Guest guest
Good morning all,  Any advice on how to cut a already small pill in four parts? My son is going to start on Paxil, 1/4 tablet once a day, but the paxil tablet is already like a 1/4 inch. Any advice so it doesn't crumble? --- Thanks  Karla
Guest guest
I use a small-ish stainless steel chef’s knife. The blade is 6-7†long and about 2†high. I sharpen it before each “cutting†session…I put all my son’s pills together once/week, so I sharpen the knife then. I use a plastic cutting board, but we have two and one is a little warped and it doesn’t work. Only the flat board works well. You can also get a pill-cutter from a pharmacy. I had a really good one, but the blade became dull and I could not find a good replacement (and I now like the knife better). You can also dissolve the pill in a carefully measured amount of water, then give your son 1/4 of that. Dr. G and our pharmacist both told me this method is fine, and IMHO, it’s just as accurate, if not more accurate, as cutting. Guest guest
I used the water thing and it was a pain. I now use an exacto knife. Do remember that when you first go on an SSRI Dr G starts way way below the dosage he want to build up to - in other words 1/2 of a twenty mg tab at 5mg is so small that if it is 4 mg or 8 mg one day you have not put your child in danger, if the eventual dosage will be 30 mg or more. Also if you look at the Pill Book hard copy or on-line most of these Rx come in a wide rang of pill styles. We are on Celexia and I ask the pharmacist and he changed to a pill that was pre-scored in half. It is much larger as well and makes it a lot easier. Guest guest
I’ve asked a few and have not found one who will. Not all will compound, either. Guest guest
I had hard time cutting Paxil generic that I got at CVS as it was like a rice. This one did not dislove in the water even. I recently got paxil generic at wallgreens that is in a circle shape. I am able to cut this one as 4 picies easily with pill cutter. I was always worried cutting the pills as I thought the active inhgredient may not distributed evenly in the pill form. The emails from Bill and Ann, today I came to know we can make sure from the Pharmacist whether the pill is pre-scored or not before we slice them. Guest guest
Thank you all for your responses.  Yes, this is the first time my son is going to take SSRI. The strength is 12.5 mg and he's is to take 1/4 a pill once a day, so it would be about 3.25 mg. Does anybody know for how long Dr G stays at the low dose? I wouldn't like to cut in fourth more than necessary.  Thanks  Karla From: Kristy Nardini <knardini@...> Subject: RE: Re:How to cut in paxil pill in four? Guest guest
I have asked my pharmacist to compound it. It costs a lot more but that help. Call Friendly pharmacy to do it, call Dr.G's office knows about their phone number. ________________________________ From: Kristy Nardini <knardini@...> Sent: Tue, July 6, 2010 12:21:16 AM Subject: RE: Re:How to cut in paxil pill in four?  I’ve asked a few and have not found one who will.
