Guest guest
Thanks, Sue! That's a small dose compared to others I've read. Dr. Lerner prescribes much higher doses - I think I have the right doctor in mind. But if this dose keeps the viral action in check, I would be so pleased because my doctor does prescribe that dose for controlling cold sores. I get massive cold sore outbreaks on my lips and inside of my nostrils without it. I stopped taking it for awhile, but started up again after another outbreak. Were you always able to exercise? I was diagnosed with 's 18 months ago and the steroids have made most of my symptoms worse. I am waiting news on the XMRV/cortisol receptor information and am very curious about which anti-virals will prove effective. Re note from moderator: I find it a bit confusing - are you saying that a large dose of flushing niacin reduced post exercise symptoms? Thanks, F. Guest guest
Hi There, There are different dosages depending on the problem. 500mg Valtrex is a common dose for daily maintenance. Higher doses at longer term can cause organ damage so regular blood work is important. I have heard of 1 gram per day as suppressive dose but I recommend following your doctor's recommendations. 3 grams per day for 7 days is a common shingles dose. Regular acyclovir is normally given in higher doses. I am currently on 1200mg of acyclovir but will be starting 500mg Valtrex next week. _________________________________ " 2.1 Adult Dosing Recommendations Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis): The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of cold sores is 2 grams twice daily for 1 day taken 12 hours apart. Therapy should be initiated at the earliest symptom of a cold sore (e.g., tingling, itching, or burning). Genital Herpes: Initial Episode: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of initial genital herpes is 1 gram twice daily for 10 days. Therapy was most effective when administered within 48 hours of the onset of signs and symptoms. Recurrent Episodes: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of recurrent genital herpes is 500 mg twice daily for 3 days. Initiate treatment at the first sign or symptom of an episode. Suppressive Therapy: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent genital herpes is 1 gram once daily in patients with normal immune function. In patients with a history of 9 or fewer recurrences per year, an alternative dose is 500 mg once daily. In HIV-infected patients with a CD4+ cell count & #8805;100 cells/mm3, the recommended dosage of VALTREX for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent genital herpes is 500 mg twice daily. Reduction of Transmission: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for reduction of transmission of genital herpes in patients with a history of 9 or fewer recurrences per year is 500 mg once daily for the source partner. Herpes Zoster: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for treatment of herpes zoster is 1 gram 3 times daily for 7 days. Therapy should be initiated at the earliest sign or symptom of herpes zoster and is most effective when started within 48 hours of the onset of rash. " ________________________ Here is the .pdf from Glaxo where this information on dosages for different populations (children, immune compromised, etc) comes from. http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_valtrex.pdf I also found it interesting that they show valine (OTC amino acid - typically found in Branched Chain Amino Acids) and Probenicid, a prescription drug used for digestive issues prolonged the life span of Valtrex in the body. There are various graphs. Valtrex is a combination of valine and acyclovir that perhaps can be duplicated for those that do cannot get Valtrex. (acyclovir is generic and much less expensive) I have also been told that acyclovir has a very limited use and only works on the herpes family of viruses and is not effective on other types. Guest guest
Sorry the Valtrex didn't make a difference . I am nowhere near 100% . .I am at about 75 -85% functioning . .i do still have down days when I really over do it. I was not able to exercise for years! Just the past couple . .but very slowly . ..anti-virals are very helpful for me! Looking forward to my XMRV results . .I got them free through my doc in No CA . .the Santa area. I have neen a patient of his for 9 years and he put me in the study. Sue T > > > > Sue, what dose of Valtrex are you taking? Guest guest
My child has been on Valtrex for four weeks. He seemed more alert and had cognitive gains the first few weeks. However, behaviors have slowly but surely regressed. We will be going back to the doctor in two weeks. Hopefully starting an anti-fungal. Is this what some of you experienced in the beginning? Guest guest
My son had some improvements initially on Valtrex but developed major attitude problems and ugly behavior after the first few weeks. Dr. Goldberg switched him to Famvir for about a year and then he was able to go back to Valtrex without the problems. Gaylen In a message dated 8/23/2010 11:06:26 P.M. Guest guest
LH, We are around two months of Valtrex & saw some gains initially but we think it plateaus pretty soon. I don't think we have regressed but there are some other symptoms like verbal stimming etc that have gone up. A azole anti-fungal was needed to keep the yeast down. We switched from Diflucan to Ketcanzole that seems to have worked. ________________________________ From: " Googahly@... Guest guest
I have taken it for some years now, twice a day even though my counts are good. I used to take acyclovir before that. If I don't take the Valtrex then within days I get a herpes breakout and anyone who has that knows how nasty it can be. When I was a lot sicker in the pre HAART days I was taking Minocycline for years as a preventative measure against infection. I think there is some evidence to indicate that taking Valtrex or Acyclovir along with HAART actually helps but I'm not sure.
Guest guest
I agree with I have taken acyclovir (cheap generic) 3 x a WEEK since 1990 when Conant said it makes us live longer with HIV. also currently on rey and epzic. I take minocyline cuz it seems to keep the rosacia outbreaks on my head less. the new format looks pretty, but generally just takes up more room. what losers. ___________ Potrero HillSan Francisco <<I have taken it for some years now, twice a day even though my counts are good.
