Guest guest
Hi Marcia,  We started working with NNY Autism Center. My son is now on the protocol. We had blood tests done and turns out he had a herpes simplex I infection (who knew?). He's six years old now but regressed between age 2-3.  My son has hyperacusis. He covers his ears frequently and it's very debilitating. He is on Valtrex to address the herpes. I'm wondering if his hyperacusis is due to brain inflammation in the temporal area due to the herpes infection. We started the Valtrex about 1 month ago  I wanted to ask you if you saw improvements in sensory sensitivity with your son over time? Will the sound senstivity eventually disappear? Is it due to inflammation caused by a virus? What helped the most? Did you use anti-virals and for how long?  Hope you don't mind all the questions but this hearing sensitivity is a big problem for my son. Any information/insight is appreciated.  Thanks,   ..        From: and Marcia Hinds <hindssite@...> Subject: Re:Types of immune meds used Date: Saturday, June 5, 2010, 7:56 AM  Kathy, For my son, once his system became more normalized all the stomach issues went away. The excess gas is just a symptom of the immune problem. My son was sometimes constipated or at others had the runs. I know the diet seem confusing but Dr. G is right. I will send you something offline that may help. How old is your son? He probably has been ill for a long time and it takes time to get better. Even once their bodies start working normally, it takes a normal child three years to be fluent in language. All this waiting for the miracle is hard for us moms. We want it right now. But it doesn't work that way. It is slow and steady. Sometimes it is ten steps forward and one step back. But it is extremely important to have some sort of rehabilitation program (we used ABA principles) to teach them what they missed when they couldn't learn because they were sick. My kid is in college, has friends and is recovered but in the beginning I had to teach him all he missed until he started learning like other kids. It is extremely important for parents to realize the medical alone is not enough without rehabilitation. Think of it like a stroke victim you need to bring back once they are better. I know it seems overwhelming but don't look at the big picture. Take it one skill and behavior at a time. We would pick only one thing to work on until it was mastered. Then we went onto the next. Hope this helps, Marcia
