarrhea? He said, we will see what your biopsies say. That was it. Three weeks later got a call from his office that I needed to come in asap. I figured cancer. I have Collageous Colitis, an auto immune disease that I like to call the fat colitis. Most colitis's cause you to lose weight, not this one!! I have inflammation between the layers of the colon which causes the colon to not absorb the fluid from the bowel. Sounds easy , right, NOT! That is all the colon does, other than act as a storage unit. I take 12 pills a day (which I order from Canada) 4 pills 3X daily. I am always raw, very sore. I use preparation H suppositories and ointment as well as very expensive ointment to be able to be in public and sit down. I have to know where every bathroom is in any place I go because I just don't know... I do think UC and Crones are worse colitis's, but this isn't fun, especially with the RA with it. Anyway, my point in all this rambling is BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! With us and our immune systems, it can get worse! Colleen
Guest guest
, If you want a simple answer that is not medicinal at all, try putting a dash of prune juice in your orange juice every morning. It will keep you regular and is good for you in a lot of ways. Prune juice is high in iron and good for you and you do not taste it at all in the orange juice. I have done that during my life when I used to have bouts of constipation (now I tend to have the diarrhea since the RA). thought you might like a simple, non-medicinal natural way to beat the constipation. It really works and does not cause all that nasty cramping, etc. Good luck. Tracie --------------------------------- Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. Try the free Beta. Guest guest
Thank you all for the good ideas. I will see which ones I can try and will work. Some of these ideas I have tried and they failed, others I haven't tried yet. Looks like now I have some work to do. For those of you with diarhea, I am sorry you have to go through that. Constipation is just as bad in a different way.
Guest guest
Hi , I take Movicol, that really helps. I live in the UK so I don't know if you can get it, but its worth a try. Hope you;re feeling better, it can be so uncomfortable. Sue [ ] Constipation I don't take very many pain pills, maybe 1 or 2 a day max and that isn't even every day. Well I am having trouble with constipation even with that about. Does anyone have anything they take that works? I have tried Citrucel and Metamucil and it just isn't cutting it. I don't want to get on something that will make me laxative dependent but want to get regular. The pharmacist said Fiber con and all those are pretty simular. Any help would be great. Guest guest
My daughter was constipated for years. I give her OxyPowder. It is ozonated magnesium which releases oxygen to get rid of constipation. If one takes a lot it clears everything out, but in smaller doses works for maintenance. > > I don't take very many pain pills, maybe 1 or 2 a day max and that > isn't even every day. Guest guest
Any kind of magnesium should help with constipation. Magesium citrate is a laxative sold OTC. I take 3000mg calcium daily and the magnesium I take balances it out. Debbie L > > My daughter was constipated for years. I give her OxyPowder. Guest guest
I have had excellent luck with increasing my water intake as Dana's page reccomends. I try to keep a small amount of liquid coming in all the time. I do around 3-4 oz/30 min. Another thing pertaining to moisture intake - I have been picking foods with higher water content where possible and I have been prepping dry foods as soups/porridges/mashes/etc. Fiber was an issue for me, because I wasn't getting enough soluble fiber (which holds on to liquids while the stools get compacted). Too much insoluble fiber in ratio to soluble can also cause an issue. And last but not least, don't deny the urge to deficate. I find I am almost guarenteed to get a dry stool if I put off running to the bathroom because I'm busy with something else. -Lana On 6/28/07, danasview <danasview@...> wrote: > > > > > > We are treating my son for yeast with diflucan and nystatin. Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to the list, but I have found something homeopathic that is sure to keep anyone regular and is said to be a detox for the whole body. It is called Dr. 's Holy Tea. It cost $10 for a 2 pack of tea bags, but it makes a gallon that would last a 3 year old a couple of weeks since he would only need to drink a couple of onces a day. I have personally used it and know many other people who have. I also have both of my boys on it to keep them regular (3 and 5 years old). Google it to find somewhere to order it if you are interested. I have someone local that I can buy it from, so I don't have a website to give you. > > Hi > > My 3 year old has chronic constipation. My ped. told me to give him 1/2 a senekot tablet to get rid of the constipation and give him Miralax to get him " moving in the right direction again " . Since then, I have been reading about the potential issues with Miralax...what is another alternative for him that you would recommend? I would like to get him healed! We just began enzymes this week. Potty training as you can imagine is a nightmare. BTW - he is not on ASD, but his 5 year old brother is. > > Thanks. > Carla > >

Guest guest
I swear by mineral oil. It is messy but clears the problem up. Then use rewards for daily BM. I also schedule the BM after dinner. She is in the habit now and needs very little cues. But occassionaly she gets a little constipated and then cannot go. I think from years of Miralax with withholding has left her a little stretched out. That is why I do high levels of mineral oil to get it out. But then she has a week with leaking oil. I have been trying to teach her to watch her water intake. I also give her OxyPowder for daily maintenance. > > Hi > > My 3 year old has chronic constipation. Guest guest
Liz, constipation is a constant issue for our daughter. First, bananas always constipated my older son when he was younger. So, you might want to exclude them. You need to go heavy on the liquids since hasn't gone in five days. Warm liquids (soup) helps encourage a movement. Also, to help the immediate problem, I would try mineral oil which will take a couple/few days to work. We have a prescription for miralax, but to be honest, I prefer not to use it. One time when my daughter was seriously constipated, the doctor suggested milk-a-magnesia which did work like a charm and didn't cause discomfort. For maintenance, I have found lots of liquids (again she loves soups), mangoes are great (aren't citrus, so may work for you), lots of veggies-find some veggie your child likes-my daughter likes salads with the artichoke hearts that come in a vinaigrette (see costco),cut celery sprinkled with balsamic vinegar, cut cucumbers with salt, anise, etc. Also, pumpkin is great for constipation (I believe sweet potatoes too). We roast pumpkin in the oven with butter, but I heard canned pumpkin is a great laxative too. Good luck, Carolyn **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
I am so happy she pooped. It can be so dangerous. We ended up in the emergency room one time because of it. Also, for my daughter, any time she did have a seizure, she was constipated for a while and I think the toxins made her temp elevate which in turn caused the seizure. So, getting that poop out is always good. Carolyn **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
It would be great if Josh ate cookies - constipation is a battle we've been fighting on and off for his whole life (and he's 91/2 years old now!). What I've found works is apricots, pear juice, prunes, dates, fig newtons, increased water, and exercise. Since he doesn't like cookies (getting him to eat a fig newton is a trick), the Metamucil cookies never went over big. I do occasionally have to resort to Benefiber which I add to his milk or juice - 2-3 tsps daily. What always does the trick, though, is pear juice and/or prunes/prune juice. Prunes work so well that I have to mix the prune juice with apple juice or something like that. And, I cook up the dried prunes to soften them, smash them up a bit, and use them instead of jelly on a PBJ. Josh loves it! 2 or 3 prunes for a couple of days and he's moving along just fine! Guest guest
April, I feel your pain too.Our daughter is will hold the poop in because she is afraid to pass it. Even when it is soft, she has an issue. Sorry to be so graphic. We have been in that dire circumstance when we tried an enema, and had to restrain her. I know how horrible that is. We actually never really had any success with enemas, so stopped that. I hope it all works out well for you too. Carolyn from NJ **************Start the year off right. Guest guest
Carolyn, First of all, your genuine concern is the best. Warning about Milk of Magnesia....aluminum. We can't do it. She pooped and here is our story. This is my NT kid but fluoroid e and possible metals are an issue as is celiac: She pooped and said it did not hurt at all. We do fiber and all the rest so I was panicking. (I actually have her on a fiber supplement per the GI so this was scary). Couple things were likely at play. The bean flour has protein in it which she was lacking and her body likely wanted to hold onto it. She is finally eating meat and that likely slowed digestion. All the new soaps are natural mercury chelators and mercury strips the body of A....she ate 5 jars of sweet potato (450% RDA of A which she likely does not get enough of as I don't supplement it), asked for a massage, and quietly left, went upstairs. I asked her to come down to go outside and she said " First you have to come upstairs to see my big poopy and it did not hurt a bit. " The not hurting makes me think she needs more A as her poop hurt and was hard when she was pooping daily. Liz > > Liz, constipation is a constant issue for our daughter. Guest guest
We have a constipation issue and I have read that many kids have issues with bowel retention and sensory issues but many kids that have some LD have major bowel issues in general. Our issues have been the frequency of bowel is actually related to our son's fear of the poop being yucky and gross (his words) and he freaks out even seeing our dog poop. So once we had off pull ups at 3.5 he would only run outside and poop in the playhouse and when it got called and he turned four yrs old he began poopin in his underwear and will not sit to poop. He tells us he will need to pee and acts upset and scared when he sees he has messes. It's a major issue. We had him to a Pediatric GI specialist who has never worked with Autistic kids per say but did see a few. He has had success with Miralax (which we did not have any luck) and now a prescribed ped laxative called constulose. The goal is for our son to pass normal stool 3X a week but so far we have not managed the correct dose and have only done 1X week. I have eliminated rice milk, bananas, lots of bread or breaded foods with limited success. We pray that this problem is one of many temporary phases that he will learn from and we grow from but from where we currently stand it's frustrating and upsetting. Having to restrain your kid to give an enema is enough to make you want to run out for a beer or a good therapist! April in NJ
Guest guest
OK not to beat a dead horse BUT..... my NT daughter has basically been constipated since about 3mo old. I finally ditched *most* milk and milk products in her diet in october and made a concentrated effort to increase her fruit/veggie intake and she is now pooping everyother day. Her stools are still " hard " and " large " but we are all much happier now. After learning so much from you all I made an appt with with a " wellness consultant " at the holistic store and met her today. I have decided to start her on a probiotic, calcium supp, and cod liver oil. I am tempted to use the suggested enzymes for icecream or pizza " cheats " but am reluctant to.....I'm not sure why other then to say she is not " allergic " to milk in my mind just sensitive so the probiotic should help heal the antibotic damage, the cod liver oil should help move the bowls along, and the calcium suppliment speaks for itself. I just am feeling like this is all a little to " alternative " for me.....time will tell. > > We have a constipation issue and I have read that many kids have > issues with bowel retention and sensory issues but many kids that > have some LD have major bowel issues in general.
