Hi Jill!

Thank you for responding! I took Freddie to see his

pediatrician but unfortunately or fortunately (not

sure yet) he will not prescribe meds because he feels

he is not qualified to make a diagnoses and he does

not do the evals required. He referred us out to

psychiatry and psychology. I talked to the psychiatry

folks but they are booked solid and Freddie can not

wait three months for an evaluation. As I understand

it, an evaluation will require a 90 minute one to one

eval with a psychiatrist, questioners for teachers and

parents and then a parent one to one interview. Sounds

thorough but timely. But then again I am not sure ADHD

is what we are dealing with.

Did you see language improvement with Kit? One of my

theories is that if we can open the pathways to

listening and learning we also open the pathways that

allow for modeling typical language patterns? Mind you

this is not why I want Freddie evaluated. He has a lot

of impulse behaviors as well as poor attention span.

A rain drop could fall on a leaf a mile away and

Freddie will hear it and be distracted……;-)

I have not noticed a huge difference in Kit's language development. She is slowly making progress in that area, but nothing significant just since starting the meds. I agree with what you are saying, though.

nna,

Faith doesn't so much get distracted by every little thing as she is the master distractor. When she is doing anything that is hard for her, such as reading with me, she will use all kinds of distraction techniques to get out of doing the actual reading. There was a sticker on a book and she went into all kinds of discussion about that sticker instead of reading! However when she is concentrating on something she prefers: computer, TV, Leapster, swimming, there is NO distracting her with anything.

I don't know if that is the kind of distractibility you are seeing, but you might consider it.

hi all,

paulette, my daughter Bea (8 DS) is so like Faith in this respect(master distractor!!) specially when she has to do her Math Kumon worksheet or any homework which she does not want to do or i think she finds hard to do. Bea loves reading though and ditto on the computer,TV and swimming! a therapist once told me to watch out for this behaviour distraction/manipulation/escape to do task since Bea will do this every chance she can get away with it, we have to be consistent in requiring her to finish tasks (although i admit my patience wears thin sometimes!:-0

I can so relate to the not wanting to wait. I am going through similiar issues with my eldest son,Evan, who is 7. I called the Neuropsychologist at the end of July and we have a day long...6hour appointment divided up with an hour lunch break...so 7 hours on Nov 13th. The homework frustrations are getting to be too much and I hate our household in the evenings. Evan obssesses with other things and does everything to get out of homework or mental work. He is so distracted and bothered with sounds...he hears everything and we cannot make it quite enough for him. However, if he is alone in the house with just my husband and I is writing, spelling, and concentration is so so perfect. He has regressed a lot during the past few months. I expected this stuff with Nate not Evan. I quess Big brother will pave the way for Nate. I know Evan could possibly benefit fro a Listening program and I feel bad we have to wait so

long to help him. I hate seeing the frustration and excitment of reading and math go downhill for him. I have found that TouchMath has really helped with his math and processing of Math...he was so so slow and the TouchMath has helped him stay more focused. Note...Evan does not have Down syndrome, it is my 3 year old Nate that does! Big HUGS to you all! I hate seeing the frustration but I thinking learning all about why my child does what he does help me not to get mad.Sherry Mom to Evan(7), Olivia(6), and (9/7/2004)*

May I suggest you address your question to Dr. Jaquelyn McCandless. She has a

great deal of experience using LDN to treat autistic children and I'm sure she

Hi Shanbell,

If you interested, I can send you some digestive enzyme samples. The

ones I would recommend are Lacto because it has very low potency and

it's a great starter product to see how you little one will do with

enzymes. I can also send Digest. It's a more potent digestive enzyme

that you can work your way up to. I also think Virastop would be a

great product (for detoxification). My recommendations are taken from

the book " Enzymes:What The Experts Know " . If you have any questions

feel free to ask me or call the technical advisors at Enzymedica at

888-918-1118. I would be more than happy to send out samples or

answer any questions.

Both dh and I are ADD/dyslexic, and I agree with you about the

relationship with autism. Both dh and I have had improvement in our

symptoms from treating yeast, and we both show signs of high histamine

(we will be tested soon for histadelia). The list of high phenol

foods is similar to the list of high histamine foods, and we are

finding that what we thought was a phenol sensitivity in our not

diagnosed, but ADHDish son is actually a sensitivity to high histamine

foods. No-fenol enzyme didn't do much for my son, which might be a

clue that it is a histamine reaction instead. Both dh and I also do

better with no dairy or gluten.

Hi,

I too am dyslexic and I think my husband has some OCD and was very

hyper as a child. (Poss phenol issue as orange squash sent him

hyper). When my son is trying to pull a word from memory, it is

just like when you are trying to remember the name, but can't. So I

agree part of my son's ASD is like severe Dyslexia. My husband's

family also has dyslexia.

I would love to do a survey of all the parents on groups like this

and see what combinations of parent leads to what combination of

kids. To find out if there is any correlation between parents and

child's issues.

One thing that puzzled me for a while, is my husbands brother is on

the spectrum (undiagnosed), issues with social skills his wife much

more so, yet their son is without diagnosis, but I would say

anecdotally he is slightly Aspergers. However, my husband and I are

socially all there - yet we have the sever ASD kid.

I tried the enzymes for a while, but did not feel any different.

However, for medical reasons I had to go on a low iodine diet for 8

months - my dyslexia and tracking issues seemed to fade away. I was

not allowed any dairy, soy, seafood, and a few other things. I

highly suspect the dairy and the soy. My son who was not a great

responded to many things was much more with it, after we removed

these from his diet.

I have three kids. 7yr boy ADHD,6yr boyASD and typical 6yr daughter

We tried NATE which worked for awhile but did not hold. We now have

all three kids on a gfcf diet because they responded to the diet. We

use AFP enzymes when we travel and eat out. IGG testing was very

helpful in eliminating foods they showed sensitivity. For hyper

activity we use Gaba, mb-12(only in the morning), p5p,Zinc(once a

week but only in the morning and epson salt baths three times a week.

(right before bedtime). For overall wellbeing we give probiotics and

codfish oil. We also keep tract of the sensory diet and make sure

they have plenty of exercise. We eliminated excitotoxins and took out

caffine. Zinc and mb-12 did increase hyperactivity in the begining so

we cut back and slowly added more till we got to the recommended

doseage. We recently added in chiropractic treatments.I was not

convinced the chiropractic treatments were working until my oldest

son's teacher said he seems much calmer and attentive in class. Emmy

Please forgive me to jump into this topic. For hyperactivity, do you use mb-12

spray or injection? We used injection one year ago (started with 1/4 of normal

dosage), but made my boy much more hyper and woke up 4-5 hours every night. Does

it mean he does not need mb-12?

My son's ASD symptom is getting better, but his ADD/ADHD is still so bad. I

haven't found an effective way to treat ADHD symptom yet. We haven't done ALA

yet. Will it help? Any advices are appreciated!

Dana,

Your advices are always highly appreciated! He never tried mito-cocktail. Will

give it a trial.

I will prepare folic acid and carnitine and try B-12 again. Thank you very much

for your help and time!

Hi Grace,

I am an OT using Svetlana's work with children that have all of the diagnoses you have mentioned and found this work very helpful in many ways- I have seen changes with learning, ability to focus, decreased anger and aggression, better sleep and bowel patterns, better regulation and increased organization. I no longer use brushing techniches for hypersensitivity and use her tactile integration techniques instead. I have found it very helpful to do the exercises with kids lying under a weighted blanket, and use balance boards with almost all kids, which Svetlana also speaks alot about in her course. Continue to listen with your eyes and your heart- they will give you better measurements for improved function than diagnoses, test scores and statistics. Best of luck to you,

Hi again,I have two boys, , 7 diagnosed with ASD and Cameron, 5. Cameron has never been diagnosed with anything but he has some behavioural issues and his school teacher calls me once a week. We've gone around different psychologists here in Singapore with conflicting opinions about him, from autsim, dyspraxia to dyslexia and sensory integration disorder. Services are still developing here. I have decided not to listen to any of them and just to listen with my eyes and my heart. He has low muscle tone and sees an OT once a week. I also engaged a speech therapist to help him with his articulation. However, as I sat in Dr Masgutova's seminar two weeks ago, she mentioned something interesting, that many children with ADD are thought to have dyslexia. I had settled on the "fact" that he might have dyslexia. As I thought it through, I now suspect he has ADD or ADHD. It does not

matter to me whether he has an official label, I would just like to help him accordingly. Now that I read up more about ADHD, I think that I might have it too! Anyway, I am digressing, I would like to hear from parents of children with ADHD and how reflex integration has helped their children. There are days when I just feel like I don't understand my younger son at all and it is not a good place to be in, for the two of us.Thank you.Grace

Thanks for sharing . It is encouraging to hear of such

progress made with the children you see. I intend to attend the camp

in Dec to learn as much as I can as I have seen great improvements in

his oral issues.

My son was very young when diagnosed with ADHD, he has no impulse control at all. We did start him on medicine which was not taken likely but we could talk with him and he stopped getting hurt as much. We even had to put a special report from his ped. doc for his bruises. It was awful. At age 6 he was diagnosed with AS our first ped. doc told us not to just think it will only be ADHD. His son had Autism but at the time Bryce was talking and using large words, and just HYPER. I did not want to believe that he had AS my husband thought so after reading up on it.

On to the meds. My son has gone through a lot of meds- we started with Adderall 5 mg and we tweaked it for our best dose. He started taking 2.5 for a while at the time 5 mg put him to far under we wanted our son to have some energy. We liked Adderall the best. He tried Focalin (7 years of age) but we ended up having to go with a very high dose-50 mg. Medadate CD(8 yr old) we got up to 30 mg . We tried Ritalin in there some where but he complained of chest pains so off that went, no second thoughts on that. We are now on Adderall 20 mg twice a day. I homeschool him which is hard but he is able to walk if he needs to walk sit on the floor and take breaks. I have to say I have never really seen him focus very well, the attention part has never been good. He doesnt' run into things doesn't hit us or bang his head on the walls. Medicine is a hard thing I wanted to get him off of it but he turns into someone we do not know nor do we want to know. Just doesn't care off of meds, breaks my heart. I have told him that he has to learn his self control. He used to tell us when the meds ran out of his body and would ask for another pill, LOL. I have done long acting but right now we like to tweak where we see the need. Sometimes he doesnt' get the 2nd dose like on the weekend and he eats more. I do not want to up the dose at this time I think we need to but my husband says wait a while. One thing that I have noticed is that he seems to metablize the medicine quickly, in other words we have to increase the dosage more often. He is now up to 60 lbs at almost age 10 he has grown since we have put him on Ensure which he hates drinking but he does see for himself that has grown. i do believe that you have to watch the height and weight of your child. Also it can cause sleep issues. Bryce takes clondine 0.1 mg at night has for years and he sleeps for about 5 hours and then is restless after that. I know as I have slept with him,UGH. Not every night only when we travel somewhere. He is very restless. That doesn't help him gain weight either.

Well I will stop I hope this helps you on your journey

Hi all, i would like to hear from anyone in this list whos kids have the adhd diagnosis as well as As. My soon to be 6 year old ds Adam was diagnosed right before xmas. We always suspected he had adhd but never knew for sure. He was diagnosed with Aspergers and spd when he was 4 and a half. We were advised that Adam be started on medication as soon as possible as he has been having problems at school. We decided to medicate him but i must stress it was not an easy decision to make but thats what my hubby and I decided to do as we want the very best for him. He stared on 5mg of Ritilan and now he is taking the max dose for his weight of 20mg, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We have seen some progress and we are lookiing forward to geting him back to school to see if his teachers can see much of a change in him. He is now due to start on concerta XL now which is the slow relese tablet form of ritilin but it can not be taken out of the capsule or mixed into drinks or food as it needs to be swallowed whole and not chewed. I would just like to hear from anyone with any advise on geting him to take the pill and if anyone out there found the Concerta better than ritilin or vise versa! Hi, funnily enough my son is also called Adam. He is 7 and has had a

vague diagnosis of ADHD as well but we are now getting a proper

diagnosis and it looks like he will be prescibed some medication but

a bit behind you at the moment!

Hi Estelle,

I have a 10 year old HFA son who is also ADD and Anxiety disorder.

He has been on medication for a few years now. It has been a process

of adjusting the meds as he grows but when it is working well it

makes a huge difference. ly, I cannot immagine the way my or

his life would be if he didn't have the meds.

Anyway, he is on Concerta and has been for several years. It works

very well and does not have the crashes that the fast release can

have as it wears off. We have had to increase the dose several times

as he grew. We are currently at 36 mgs. He is also on Zoloft for

the anxiety. He takes 125 mgs. We also have had to add a 5 mg

Ridlin booster in the morning and afternoon. This was because the

Concerta cannot be broken to give partial doses and the 36 alone was

not doing the trick but the next dose up was 54 mgs and that was to

much. So we are doing it this way for now. Long story short he

takes 4 pills every morning, two fairly large and two small. He is

such an old pro at this that he just swallows them and uses a little

water as a chaser.

I think that you may find that the Concerta is not so bad for him to

take. The low dose pill is pretty small and the coating on it that

makes it time release also keeps it from getting a bad taste in the

mouth when it is taken. Unlike the Zoloft which in the generic form

tastes horrible. We have opted to go with two separate prescriptions

for my son so he doesn't have to take a broken pill. Thankfully it

is generic so it doesn't cost that much more to get it in two

prescriptions instead of one.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi ,

Are you a parent or a professional and what age is the child as well as what are

the symptoms you are looking to address or worried about? I can provide

numerous tips as a parent both for home and school as my oldest had been

diagnosed by numerous professionals as ADHD and he was classified in 3rd grade

as " gifted learning disabled "

There are many strategies for the classroom for example if your child is school

age that can be written into his IEP. Just one for example= make sure your

child is seated as close to the teacher as possible in the front of the room,

and have her walk by his desk while he's working and just touch his desk- little

things like that help ADHD kids stay focused and of course no cost involved with

that. And just one other thing I love to share is about the FM systems...I know

budgets are tight for schools but please check out the research on how well

'all' students improve in grades when a system like this is installed. Think

about when you go to a conference that is miked and the mike goes off and you

can still hear the person speaking but your mind starts to wander. That's

exactly what happens to the children in the classrooms. I mean in the long run

it would save schools money and the grades would go up across the board based on

research- it's awesome for hearing impaired, speech impaired, learning disabled

students as well as " normal " students and teachers love it as it saves their

voice.

As far as nutritional alternative my son Dakota has been on fish oils for years

which has not only kept him off all meds (thank goodness) but he has not been

classified in years. Give me an idea what you are looking for tips for (how to

keep them safe when you take them out to the store when they are little or how

to help them stay on task in school which for example are two different ages)

We just started my ADHD son on the nutriiveda twice a day due to feedback from

other's with ADHD teen children- and am excited about this too but too soon to

know grades wise yet as he's always a good student -so to see if he goes to

straight As as he's extremely bright (tested 99th percentile by the public

school) but will forget homework, books, papers, pencils, notebooks, his

computer, the cord for the computer, lunch, jacket...need I go on? If this new

addition helps bring more focus even without going to straight As as what I

heard in the 3 other reports (one from being a poor student the others were B C

students)that would be incredible! I have more on this most recent addition here

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/topic.php?uid=115029735601 & topic=13047 and yes

Dakota is still on fish oils.

I would like to discuss ADHD a bit more in this group as we do have children

with duel diagnosis -but unfortunately there's never been much discussion here

on ADHD. There are other and other groups that talk about ADHD -focus on

it actually. Would love to help but again please provide a bit more of what you

are looking for.

- I would love to hear your tips or suggestions on resources for a little

one with suspected ADHD. My 3.5 year old has been diagnosed with severe

apraxia, low tone and demonstrates sensory seeking behaviors. He has always

been very high energy and our developmental ped said we would watch him for

possible ADHD, but it was too early to diagnosis. His speech has been

progressing slowly. He has been on fish oils for a while, but never noticed any

very apparent surges. We did start Nutriveda a few weeks back and are noticing

some subtle improvement with speech, fine motor and creative play, however his

hyperactivity, some sleep disruption and tantrums are difficult to deal with at

times. His SLP has seen speech improvement but also noticed a lack of focus.

I'd like to stay on the Nutriveda and see it through, but really need some

strategies for dealing more aggressively with his ADHD type behavior. I wonder

if his speech wouldn't be improving more rapidly if we could improve his focus.

Actually, you may wanna look up bipolar - possibility. They have the same symptoms and her 'volcano' like personality might be an early sign. Check both sides of the family history history going back to your parents and your wife's parents. IF there is any history within the family, she may be a candidate. Treating someone with bipolar with ADHD meds exacerbates the problems rather than helping..... good luck. I'm here anytime

Hi guys. I have been a part of this group for a while now . Have 15yr ds with aspergers.I have been reading that many of you have sons or daughters with ADHD.I have an appt. not for a long time, for my NT daughter who is 9. Just wondering if you can tell me what you think, coz I don't know if it's coz she's a girl with red tinged hair! From an early age she bit everyone, she got in trouble so much she bites herself when frustrated. She screams at us about everything. We call her a volcano coz she bubbles and bubbles then she blows then she is calm for a few hours. It is worse when she is tired. She is agressive, hurtful and nasty. She is the bully in our household. She lies about everything, and I mean everything, she steals things. She is struggling at school, she doesn't seem to retain things, she drifts off, she is hard to get focussed and write. She has never slept peacefully. She use to bed hop but now it's only maybe one night a week

she gets out of bed. She doesn't want to go to bed, then she won't get up. She screams and talks in her sleep all through the night. At school and home she interupts and speaks over people. There's probably other things so maybe you could ask me a question relating to ADHD or something else and that will help me.Thanks guys you are awesome.KelI will keep climbing the mountain.Sent from Kel's iPhone
