Guest guest
My son is 8 years old and going into the 3rd grade. He has been labeled Pervasive Developmental Delay,ADHD, Oppositional defiant Disorder, OCD, etc...looking at Aspergers. He is the most creative little boy I know. I call him my artist, and he is fascinated with military history and ARMY. Army everything...and an imagination so incredible. He can make odd things out of just things we throw away. He loves cutting and tearing things up. The sensation seeking...always bored and needs activities none stop. He loves to sit down and draw and will do this for a very long time and things will be in such detail. Unfortunately at this time he is really obsessed with ARMY stuff and he is drawing WWII soldiers...Americans VS Germans and there is alot of violence in them....soldiers being shot and killed. I am having a horrible time keeping him under control. I am a single mother. I have two boys, he is the oldest, the youngest lives with his father. I try to do everything to keep him happy. I give in, and let him get whatever he wants. We go to the store, I get him something because I dont want to deal with a melt down. If I do something wrong, I immediately try to fix it so he doesn't get into this horrible mood where he says VERY hateful and hurtful things to me. I know he doesn't understand, but I'm trying to express to him that it hurts my feelings. He doesn't care...tells me he isn't sorry...If I apologize first. Very mean to me. He is on Vyvance and Risperdone. I am trying my hardest. I take him to counseling: group social skills therapy once a week, therapist once a month, and NP every two or so months (medicines refilled, etc). I don't know what I am doing wrong or what I need to do. I am getting him a full evaluation done through a local rehabilitation center. This won't take place for another 6 months or so. He gets over stimulated and i wish I could learn when his threshold is...I really haven't delved into this like I should have. I guess been in denial. Any suggestions or experience sharing would be great. I really don't have anyone that fully understands this...and even yet...I am not fully aware of everything AS is about. I am still learning and reading...wanting to get my son in the right services, seeking out support groups, and thought I might get some good leads on things here. Guest guest
, Strep was a problem for my son also. He had strep so often that eventually the antibiotics didn't work on it anymore. Whenever he got strep I got strep. We were always ill. We had his tonsils and adenoids out when he was in first grade. It was one of the best things I ever did for his immune system. He was no longer constantly sick and the snoring like a freight train was gone as a result of the adenoids being taken out. This was one of the times Dr. G and I disagreed about what to do. I think he realized how big of a ordeal it was to get over this operation and I was ignorant. When the ear nose and throat doctor said it was a ten day recovery, it was a ten day recovery. But the results were worth it. And the long term benefit to his immune system was definitely worth it. Without tonsils and adenoids he was a much healthier kid and we saw many gains at that time.
