Guest guest
Hi, you can try to make sure he got a lot of activity in the airport so he will be tired on the plane. Give him an empty bottle of water and a bag of cheerios or beads or beans, whatever, and tell him to put one in the bottle at a time and time him. Later see if he can beat his own time. It's very OCDish, but it should take his full attention and you can relax for a little while. Nintendos and portable DVD players with 2-3 favorite DVD's work great. If you don't have them, maybe you know someone that could lend them to you for the trip. Target has a great $1.00 area where there are great stickers, new crayons, coloring books, reading books and small activities you can hide in a bag and surprise him every 1/2 to 1 hour for good behavior. I'm not sure if he's allowed to have anything like Benedryl, but the side affect is great. (but only if your doctor agrees). Watch out for potty accidents if you do a sleepy med.(diaper?) Guest guest
Hi Coles, We always travel with my 4 YO son, the duration of our flight was around 20 to 30 hours per trip. And We traveled almost every three months with12 to 14 hours time difference. When He was young He used to kick the seat in front of him so I always requested the very first row. However, the recent trip he did not kick the seat anymore. I packed his 5 sets of pyjamas on each trip. The secret is to dress them as comfortable as possible. I learned from my son that He asked to change to pyjama each time when we boarded the plane. Let him have his pull up so we do not need to bring them to restroom all the time. I brought a few packs of pull up cos I ever ran out of it, and The Airline did not have his size so He had to wear an infant diaper that the airline provided. What a nightmare. I brought my laptop and downloaded full of movies to entertain him. and I made sure that I equipped with 2 sets of batteries so He can watch his favorite movies as long as he wants. Get him his favorite toys too. And I got a letter from a doctor to bring his food on board, otherwise the airline will not allow it. I would cook and put it in a container or Brought a loaf of bread and his Goat milk. I , myself , did not feel to eat during the flight so I assumed my son would not have great appetite either. So I only gave him Goat milk all the times to ease his digestion. I ever tried to cook and pack 4 to 5 meals before boarding, Believe it or not, He did not want to eat at all.. I threw them away. what a waste. What time is your FLight? Nomally I would not  let him sleep or just took a short nap before the flight. Then He would sleep well during his flight. Get him His pillow so He can sleep on your lap. I always lifted up my armrest so he could lay down as if he slept on his own bed. You can not do that If you are seated on the very first row, Cos the tables are tucked inside your armrest. If you travel only both of you, Request window seats. My son felts at home whenever we got window seats cos We felt that we had our territory without considering other pax. If you reach your destination night time, Do not let him sleep during your flight so He can sleep when He reaches his destination or Vice Versa. However They will adjust it very fast , they will only take 3 to 4 days the most. Never try Melatonin or any kind of sleeping pills. It will make them worse, more aggressive and tantrum throwing. The best is to give him water as much as possible I hope our experience will help you. Please feel free to ask me If you have anymore questions. Guest guest
This is so true - gree with Ju - I can attest to when we lived in Singapore and flew the 20 hours.very similar. you'd be surprised at how compliant the kids are. And we did this pilgrimage at least once or twice a year for 8 years!! before we moved to California. Our son often asks to go on the plane to Singapore!! Of course Singapore Airlines has a brilliant entertainment system. Trips to Australia -0 13-14 ours are easy by comparison. 6 hours - no big deal. Time differences are a challenge - but its the same for everybody - jet lag is jet lag. Work the flights around sleep times as best possible - and plenty of water! _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Ju Njo Sent: Wednesday, May 26, 2010 12:46 PM Subject: Re: travel tips for 6 hour time difference and airplane layovers Hi Coles, We always travel with my 4 YO son, the duration of our flight was around 20 to 30 hours per trip. Guest guest
Hi , You are so right!!! Where in CA did you move to? We'll be flying to the Dominican Republic and then will drive into Haiti to a border town in a couple of weeks. Last year when we flew to the Dominican Republic it was okay, I had his Nintendo DS, PB Sandwich, snacks, book, toys and a doodle pad for him on the plane. He used earplugs the entire time inside the airplane and that helped. Take care, Argie On May 26, 2010, at 5:42 PM, Crosss wrote: > This is so true - gree with Ju - I can attest to when we lived in > Singapore and flew the 20 hours.very similar. you'd be surprised at > how > compliant the kids are.
