Guest guest
Eating Feces I don't know who else to ask about this...Yesturday, I caught my son eating his feces after taking off his pull-up. I was horrified to see this and it hurts to think his poor little brain is so far gone, he doesn't even know what he is doing. He has been taking Valtrex for 4 months and is on a yeast med too.... Does anyone know why a child would do this? He has done it a coupole of times before going on Valtrex, so I don't blame the med for it...but am not seeing any improvments on the meds in 4 months time and am feeling very discouraged. I feel like we have tried everything in the last 5 years to get our son back, and he just keeps slipping further away! I had hope that the anti-viral route would help him, and we did see some gains in eye contact and vocalizations the first month he was on Valtrex, but since then, we have seen no changes...no improvements. We did notice after he gave blood for a bunch of blood tests, he had an immediate postivie reaction. He was happy and babbling and making eye contact like he was really trying to communicate with us. It makes us think there is something wrong with his blood....like when he gets rid of a bunch of it, he feels better....? He also has a weird coloring on one arm that gets darker almost purple when his behaviors are bad. We can't find any doctor to tell us what or why that is. One doctor thought he just had an overgrowth of blood vessels in that arm...but I don't know if I am buying that explanation. Guest guest
my son did this too when he was younger. grew out of it. my son is low functioning (but not severe). did yrs of bio medical with very little results. not doing a whole lot now a days but still research and keep an open mind. dont know why he did this. my son had major gut issues. i thought this was the culprit. vicki Eating Feces I don't know who else to ask about this...Yesturday, I caught my son eating his feces after taking off his pull-up. Guest guest
I don't think eating feces is that uncommon with our kids. I guess it is a form of Pica. Some say that it is OCD behavior -- our kids do plenty of that. I have a friend whose daughter has a pica problem that comes and goes. She has to be watched carefully when it gets bad so that she doesn't eat anything poisonous. This has been going on for years, and my friend knows by now that when she sees the pica, gut pathogens are out of control. If she figures out which pathogen to treat, the pica subsides again. They say that when you treat one type of pathogen (maybe you're killing some viruses), that you can sometimes make room for other pathogens to get a stronger hold (like bacterial infections and yeast and parasites). My son has been on valtrex for more than a year. Overall, I have seen very good cognitive improvements (I'm also doing IVIG, so not sure which is helping -- probably both). But during that time, I have had several episodes when OCD behavior went through the roof. Each time, I have tried different biomedical interventions to help, but nothing has helped until I treat with antibacterials or antifungals. I never seem to remember, so I have to go through the same steps every time. My kid is not a really bad gut kid, so it just doesn't occur to me. Does your son have bad gut issues? My friend with the daughter with pica has extreme gut issues. Don't give up on the valtrex yet. It was so slow for me. Maybe there are gains you just can't see through the increased behaviors. The blood thing is weird, but I'll bet it's connected. If only doctors would listen to us and take us seriously. ME/CFS people talk about " sticky blood " that doesn't carry oxygen well. Maybe the blood flows better when you remove a little. If a doctor took you seriously, they could come up with an answer. Guest guest
I don't get on here at all but, I saw the heading in my email and had to mention this. I have a cousin that she caught her toddler doing that after she woke up from a nap at least once. I know both of her children have issues of some kind or another. But you mentioned also that you think it is relation to his blood..... have you thought maybe about mercury or lead or something like that in his blood? Also, I have seen on television that your body can make too much blood, it could be too thin, too thick. My theory is that anything in the body that we have can be broken. Some doctors want to find it and some doctors don't want to be told to look for it. This is the world we live in. We all need degrees for the research that we have done and the things that we do for our children. I think that you are on the right track and I hope you get the answers you are looking for. > > > > I don't know who else to ask about this...Yesturday, I caught my son eating his feces after taking off his pull-up. Guest guest
I can't explain the eating feces issue but the improvement in behaviours after having the blood tests may be because he had a build up of too much iron in his blood. We have heard from a few of my son's doctors that giving blood on a regular basis is very helpful. He gets red of excess iron and his body then builds up a new set of blood cells. ________________________________ From: Betty <bettybona1@...> Sent: Mon, October 11, 2010 12:04:59 PM Subject: Re: Eating Feces  I don't think eating feces is that uncommon with our kids. Guest guest
Hi Tammy, I thought more about what helped most when my son's OCD got really bad on valtrex. Because we're doing IVIG, and because my son has a high ASO titer, my doctor gave him IV antibiotics. This really helped to get the OCD under control, but it only brought the ASO titers down a little. I think my son has a bit of a PANDAS issue, and I think that can get worse on valtrex. Have you considered PANDAS in your son? Betty > > I don't know who else to ask about this...Yesturday, I caught my son eating his feces after taking off his pull-up. Guest guest
Please keep in mind that not everyone with PANDAS presents with high strep titers. Our son only showed on Dr. Cunningham's CamKinase test - and he showed very high!! She did tell me that viral, bacterial and Lyme can create high CamKinase...just something to keep in mind. At least we are going in the right direction with him now instead of running in all different directions looking for everything and finding nothing. Guest guest
I am so sorry about what you are going through, Tammy. My only input is, that it is a developmental thing. Like your son is unaware, the same way a very young child or infant would be. Our kids with autism are so very sick and so stuck at a very early developmental stage, and they can stay stuck if they don't get the medical help they need. Their little brains nearly stop developing, depending on how sick they are. You can email me personally if you like. My daughter with autism did do this at first for a while but has grown out of it. -Jen > > > > I don't know who else to ask about this...Yesturday, I caught my son eating his feces after taking off his pull-up. I believe Jen is so right this is developmental & this will pass we went through this too.I know this is very difficult for you but as he gets better this all will stop. Hang in there & know you are not alone in this we are all going through the same things. My Blessings Carole
Guest guest
Thanks for all your replies. I think we will look into adding zinc and iron into his diet to help with some of this. I hope it isn't developmental....because he first did this when he was 5 or 6 and then on and off for the last 5 years. He is 10 now and starting to do it again. He keeps growing taller and older, but has no improvement in behavior or cognitive and speech development.
