Guest guest
Hey Jill, I don't know about lamictal. But for antivirals: With a lot of us (my son was one), the viral titers may not even show up until antivirals flush them out of hiding for the immune system to respond to them. So no it's not uncommon for them to shoot up in the first 6 months - when my son's HHV6 shot up (from zero and not an active infection), it was a celebration and came with great gains. You may find papers on the HHV6 Foundation's website that explains this phenomenon - I haven't read it in years. But essentially HHV6 and some others can manipulate the immune system to avoid detection and have a 'slow burn' infection, so when the antiviral starts 'hitting it', you get immune responses. So it could be a gooood thing. Watch the eye contact and then decide... It took months for us to see the change, but when it really happened, it was very cool. It had already gotten good, but then one day - it was even different. Then it takes time for the titers to come down anyway, so that number really has to be compared with info from several other things, like CBCs, immune panels, etc. HTH ________________________________ From: Jill Boyer <sjillboyer@...> nids <nids > Sent: Sun, October 10, 2010 6:18:05 AM Subject: Reactivated Herpes Virus from antibiotics and seizure drugs  Hi Listmates,  This is freaking me out, it appears that some antibiotics and epileptic medications are reactivating herpes virus. Guest guest
Hi Jill - Sorry to jump in (because I don't have any answers), but we just started lamictal on our 16 year old nonverbal son and are wondering why he is doing so poorly - school, therapy, respite workers, everyone is complaining that he is very anxious, stimmy, drops to the ground and refuses to get up, since about a week into beginning this med. At one point he had mildly elevated HHV titers. In the past we tried valtrex and had a horrible regression. He has not been on antivirals in several years though. We began lamictal due to his abnormal EEG - figured if we treated the EEG which we have not really considered in years that we might see some improvement. The other thing we have noticed with the lamictal is that his acne has worsened dramatically M. Guest guest
Hi Jill, This may be totally off base, but Dr. Usman has a theory about pathogens hiding out in " Biofilm " . I think she is talking mainly about gut pathogens, but she says the biofilm can be in the blood too. She says that's why we have success treating the pathogens, but they come back later -- they're still there, but just hiding out. I have a friend who has worked some with her to get rid of the biofilm, but I don't know much myself. They have to break the biofilm to get to the bugs. One of the things they are breaking up is fibrin. Lamictal has an occasional side effect of easy bruising and easy bleeding which might be related to breaking up fibrin. It's pure speculation, but maybe the lamictal is breaking up the biofilm that hides the HHV, and now the body sees and reacts to it. Maybe it has nothing to do with the lamictal and something else is causing the breakup of biofilm. Dr. Usman says you can always expect a period of worsening symptoms when you treat the biofilm. Guest guest
No one is sure why this happens. I doubt that it is viral reactivation, as it is usually also found in kids that are improving. No changes in meds are made based on the labs in my practice, unless there are also clinical findings that support the labs. Again, I can't speak for nids or Dr G, but thats what I do. bruce > > Hi Listmates, > > This is freaking me out, it appears that some antibiotics and epileptic medications are reactivating herpes virus. Guest guest
Hi Betty, Â I know very little about biofilm. Strange, I had a person ask about biofilm treatment on one of my Ohio biomedical list and my doctor is actually using this treatment which surprised me because she never mentioned it to me. Do you have any papers on websites that you can direct me to? If not, I can just use the good old google. I would like to research this further. Guest guest
My friend's son who is autistic, contracted 's syndrome from lamictal. Luckily it did not end in fatality, but it was extremely painful. > > > > Hi Listmates, > > > > This is freaking me out, it appears that some antibiotics and epileptic medications are reactivating herpes virus. Guest guest
Hi Jill, I don't have a better source than what suggested. After hearing my friend talk about it, I pulled up information Dr Usman had put together explaining her biofilm theory from Google. My friend who sees her has not been able to fully treat her daughter's biofilm issues yet. The die-off reactions are really bad. Her daughter is a severe gut kid who always has die-off reactions, so maybe less severe kids will have less die-off. I have noticed a pattern for my son after all these years. He seems to have a flair of symptoms some time in October and continues to worsen until after the first of the year. I have considered allergies and Vitamin D and infections, but I really have no idea why we go through this each year. It's a little different than the sporadic increases in infections that get better after treatment. Does your son have any patterns that you know of yet? I really feel like my son's immune system just doesn't function as well in the winter even when I supplement heavily with Vitamin D. Of course, who knows what he absorbs from the supplements. I've tried to figure how the biofilm theory might cause this " winter malaise " , but I can't come up with anything yet. What does your doc say about the lamictol? Guest guest
Hi Jill, Wow -- You've got a challenging medical situation on your hands. Your doctor is probably right about the biofilm protocol being to rough for your son at this point. My friend said it was very hard on her daughter, and she doesn't have seizures to worry about. I've never heard of anyone doing worse on Vitamin D either, but I also have another friend whose son is sensitive to just about every supplement. She starts about ten times lower than whatever the doctor tells her to do and works her way up until she gets a reaction. It takes much longer to try anything new this way, but she would rather take her time and avoid all those negative supplement crises. She doesn't have seizures to worry about either, and you definitely can't do this with seizure meds. But maybe the behaviors are related to some other supplement that seems so benign you're not even thinking about it. Her kid reacts to some of the oddest things. I considered lamictal briefly for the bipolar-mood swing type of thing. One reason it looks really good for autism is that it has a positive effect on the glutamate/aspartate NMDA overfiring problem. I didn't need such a strong med with no seizures, so I chickened out and didn't try it. My doctor wasn't keen on it. If I needed to treat seizures, I would probably try to talk my doctor into a trial of lamictal. I've also heard it has the least side effects. With an ME/CFS aunt, do you think your son has XMRV? Weird about all those seizures. Don't infections and fever increase the chance for seizures? Was there anything going around? Guest guest
Hi ,  Sorry to respond so late but your email was buried in my emails. I appreciate you posting your son's experience. In a strange sense, I feel some comfort that my son is not the only one that has not had a positive experience with Lamictal. I do wish we can find something that get rids of our kids seizures and makes them better. When researching antiseizure meds, it appears that Lamictal does have the least amount of side effects which is very discouraging. I find that Keppra really helps reduce my son' s grand mal seizures. He is still doing a combination of Keppra and Lamictal.  All the best,  Jill -- On Sun, 10/10/10, cemmom@... <cemmom@...> wrote: From: cemmom@... <cemmom@...> Subject: Re: Reactivated Herpes Virus from antibiotics and seizure drugs Date: Sunday, October 10, 2010, 4:30 PM  Hi Jill - Sorry to jump in (because I don't have any answers), but we just started lamictal on our 16 year old nonverbal son and are wondering why he is doing so poorly - school, therapy, respite workers, everyone is complaining that he is very anxious, stimmy, drops to the ground and refuses to get up, since about a week into beginning this med.
