Guest guest
How long has he been on valtrex? Are you washing off the blue dye? Is he on an anti fungal? Guest guest
Yes, he is on diflucan 200 mgs. We have tried valtrex 3 times now. THis past time we stuck it out the ongest we could ....90 days. He would attack us pull our hair and bit us. He would also bite his own arm and hand. He would just go into a rage for a few minutes and then be fine again. I read all about aggression and it is related to serotonin. I am wondering if valtrex some how disrupts the serotonin and that's why Dr G puts all kids on an SSRI like prozac which regulates serotonin.  >My son has done terribly on valtrex and I was wondering if it was because he was not on an SSRI. Guest guest
I've never heard or read anything about it affecting serotonin levels. When I asked Dr. G (several years ago) why he insisted on a SSRI for my son, he said that he finds that the viral issues he treats tend to affect the temporal lobe greatly which SSRIs help balance. Clearly, 90 days is enough time to determine if Valtrex is appropriate for your child. Have you tried Famvir? My son had much difficulty with Valtrex the first time he tried it. After about a month, Dr. G switched him to Famvir because of behavioral and hyperactivity side effects. A year later, he was able to take Valtrex without any side effects. Guest guest
, we had the same issue with Valtrex. It could be due to yeast. I also think it may have been causing seizures in my son - we muscle tested for it and thats what the issue was supposedly, but this could have been due to our son being on Lamictal at the time which was causing increased seizures in conjunction with the Valtrex. We stopped both and the absence seizures stopped. I would love to try Famvir though! Pam > > >My son has done terribly on valtrex and I was wondering if it was because he was not on an SSRI. Guest guest
that scenario is plausible, valtrex could be disrupting serotonin (in theory at least) through changing interferon pathways - downstream of interferon is something called IDO for short, and IDO is crucial in tryptophan metabolism and its conversion into serotonin-melatonin etc (therefore sleep disturbances?) no idea what to do about it though, some of the suggested solutions I've heard of the years were supplementing niacinamide (vitB3), tryptophan, 5-htp, even GABA worth discussing with your doc and/or looking into further Natasa > > My son has done terribly on valtrex and I was wondering if it was because he was not on an SSRI.
