Guest guest
a friend of mine was on celexa, but now she is taking Lamictal, its good for controlling seizures and also it has been found helpful in mental health issues. OCD24hours@... wrote:Before Lexapro was invented, I was on 160 mg daily of Celexa. This is an extremely high dose that only doctors in Europe recommend. So, for the first time in my life, I had a seizure when I was in a Wal-Mart. When I later went to a neurologist, he said I had an underlying predisposition to have seizures, and he was amazed that in my 40 years I had never had a seizure. He had me go on an anti-seizure medication in a low dosage, and all seemed fine, so he took me off of it and then I had another seizure. Since then, I've been on Depakote, an anti-seizure medication. I'm also on Lexapro, 30 mg per day.
Guest guest
I took generic Celexa. It seemed to do fine for me. Well, I should add, the same as the regular name brand. Celexa wasn't the drug for me...not at all. Barbara Celexa > I think the older sister of Lex is available in generic now. Guest guest
I'm diagnosed with bipolar II (which seems to be genetically linked to autism somehow) and the ADULTS I know who have taken it have not liked it due to various side effects or just plain it didn't DO anything. I can't remember weight gain being mentioned though. But everyone's different and who knows in a child? Most psych drugs that cause significant weight gain would be the antipsychotics often used off label in some autistic kids (usually the more severe ones I think.) I was on Seroquel after a very bad episode and I ballooned 35 pounds in two months and my cholesterol shot up to an insane level. The weight coming off now and the cholesterol dropped immediately now that I've been off it for months but it's slow being that I'm not a kid anymore! Guest guest
Hi Melody, actually I read Paxil was worst for weight gain. With the internet, guess it depends on where you read, LOL. Anyway, my son was on Celexa. For 9th and 10th grades. For him, skinny as he was (still is) some weight gain would have been nice. But he didn't gain any. Others I asked that did have some gain, it wasn't too much considering how much other meds can make you gain. I think maybe 10 lbs might have been the most I read (I know, I certainly don't want to gain 10 lbs!). But everyone is different, she may gain nothing like my son or 5 lbs, 8...people vary. Celexa worked great for his OCD! > > my 13 you aspie daughter developed ocd behaviors which are new just this school year. she is currently on prozac which helps with anger and rigidity alot but stomach cramps and all that prevent her from increasing her dosage. psych gave her an rx for celexa yesterday and from i have read this is the worst ssri for significant weight gain. for those who have tried celexa, can you share your experiences? in particular was there weight gain? > > regards, melody >
Guest guest
Thanx chris…will proably give it a try. My tiny 13 yo daughter—4ft 10in, weighs 92 pounds, would be very unhappy with weight gain and may then use that reason to not try any future meds…so I am cautious. Glad it was effective for your son. Seems you know much about meds..is that based on your experience or is that part of your job? Regards, melody
Guest guest
Melody, my son's OCD began in 6th grade, he's now 21! So knowledge is just from what I've read from doctors who treat OCD and experiences other parents have had over the years (plus my own son's). I joined a group that was for Celexa users when my son had to begin it, so got some good info from them over the time he was on it too. Good luck with it! > > Thanx chris.will proably give it a try. Guest guest
Hi Melody ~ I can definitely concur with the the fact of it being the worse SSRI for weight gain. Between that and the fact that I'm on prednisone and imuran, I've gained like 100 + pounds. I think at least 25 lbs was attributed to the Celexa as I was on the Celexa before prednisone was ever introduced to my regime. I have to say it really helps my anxiety a great deal though. I wish your daughter the best of luck on it. Guest guest
Thanx jen. I will keep that in mind. The trouble is, it can take so much time to tell if something is actually working. I don’t look forward to the trial period but hoping to find her some relief. Hoping you find the same. Regards, melody
Guest guest
Thank you..i hope it helps with her anxiety too. how long did it take to gain the 25 pounds. Prednisone is a double whammy there, I watched my mother in law gain weight from that too. hope you are feeling better. Guest guest
My son is on his 2nd day of celexa. His school teacher said he had the best day ever. Was very happy and loving. Have others seen great mood behavior and happiness from celexa and this quickly?
Guest guest
My son was happier and understanding better from the get go w/celexa Marilyn Re: Celexa My son used to take Lexapro. I noticed better mood the same afternoon. So it is possible that effects can be that quick. Lucy > > My son is on his 2nd day of celexa. His school teacher said he had the best day ever. Guest guest
Trudy, I have been taking celexa for a couple years and it has done wonders for me. My family calls them my happy pills. They tell me I am so much better when I take them and I can feel the difference too. The reason I agreed to take them was because I can stop anytime I want. So from time to time I take a break from them. Hope this helps. Oh I take mine at supper time. They are not a day or night pills. Guest guest
DonnaThey worked for me as well, a whole bunch. However, when the BIG stress was back, the Wellbutrin is better for me. They may even make me a bit speedy; but, I need that to get my day started. Right now I'm not taking my Celexa either.Gloria Trudy, I have been taking celexa for a couple years and it has done wonders for me. My family calls them my happy pills.
