Guest guest
Sorry it took so long to reply. Ritalin type drugs make Matt very hyper. Strattera is given 25mg in the morning. No sleepiness but I did have to decrease his Clonidine to .25mg in the morning and afternoon. Matt does seem to be calmer kind of in general but certainly more focused and attentive. It's funny how our kids can react so differently so the same thing. I have never gone over 25mg at a time but I did take out the afternoon dose when we had constipation problems. United Healthcare covers this new drug. I can also get a 3 month supply if the doctor writes it that way. I'm not sure why your doctor told you to give this to him at night? Dr. Jerry said this has a 4 hour effective time. Hmmm..All I can safely tell you is I have noticed a difference. Even on a low dose. I hope this helps. Trina RE: Strattera Thank you so much for your reply..... Our Pediatrician told us that the Strattera would make him sleepy - and so to give it to him at night. Well, it had the opposite effect for us.... Main issues are the focus and distractibility -- hyperness as well though.... Guess I should have tried giving it to him in the morning....... Maybe I'll try it again -- during a period of time he is not in school though! That way we can get the 'kinks' worked out.... Adderall XR works great for our son - but he is on the skinny side and the effects for us are stomach problems and decreased appetite..... I was hoping the strattera would help with that -- but in our case, it didn't --- or I didnt' give it enough time to........ With the strattera do you have to do continual dosing? Like with the adderall -- we skip summers, breaks, and weekends. He really only needs it for school. -----Original

Guest guest
Hi, Strattera made my DS worse with metdowns and his frustration levels we real low. He would blow-up for nothing. Also seemed to make him loud and more defiant. Talked back more. it took almost 3 weeks for the Stratter to leave his system. Guest guest
a, I hope you find answers. Our doc once told us that taking " luvox " would not cause any weight gain because my ds positively ballooned in just 3 months that coincided with the chage in meds. The doc did admit he had put on a lot of weight - 30 pounds - but it wasn't because of the med. I don't know still whether he was right or if my ds just suddenly turned on to food. But the weight has stayed even after he went off the med. Roxanna > Carol, > > My dr swore it wasn't possible!!! Guest guest
We have tried Strattera for our 5y.o. non-verbal and very active son. We have alot of ADD and ADHD on both sides of the family so it seemed conceivable that our son could be ADHD. I think it is just a guess when you have autism thrown into the puzzle, but Strattera has been wonderful. He is much calmer and has been able to focus better. This is one drug that we will cont. However, it does seem to make him alittle sleepy and not as perky. But I think managing his behavior and allowing him to learn outweighs the side effects. We do all the bio-med stuff and have tried other perscription meds. ie-Luvox, and Respiradal and Strattera is one that appears to work the best for our little guy. Hope this helps. Guest guest
For those that use Strattera- is it in capsule form- how do you get your little ones to swollen that - or have I been mislead- It has been recommended but I don't see how I can get Sam to take a capsule. We generally either need to crush pills or place in juice Please respond! Jeneane Houston

Guest guest
I open the capsule and put it in juice. I think it tastes bitter, so it is hard to hide. Guest guest
Our daughter (6 years and autistic) would not swallow the capsule either. Her doctor suggested we pull the capsule apart and sprinkle the powder in with apples sause or some other food item. It was so bitter that she would not take it. The doctor even found a pharmacist to try to make it into liquid form but the bitterness could not be masked with any of the flavorings they had there. We made them into suppositories and that worked but we felt that was an extreme so we quit fighting her with that. We snuck it into her chocolate milk and mixed lots of chocolate but it only worked for a few weeks until she quit drinking chocolate milk all together! Not a good thing since that was the only source of calcium she was getting. We did like the results from the medicine but we have given up. She is still on another medication but it is one that can be made into liquid form without the bitter taste. CL Re: Re: Strattera Have him practice swallowing M & M's then move on up to the capsules. Guest guest
We used to get the Adderall made into liquid form. The side effects were not great so her doctor switched her to something else. I am not sure how our psychiatrist knew about the pharmacist but he directed us to the a certain one that was able to make pretty much any medication into liquid form with a flavoring added to it. We always added a grape flavor to the Adderall and our daughter took it without too many problems. But, to answer your question, we no longer take an ADHD med, we take Paxil in liquid form. Guest guest
By the way, for those of you living near the Lubbock area, CapRock drug has a pharmacist that can make the meds into liquid form and if you really want even better service, Baggett's Pharmacy in Levelland,TX does the same. Baggett's is the one place I have found that can also make Phenagram (spelling???) the med for nausia, into a gel form. It's wonderful with an autistic child to be able to simply rub the gel behind her ear when she is sick without having to force her to swallow yet another drug. Every time my daughter used to get sick she would run a fever and she always went through boughts of vomiting so the gel really worked for us. Guest guest
We were told by our neurologist to not open the Straterra capsules. He says that by not taking the pill whole, the powder can cause irritation in the throat. We live in Austin and go to People's Pharmacy to have them turn it into a liquid form. Guest guest
Hi All, I have been taking Strattera for about two weeks. I think I feel more up tight. It is supposed to, I think, increase focus and cognition. I was wondering if anyone was taking it and how it has effected them. Thanks Mike
