Guest guest
Wow -- yes, that kind of stuff does happen with AntiD's. When I look back at my behavior while I was on AntiD's (the feeling of exhaustion, the insomnia combined with it, and the bouts of agitation and rage at times), I think it was because I was stopping one and starting another; stopping one and starting another (this went on for years). And when I stopped Lexapro suddenly ? ? ? It was awful -- no fun at all not to mention it was just plain dangerous physiologically to do so. I knew I shouldn't stop something suddenly, but I just didn't care, I guess. I've always been an " animated-type " person (was diagnosed hyperactive as a kid), and I think as an adult (40ish when they started me on AntiD's), that it was the AntiD's that served to enhance the times I felt (and got) so angry. I look at the way I feel and behave now compared to the way I felt and behaved while taking then, and I was one who felt and acted like a lunatic (delusional) while on them. I'm glad you all were OK through that and that nothing tragic happened due to his delusional state. I've got a friend who -- yesterday -- told me he had stopped his Depakote suddenly. He's been on Prozac, Wellbutrin, Depakote, three blood pressure medicines for five years (and more recently they've prescribed Percocet and Ativan). He is tired of " all these da** pills " , as he puts it, and he talked to the VA docs a few months ago about getting off some of the " head meds " . (he's talked to them in years passed about getting off some of them because he thinks they aren't helping). They told him he was on such a low of Depakote that he didn't need liver function tests done, and that his liver would be just fine (he doesn't have Hep C) . I saw him for the first time yesterday (hadn't seen him in a few months), and he said he got angry at all the meds he's been on, and that he " just stopped the damn things himself " (the depakote). I told him to watch out on stopping anything suddenly and to not DARE stop anything else suddenly and to call his doc about having stopped the Depakote suddenly. He said " screw 'em -- they aren't going to listen to what I have to say or want to do " . And they really haven't listened to him, not to mention he's now strung out on Ativan and Percocet that shouldn't have been prescribed to the extent it was. In his case, the docs did him a HUGE disservice to have EVER prescribed him (an admitted alcoholic who had relapsed after 17 yrs of sobriety), Ativan AND Percocet. Granted, he may have needed the Ativan while getting off the alcohol (he fessed up to the docs he had fallen off the wagon and that he wanted to stop drinking). They offered rehab or -- if he promised to stop drinking -- Ativan. He refused rehab and took the Ativan. As far as the Percoet, he may have needed it for a few weeks for pain, but it's been four months now, and they are STILL prescribing the Ativan and the Percocet hand over fist, not to mention he's not stopped drinking. And now? He has stopped the Depakote suddenly. I'm truly concerned for him. This kind of " poly pharmacy " happens, and I don't think he's " ever coming back " . He's out there now -- drunk, strung out, Percocetted up, and it's just a shame. Let me stop rambling - lol ! You all have a great day. Guest guest
Dave, I feel bad you are going through all this. I have been praying for you that you will come through this with little or no side effects. It seems to get so complex not knowing what is causing some of the problems. I am sure it has to be hard to know what meds to take. It seems like the meds with the greatest side effects are also the ones that work best. I will continue to pray that things will settle down for you, Dave. You are well loved here by many. Guest guest
Could not get Miss Silky into a kennel on short notice so I get to stay home. +Dave, Maybe Miss Silky knew that it's best for you to stay home and out of the yukky weather. It's also good to stay away from others and the viruses' going around. Just wished you could've enjoyed the party anyways. I think that when we were younger we all about the cure that could kill you. We are now living in that era. I agree Bill, but add one other point. The cost of a drug that works is exponentionaly related to the relief gained. Just watching the news and there was a report on the cost of some of the drugs that can give colon cancer patients a little more time and a better quality of life for that extra time. Avastin is the drug that the Government of Saskatchewan will not pay for as it costs 54,000 dollars a year per patient. Of course the patient would have to live that long, which the long odds are against. We hear the same things about Remicade, Humira, Enbrel and the rest of those drugs. Provincial health plans shudder when they are prescribed and want to be very sure that every other lower cost treatment has failed first. It is not a problem for us as we now enjoy 100 percent coverage for prescription drugs through a combination of private plans. They gave another example of the crazyness of the cost of medicine. Thalidomide, a drug that caused havoc decades ago and was relegated to the basement and couldn't be given away, now costs $37.50 per pill. Someone is ripping off someone as they cannot claim all the development costs for the drug. All they found out was that while tragic when taken by pregnant women for nausea, works on some cancers. Guest guest
Dave, you have my prayers, too. I pray peace to your mind and body and all of us in this support group. Re: About the cost of drugs that can really change the progression of disease: It is my personal opinion that most of these drug companies are the " neo-mafia " of our current age. The increase in cost of drugs, health care, and energy (all things that we cannot live without), have us caught in a hostage type of situation. These huge companies get all the benefits and tax savings from our government, but do not forward the savings on to us. It is a matter of greed on their part and can be proven by the exorbitant salaries that the CEO's and other officers of these companies receive. It used to be illegal drugs, gambling, manufacturing, etc., now it is prescription drugs, health care, and the oil and natural gas industries. Guest guest
Hi Dave, Thanks for sharing your Prozac experience, and please keep updating us. When I hired my Rheumatologist the first thing he did was writing me a scrip for Oxycontin, the next thing he did was giving me scrips for Prozac and Elavil. I knew right away that he made the right call. I have the same side effects that you described in your previous post; untidyness and reading slowly etc. I am curious to know what to expect if I stopped using them. So, Thanks and keep 'em coming, Harv ReA/I'll be 51 in 2 weeks
Guest guest
Thank you all for your emails both on and off list and prayers, they are encouraging and comforting as I go through this. Prozac, Oxycontin and Elavil are good drugs for treating chronic pain. But as one gets older the more psychotropic drugs behave differently in us. When I started having Prozac build up in the brain, I was on 40 mgm of Prozac daily and took it for the last 9 years. I started off on 20 mgm but come winter I spiraled down into clinical depression further, so the dose went up to 40mgm. It worked well for all those years until mid summer last year. The weaning started by dropping to 20 mgm per day for 3 weeks, then down to 20 mgm every 2nd day for three weeks. I felt great and wanted to stop the drug then. He persuaded me to go for another 3 weeks on the alternate day dosing. I think that it took 4 and a half weeks for the excess Prozac left my body as last week was stupendously rotten. I felt myself slipping into depression and became ill-tempered and very moody. Enough so to affect others moods. The worst times began in the afternoon of the day I took Prozac and would even out a bit the next day but that changed. I became worse in the afternoon as before but now it lasted 24 hours at a time. I felt myself losing it yesterday and took an extra elavil and it helped somewhat and had to do the same today. When I got home from Church, Hazel and her mother were home from Swift Current, Saskatchewan. I did contact the family shrink this afternoon and he told me to take that extra Elavil 25 mgm at noonhour daily. He is going to get me in earlier than the 3rd week appointment I have now. Harv, wishing you an early happy 51st birthday. I have one coming up in 44 days, 1 hour and 25 minutes, but whose counting. Blessings and thanks to you all +Dave
Guest guest
I'm glad that Prozac was helpful for so many years, Dave. I've had a hard time getting off some medications. I stopped an anti-depressant cold turkey once not realizing that I shouldn't quit without a doctor's guidance. I had severe headaches and sleep paralysis along with an inner ear problem that caused my eyes to flutter when I laid down. The newer anti-depressants are not benign drugs. I would like to get off the 5 mg of methadone that I take. I find that I have a real loss of energy during the day when I don't take it. I just feel uncomfortable. Hope you feel better soon and get it all worked out. Kay
Guest guest
Would like to know if anyone had any problems with their child`s appetite while on prozac? Changed SSRI`s from celexa to prozac 7.5 mg in A.M. This little boy is hypoglycemic a very picky eater 2 days on prozac not eating anything but dry cerial. He is sleeping now & happy. Has anyone have this happen if so will this be an adjustment to this med? I see this could be a side affect on prozac. Curious woul love to know any experiences while on this medicine. Thanks Carole

Guest guest
Hi Carole, We switched my son from Celexa to Prozac about ten days ago and noticed a dip in his appetite right away, but he bounced back in a BIG way after about the fifth day. So it could very well just be part of your son's adjustment period. Of course, if you don't see improvement after a few more days, definitely let Dr. G know.
