Guest guest
we also have a daughter on Tenex, and I'm not so sure it controls her behavior as much as sedates her. One whole tablet had her asleep in class, so we only give her a half in the morning. Unusually, she's also on Clonidine at night. These are variations on the same formula, but the Clonidine seems much more sedating, and she needs this to sleep. With the Tenex, she was waking at 3AM. There's alot of controversy about giving these drugs to children. I know without it, we were nonfunctioning, and with it, she can go to school and she can sleep at night. Guest guest
Thanks for responding to my post. I have noticed that when he misses a dose he doesn't sleep as well. He will wake up around 4 am or so. If he takes his doses he tends to sleep till an appropriate time and also go to bed at one. Otherwise, he wants to be up late as well. I am just afraid also of what these meds will do in the long term. But the relief it is bringing as far as us getting more sleep is nice. Take care, in La. elan214@... wrote: > we also have a daughter on Tenex, and I'm not so sure it controls her > behavior as much as sedates her. Guest guest
Hi Group, My son was prescribed Tenex to help him sleep. The psychiatrist says there are few side effects for a child without other conditions such as hypertension, etc. I decided to give him 3mg of melatonin and am having good results after his peditrician informed me that her daughter had been prescribed the same medication and she couldn't wake her up the next morning. Anyone ever used this particular drug? What were the side effects? Just curious in case the melatonin ceases working. Guest guest
Hi, Sheila! Melatonin does not " stop " working, but I think that a certain tolerance can develop. The dose can be increased without causing any harm. It is non-toxic, and does not affect the body's natural supply. There is time-release Melatonin available now, also. I use it, and it really works. Also, my e-mail is back to normal now, so you can write to me privately about services in N.O. at tsteinbach4@... . It is in the same family as clonidine. We recently did a trial for to see if it would reduce his anxiety and help his sleep. No help so we stopped. We have used clonidine in the past for behavioral issues. Karyn
Guest guest
This is a high blood pressure med that has been around for years. Some of us use it for behavior control. For it has caused him to not have control of his urine. We are back in pull-ups after being potty trained for 2 years. But we are trying oxybutin for this--only a few days into this med. & Garry, parents of (11 ds), (10 ds), JJ (8 ds/autism/celiac), (7 ds/ADHD/Celiac), and Esther (5 ds). Guest guest
, to throw my two cents in, I think is absolutely right about the gluten-casein free diet for your child. many have been helped by it. Evan was not, or least not that was plain to us. I thought the diet might help him because he ate a lot of dairy and cereal. If you are checking into the enzymes, you might want to check out www.kirkmanlabs.com They have many articles on the supplements they carry that help children with autism. We started using NAET with Evan but switched over to www.allergyantidotes.com You might want to check out the NAET site. Some people preferred to try and eliminate the allergies rather than try and stay away from the foods. Some eliminate the foods until they can eliminate the allergies. Guest guest
Evan is getting Tenex in pill form. It is a very small pill and right now he is getting 1/4 a pill twice a day. Since he does not swallow pills I put it in a small amount of liquid to dissolve and give it to him that way. Evan's Tenex is suppose to be raised up to 1/2 tablet twice a day and then to 1 tablet (1 mg) twice a day. Betty ----- Original Message ----- From: <pkuenstler@...> > Is the Tenex a liquid or a pill? Guest guest
My son has tenex ( Guanfacine ) for Hyeractivity & Impulse contol. Is this the same medication? Giving this is to kids for Impulse control is like it's secondry usage. primarily it is used to reduce blood presssure. It's side effect is to induce sleepiness. I have never heard of a pediatrician prescribing Tenex for sleep. Seems a bit overkill. It does have long term side effects. What about melatonin ? Guest guest
Hi , Tenex is basically a long acting clonidine (alpha agonist) it has worked extremely well for our son, it does not induce sleep as well as clonidine but works just as well for hyperactivity and restlessness. We used clonidine first but it wears off in about 6-7 hours so we had a very wide awake little guy a 3-4 am. High recommended from our point of view > > Has anyone ever given their children Tenex for sleep? Our ped. gave > this to us for our daughter. Guest guest
My son has been taking Tenex for about, well maybe almost 3 weeks now. It has made him falling asleep more difficult, but he sleeps fine after falling asleep. I give it to him as soon as he gets home from school now so it does not interfere with sleep, around 3:45. I believe this drug might actually be helping him. His teacher says he's been terrific in school with his programs. I'm going to stick with it for a little while longer to see if it actually does help. I'm a bit of a skeptic with drugs and all these supplements parents give their kids. Nothing has helped my boy except schooling and the methyl shots that he has once a week. I dont give him any medications except the methyl, which is a supplement really. I cant even remember how to spell that long word. Other than that he takes allergy meds and singulair. The Tenex though I believe made my son constipated. He suffers from colitis and has had about as many solid stools in his lifetime (8 years old) that I can count on my own fingers. So this was actually interesting that it binded him. I'm not sure if there is a connection there. I guess that remains to be seen also. Tenex is a medication for hypertension. My son's doc said that some children are responding nicely to it. Guest guest
You know I was told that it can induce sleep when Sal first started it. I found that it kept him awake longer at night. So instead of falling asleep around 9 for the night, he was up until after 11 some nights. Thats when I started giving it to him a few hours earlier. Guest guest
My son started Tenex about 2 years ago at age 10 for his Tourette's to control his ticks. Tenex is a blood pressure drug. They accidentally found that it works for Tourette's as well. Since it is a BP drug, it makes people tired initially. But after awhile the body gets used to it, then that symptom subsides. Initially my son took a half of 1mg. It knocked him on his rear end. He became very pale and he fell asleep. Needless to say, I was very worried. I watched him carefully. Eventually he got used to it and I slowly worked up to his therapeutic dose of 1mg twice a day. It took about two weeks. My physician said it also helps with ADHD. That's where the impulsivity control comes in.. I suggest you start the drug on a weekend when your child is not expected to go to school or go anywhere. For my son Tenex has turned to be a great drug for him. His ticks are gone. It even controls his mild ADHD. I even stopped giving him Strattera. Strattera was too much. He had no personality and was a total grouch. Tenex allows him to control himself. Guest guest
My daughter has been on Tenex for about two months now and it has helped her a lot with impulsivity and anger management/rage sort of issues. She currently takes 1 mg/3x a day. Prior to that, she had taken a couple of different atypical antipsychotics for the same issues, and although they also worked very well for her, they caused a lot of weight gain. We initially noticed quite a bit of sleepiness with her on the Guanfacine (generic Tenex), but that went away fairly quickly and we haven't seen any real side effects. I know that the doctor has to monitor her blood pressure because it is actually a drug developed to treat high blood pressure, but again we have seen no untoward side effects. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me. My daughter is on Zoloft as well, and Seroquel, although we are weaning off the latter. -lisa ehmke audrey@... > My daughter's psychiatrist recommended that she start Tenex for her > impulsivity.
