Hi , I also have a friend that recently put her son on this drug. He had previously been on Tenex and she saw a difference in a few days. The child came home from school and was able to tell her that he had a wonderful day and was actually able to do his art. He hasn't experienced any side effects yet. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 10 DS/OCD ? Guest guest
Apparently the drug has to build up in the system for at least 48 hours. After 8 days they will up the dose. They started really really low because of past sensitivies to other drugs. Diane > > From: Ltb3105@... > Date: 2003/06/03 Tue AM 08:08:50 EDT > > Subject: Re: Strattera > > Thanks, I'd appreciate it. Guest guest
: I hope this helps. I have a daughter with adhd, in addition to my apraxic son. I have signed onto the children-with- adhd@.com....another group for the discussion of adhd alone. I recently got an update from that group that listed all of the mom's opinions about strattera, such as dosing, trials, side effects, literally thousands of " posts " about Strattera. I know that I am calling my neuro-ped about getting strattera for my daughter. Here is that link, again, I hope it helps. If not, you may want to try looking into the group I mentioned above. http://www.adhd.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002053.html Finally, I know many parents who also use Pro-EFA's for adhd kids in addition to their apraxic kids. In fact, Dr. Stordy talks about EFA's for ADHD/Dyslexia/Dyspraxia. Unfortunately, I have not been very consistent with my daughter and using EFA's, probably because I was SO concerned about my son. Many parents do not use medication when treating their adhd kids, again, they use a combination of EFA's. I am not saying that you should not use meds....I am! Just another route to explore. Good luck! Kim in Illinois > Hi all, > > Wondering if any of you out there are trying strattera for your > adhd/apraxia kids? Guest guest
To the best of my knowledge, it is used for ADD/ADHD only. It is the first non-stimulant drug for this, as opposed to all of the ritalin. Kim > Strattera... Is it only for the tx of ADHD or does also help with > Apraxia/Dyspraxia? Guest guest
--- I tried Strattera for my son...put it off for a long time because he had not been on any meds since he had a reaction to Dexadrine that put him in the emergency room in 1998, finally tried it for about 3-4 weeks. I also did not like the effect it had on my son...irritability, attention span, attention getting, anger, etc. My son doesn't atlk, so I guess it would be hard for him to be rude, mean, etc. but I did see anger. I guess we are again reminded that Autism is not caused by a shortage of some drug. Initially, I had high hopes for this medication. It appeared to help my son's impulsiveness and his attention. However, around the 6th week I began to see a decline in those areas. I began to see nastiness, irritability, rudeness, meanness, etc... My son is generally quite cooperative for me, but not for others. However, this is beyond compare! He even started being nasty to me. Needless to say, I am stopping the Stattera, and never considering meds again... You would think I would have learned my lesson by now. This stuff made the Clonidine trip look like a piece of cake. > > a
Guest guest
Well, I think it can be a shortage of something, for some, but not a once size fits all protocol. My son use to have horrible anxiety and OCD, and we tried Celexa. He has remained on a very low dose since January 2001. It definitely helped improve both of those problems. However, the ADHD like symptoms have not improved on anything. The Strattera definitely caused more aggressive behavior and an overall bad, unpredictable temper. I also saw a lot of up and down mood swings, excessive sleepiness, insomnia, and a poor appetite. a --- " readjoshua19 " <readjoshua19@...> wrote: --- I tried Strattera for my son...put it off for a long time because he had not been on any meds since he had a reaction to Dexadrine that put him in the emergency room in 1998, finally tried it for about 3-4 weeks. Guest guest
My son has Asperger's Ritalan and Concerta has helped with his attention span. When Ritalan wears off he becomes himself agan. Concerta lasts a little longer than Ritalan for him.
Guest guest
Thank you so much for your reply..... Our Pediatrician told us that the Strattera would make him sleepy - and so to give it to him at night. Well, it had the opposite effect for us.... Main issues are the focus and distractibility -- hyperness as well though.... Guess I should have tried giving it to him in the morning....... Maybe I'll try it again -- during a period of time he is not in school though! That way we can get the 'kinks' worked out.... Adderall XR works great for our son - but he is on the skinny side and the effects for us are stomach problems and decreased appetite..... I was hoping the strattera would help with that -- but in our case, it didn't --- or I didnt' give it enough time to........ With the strattera do you have to do continual dosing? Like with the adderall -- we skip summers, breaks, and weekends. He really only needs it for school. -----Original

Guest guest
It would probably take at least 2 weeks on being on the therapeutic level dose to see if it's going to work. The best results we have seen in our office (probably 30-40 kids so far) have been in the kids who could not take stimulants either because they did not work or they had very negative side effects. We tried my son on Strattera during the summer so I could really monitor any positive or negative effects and so we would have him ready for school. Strattera actually has more risk of stomach upset than the stimulants and must be taken with food, at least in the first several weeks and we saw a decrease in appetite with it at therapeutic levels-the drug rep says that usually goes away after the first couple of months. They do not recommend skipping short breaks like weekends, but you can skip the summer as long as you remember is may take a few weeks to get back to where you were. It is more like Prozac or other drugs were blood levels need to be maintained better vs stimulants that are in and out of your system in a few hours.
