Guest guest
My 9 yo just started Tenex on February 17th--the day he was suspended. He takes .5 mg each morning and night. He slept really well the first week. He said he doesn't feel angry all the time anymore. I don't know how long term this will be. I think the Zoloft is starting to kick in, too. He started that Feb. 6th. > Jackie

Guest guest
Well it was either Tenex or Clonidine which basically does the same thing but there are a few differences. Guest guest
Leighanne, My son has been on Tenex for a little over a year and a half now, and he has really made so much progress since taking it. Just be sure to check his blood pressure and keep a log to make sure it stays in the normal range. My son has had no health-related problems with it, and it really helped with his impulse control. Guest guest
What's considered "normal" range on a child's BP. I know that an adult anything over 80 for the bottom number is considered borderline hypertensive. Is this true for children as well. Should I make sure it stays below 80? Guest guest
I notice a calmer, more focused child. The issue with regular Tenex is he seemed to metabolize the morning dose quite fast. It wouldn't last through the school day. Intuniv gives us a calmer, more focused child throughout the day. I also don't hear him in his room late at night, which I used to before Intuniv. He still has moments of self stim behavior, but there more in direct response to stimuli, mostly electronic, such as a video. Other than that, it's mostly gone. Guest guest
Thanks Robyn! We have some sensory seeking (mostly pressure seeking) behavior that seems to be less with Tenex although not totally gone. I will ask the doctor about Intuniv. I understand it may reduce sensory behavior as it dilates the blood vessels hence increasing the blood flow in the brain stem. Do you know if Intuniv works in a similar way? Thanks, Kay ________________________________ From: Robyn & Greg Coggins <rngcoggs@...> Sent: Mon, December 20, 2010 8:26:44 PM Subject: Re: Re: Tenex I notice a calmer, more focused child. Guest guest
My understanding is that Intuniv is a extended release version of Tenex (guanfacine). Guanficine is the main ingredient. Guest guest
My husband said that they use tenex for patients with high blood pressure as well and so that was his concern if we gave that medicine to our daughter. He also worry about the heart rate. he is an ICU nurse supervisor and so he has a different opinion and he see trauma everyday. I know some kids that are taking tenex and they are doing fine. Guest guest
That is definitely a valid concern. I brought that up with the first doc who prescribed it. He reassured me that it was safe and has been used quite extensively (he did address BP but I don't remember what he said). It is usually given in very low doses. Before the switch to Intuniv, Noah was getting 1/2 of a 1mg tablet, twice per day. Guest guest
Hi , We are in Canada and have used Tenex for the past 4 years or so. It is not available in Canada so we cross the closest border and pick it up at a Walgreens that Dr. G`s office faxes into for us. It is not an expensive drug at all and at a dose of one quarter of a tablet in the am and one eighth of a tablet just before dinner, it only costs us, I believe in the range of about $30 for 3 months. I am sure you could get a US pharmacy to ship it to you, however you do need a US doc to write the prescription. I however need to caution you that this is all part of Dr. G`s protocol and not something that you should be piece mealing together or adding in with other medications or supplements without following the protocol. Dr. G monitors each childs health so closely and carefully that it really is not right to take little pieces of what has worked from the whole of what other parents have used to help their kids. This s a whole big picture and not medication by symptom.` I feel obligated to cautiously write this as the whole underlying immune system correction, that is at the heart of the philosophy of Dr. Goldberg is very complicated and not something that a parent advocate could reproduce for themselves without the expertise of either Dr. Goldberg, Dr. or Kathy on who have all been at this clinically for some time now. In order to be successful parents need to either commit to the philosophies and success of Dr. Goldberg completely or not do the protocol. A bit of this and a piece of that will NOT work and will not assist the child`s immune system to heal their body and brain. Then folks think that the protocol doesn`t work because they have not followed his diet accurately, or given all the medications that he recommends, or done the therapies that he also suggests. It is a whole complex package and each part is as important as the other. Guest guest
Thank you, Lori. When I received 's CamKinase score (PANDAS), I was told to treat him here. This came from the NNY Autism Clinic. We were set to leave to see Dr. that coming week. We lost a lot of money in airline tickets, rooms booked, etc. In a way, I wish we did not have the PANDAS score and possibly we would have seen Dr. and have more information to go on. That is not the way it turned out and we paid the monetary price for it. Here in NS he saw a research immunologist who did not believe he had PANDAS/PITANDS or any other serious infection even though he is chronically neutropenic. He has had a positive IGeneX for Lyme which was not taken seriously here in NS either. Our family doctor does believe he has PITANDs and is currently treating with Azithromycin. We are set to check co-infections this week (Bartonella, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis - already tested neg for Babesia). We have been through hell - as all of you have. Sometimes circumstances don't allow you to get to a certain doctor but that doesn't mean that you can't continue to try to help your child using any means you have. Our son has comes leaps and bounds since antibiotic treatment. Hopefully we will be able to help him even further mostly be talking to others (other parents, doctors and other groups) to find out how best to help our son. BTW: We have consulted with Dr. Bouboulis in CT ($500/ .5 hr), Dr. Miranda in CA ($500/hr), and many others along the way. Some have given us great advice (Dr. B told us to test for Mycoplasm pneumonia which had!) and others not so great... It really helps with hyperactivity and is very calming. We recently switched to Intuniv, which is basically the extended release version developed for kids with ADHD. It worked even better. Guest guest
Hi, My son is 6 years old and Dr g asked us to start tenex recently ,when we started his dosage was 1/8 of a tab twice a day and after some time he incresed the dosage to 1/4 of tab twice a day then we saw some negatives like hurting and he is tired sleeping in the afternoon etc so now back to1/4 in morning and 1/8 before bed , All together he is not very hyper still he cant focus for long or do any activity more than 10 mins. Before Dr G we were seeing a dan then he was taking lots of supplements and b12 now it's all most 8 months we r seeing Dr G and we stopped all his earlier medication and started nids diet and valtrex, celexa, tenex, nizoral.it was very scary for us to stop all his other medications because we were not sure he will sleep with out his b12 anyway that wasnt a problem he stated sleeping more time after stopping other medication even after starting valtrex and other stuff. When i think back that's the only good thing we saw after starting nids that he is getting a good 9 t0 10 hours sleep every day. I dont see any huge gains he had some words before nids that is improving slowly . Earlier he was on gfcf now acco to nids diet he can have some white bread and i can give goat milk, yogurt, cheese etc.. is anyone of you feeding your kids goat milk ? reason iam asking is Dr G still complaints that his allergy levels are up it was 9% now it's 7% he is not happy now ia mnot sure may be this goat milk and white bread causing this ? Acco to nids diet Dr g wants me me limit rice even if it's white processed can anyone tell me what are the safest snacks as per nids diet we can give to kids ? Thanks Anitha From: rngcoggs@... He reassured me that it was safe and has been used quite extensively (he did address BP but I don't remember what he said). It is usually given in very low doses. Before the switch to Intuniv, Noah was getting 1/2 of a 1mg tablet, twice per day. Guest guest
Goat milk appears not to work for us - hyper & some changes in BM. We are staying away from Goat milk & also processed wheat. Re: snacks: Potato snack are an options instead of rice based. Veggie straws (like chips)/french fries is an option. There is a lentil chips (Crunchy curls) that is available in Trader Joes that can make a good snack. Good luck.
