Hi Margaret,

I seem to have an intolerance to something in them. The soy based as well as

Spirutein types cause diarrhea. The whey and egg ones upset my stomach

though not causing as much diarrhea problems. They just don't seem to sit

well, and I avoid ones with sugar or aspartame. At this point I haven't even

worried about taste, just trying to find one I can tolerate. I'm not sure

if I can use vegetarian ones or not. Some vegetables bother me, some don't.

I can tolerate rice products, so maybe one should try a rice protein based

one - I just thought they were higher in carbs so have avoided them.

Thanks,

Vikki

Hi n,

He had an allergy test done (for about 92 foods) which indicated both

IGG and IGE levels for each one. Unfortunately, he's allergic to soy

(high allergy) as well as almost all other beans and lentils. So now

he has hardly any protein in his diet.

I also use the GNC Protein Powder. I use 2 scoops using 1/2 water and 1/2

milk with a couple of ice cubes. I only like the chocolate and sometimes I

add my Citrucel to it. Shake it up good. You can use just water, but I like

it a little creamier so I use 1% milk. You can put it in anything you want

to.

Ideally you should have about 3 of these a day, but I am lucky to get in 1 a

day!

Best of luck,

Whey is best for postworkout as it is taken up and used by the

muscles immediately but its effect isn't very long lasting. Any of

the " caseins " are better at bedtime because they are more time

released and tend to get you through the night. Designer whey touts

something called Glycerlean that is supposed to do this. Most of the

commercial shake blends have a combination of these proteins. Soy is

kind of at the bottom of the list because although it has some

attributes it is not that good for building muscle. Egg albumin

(often an ingredient in commercial mixes) or egg protein is very

high quality. Sorry to give complicated answers to simple questions.

My favorite is Designer Whey, French vanilla. It is great in recipes because it

has such

a mild flavor and doesn't interfere with the other flavors. I put it in all

sorts of things,

including oatmeal. At GNC a 12.7 oz can was $17.99, but I found it at my local

supermarket for $11.99. I've also bought huge containers of it online from

various

places at a good discount. I liked the flavor better than the EAS products.

Just promise you won't judge all protein powders by the one that's on sale at

the grocery store. Some of those are wallpaper paste. :-)

I like EAS MyoPro Whey in chocolate or strawberry but it only comes in giant 5

pound tubs. I would bet that some of the EAS AdvantEdge stuff at Walmart might

taste ok and come in smaller containers. I know you can get Designer Protein in

pretty small (coffee can sized) servings. You might have to go to GNC for it

though and they're pretty freakishly expensive.

I usually order online from Vitaglo http://vitaglo.com or Netrition

http://netrition.com

Even if you inadvertently pick an icky tasting one, protein powder can be

doctored miraculously once you start adding things like frozen fruit, Splenda,

milk, yogurt, or peanut butter.

Protein Powder

I have not yet bought any protein powder. I would like to buy just a little

and see if I like using it. Where is a place to buy a small amount pretty

cheaply--anybody know? GNC? Would it be in the diet aisle at Walmart?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hey Ann, I'm also a Detroiter and I've been to Edge Nutrition.

They are nice guys.

BTW, have you tried the BMF Hardcore protein powder yet? They have

smaller canisters that you can try. The vanilla & chocolate are

quite good. The strawberry/banana is not so hot.

I will definitely give those a try! I use MyoPro Whey vanilla

because it's kind of like an empty canvas to which I add lots of

stuff. But, the small canisters appeal to me. Thanks for the heads

up!

By the way. I didn't mention it before, but for those who may want

to look for the store, I believe Edge Nutrition is in Madison

Heights. Although there may be two of them with one of them being in

Clawson. The one I'm thinking of is on 14 Mile Road.

Thanks again for the heads up Ann! Have a great evening and get

ready for another snowy day ahead!

Designer Whey is my favorite. I have tried everything!

Prolab Pure Whey was my longtime favorite - chocolate, vanilla, and

strawberry are all good; they had an orange vanilla flavor that was

terrible (not very sweet).

Myopro (EAS, formerly Simply Whey) chocolate is pretty good - very

strong cocoa flavor. Vanilla and Strawberry are not very sweet.

Precision Protein (EAS) chocolate is my new favorite. It's much more

expensive than the others, though.

The best tasting protein powder I've ever had is Muscle Provider by

Beverley International. It can be purchased at vitaglo though. Both

the chocolate and vanilla flavors are great.

Also, there is this product sold by only one of our local GNC called

Protein Maxximum which is also very good. I try to steer clear of GNC

if I can but will go in for this particular powder. I haven't looked

for it anywhere else.

and mixes well.

Stasia I have to agree with you on the Beverly International protein

powder. It is delicious...I kid you not! Have you ever had the " cookies

ive made shakes for my kids with protein powder... i specifically asked the

guy at the health food store and he said that it would be great for the

kids.... much better than the carnation instant breakfast that i was using

or the bottled milkshakes, both have so much sugar in them.

i really like the shakes that i make with it, but the kids dont like them

that much for some reason. i use a top notch brand of whey protein in a

vanilla ice cream flavour and add fruit to it along with some extracts

(orange or vanilla) or even chocolate syrup, along with water, but still

they didnt like it. it may have been more of an issue with texture (too

thick?) and perhaps they can detect a taste of the powder. some of the

powders taste terrible but this one is the best that ive had. i think that

i will try to use less powder in theirs than i do in mine and perhaps water

it down more. one of our sons (age 4) loves choc soy milk blended with

peanut butter and ice the best so he gets that most mornings for breakfast.

i can look up the exact recipe i use for my own protein shakes if you like.

Wow...I don't know what the heck Microlactin is, but Glutamine is an

amino acid, and aminogen is an enzyme, that I believe helps digestion.

The protein powder I use has the glutamine & aminogen. When I

completed my first challenge a few years ago, I tried tons of

different whey protein powders. I based my decisions soley on taste,

fat, and carb content. I really fell in love with Optimum Nutrition's

Instanized Whey Isolates in Vanilla Ice Cream & the Double Rich

Chocolate. I also just ordered Syntrax Nectar which I have not tried

yet, but heard was very good.

Hope that helps a little!

I've used Designer Whey, Myoplex, and Spriu-tein. I prefer the

Designer Whey for at home when I have the blender and fruit. The Spiru-

tein comes in a ton of awesome flavors and mixes really well! I don't

really like the Myo-plex. Too sweet! The only reason I continue to

use it is because my boyfriend bought a freaking huge box of like 50

packets.

I honestly don't think all the options are nessessary. KISS, keep it

simple sister. I think too much information is a bad thing sometimes,

it makes it more complicated than it should be.

A good protein powder has the big advantage of being very easily assimilated, and our kids need those amino acids. Protein is said to help heal the gut, some of the amino acids are important precursors to glutathione, and of course well-absorbed protein is important for growth, etc. We use the Vianesse powder that MandiMart now stocks. That one - and some others I'm sure - is made from whey, which is a big dietary source of glutathione itself. The flavours are good and the texture doesn't seem particularliy grainy. The chocolate and vanilla, particularily, taste close enough to a milkshake! I also doctor them up with liquid stevia and/or bananas or cinnamon or berries. The plain one definitely needs at least a (non-sugar) sweetener. I really recommend Vianesse.

Anita's hemp hearts sound great, but I wonder if they really get chewed up enough, or just slide down the throat intact? I'm thinking that, like with flax seeds, you'd want to be sure they didn't exit the other end in pretty much the same shape they went in. Anita, what do you think?

Abigail,

That is a good point (sorry I just saw it). My son, who has

malabsorption issues, *seems to be digesting them, but I couldn't

guarantee that, especially in light of his all low amino profile. The

shell is taken of them so they're a bit more like ground up flax than a

whole flax seed. One of the things I really like about the hemp seeds

is that they provide a lot of things at once (good fats, protein,

fibre, and a lot of other stuff my son is deficient in).

That's much like you pointed out for the whey powder that can boost

glutathione, help heal the gut, etc. And, as you said, some of it

tastes so good it is marvellous for getting into our picky kids.

I was using whey powder but became concerned about the free glutamic

acid issue. Sally Fallon brings this up about the protein powders.

And then a friend of mine's child started getting bad hives from

protein powder. At that time, I decided to go with the hemp hearts

instead even though my son didn't seem to be having problems with the

powder.

I think the important thing is to have options for our kids and so I

throw out my hippy protein idea :-)

Hi Abigail,

Sorry for the very late response. I didn't see your question and then

seems to have eaten yesterday's reply.

Your question is a very good one. My son has malabsorption issues but

does *seem to be digesting the hemp hearts to some degree (I can't seem

to find them in his poop, and I looked today, just for your :-)).

However, I may be completely wrong on this given my son's all low amino

profile. Hemp hearts don't have the shell they same way flax seeds do,

so maybe this makes them a bit more digestible.

I have used protein powder and it does do many great things for many

people. I personally just became concerned, perhaps unnecessarily,

about free glutamic acid. And then a friend of mine's son started

having hives in reaction to protein powder. I also like the fact that,

like protein powder, hemp hearts offer a number of benefits.

I offer my hippy protein alternative only because it's nice to have

options :-)

You can order Unjury from their web site. www.unjury.com

Isopure or as we call it IsoPUKE can be purchased at most any Health Food place. I am not too sure I would buy more than one very small bottle of it --because it does taste like pond scum, and I am sure you won't like it at all.
