Guest guest
: usually retina coloboma will mean a loss of the upper visual field. Usually with just the coloboma in the retina, there is not aquity or fine detail loss. It will be important to prop baby up as they cannot see as much laying flat. They will not see medical intervention coming, to anticipate. So everyone needs to make the little one aware they are there, touch and explore what " tools " they are going to use before things are " done " to them. (even if it is a diaper change) There can also be size differences in the coloboma, some larger or some smaller. It is possible that he is only using one eye at a time, ...his right...for distance, and not be that he doesn't have as much vision in left. Also, cranial nerves do effect movement of the eyes, so often children with CHARGE have problems with eye movement--the ability of eyes to work together to scan, track, etc. Often they end up using only one eye at a time. Don't be afraid of the term " deafblind " as it may help in the future for educational purposes, therapy and available Interventions. It should mean a combination of visual and auditory problems (which is why in Canada we join the word together). The awareness of the combination of problems will make sure that all sensory ability are considered during aspects of therapy, education and development. ANN GLOYN, Deafblind and Spec.Ed.
