Guest guest
Until I had stablized my thyroid, I would always have a reaction to cheese, yet I was not allergic to it on the allergy tests...I found on the internet something about the effect of fremented dairy products on immune antibodys so that lead me to believe if they were studying it, then it must do something...?? I've been having an affair with spinach... fresh juice and steamed. My goiter feels bigger and more uncomfortable since I have been eating spinach this week. I was wondering if it was that or an adjustment needed on my supplements. hmmm... Margaret
Guest guest
Thanks Kozy.....I wasn't sure and since my eyes are bothering me I'm trying to watch my diet - not sure what is and isn't good for me. Read 's post about possibility of green vegetables being a problem so going to stay away from green plants for a while. My right eye hurts to the touch and actually HURTS. Weird stuff. should seriously consider writing a book in the future about diet and supplements. Thx again, MOna Re: Diet Question Mona, Hypos are the ones that have high cholestrol problems. Guest guest
said that spinach was grown in soil that had a high cadmium content that could collect in the eye muscles and affect Graves eye disease as I recall... Sheri Lynn
Guest guest
I believe I read somewhere on his new website (I could be wrong) that says something about green vegetables. I also read somewhere that spinach was not good for Graves patients....not sure if it's because of high iodine or not but after reading I avoid. I like spinach too! Maybe JOhn can add some insight to this conversation..............MOna Re: Diet Question said to stay away from green plants for awhile? I was going to ask him about spinach and goiter. Guest guest
> > > -Does anyone know if cheese is bad for Graves Disease/TED? Hey Mona! I used to get heart symptoms (or maybe these could be causing your eye symptoms?) when I ate anything that's: > aged -- like most cheeses > fermented -- like soy or teriyaki sauce > overripe -- like bananas can get, real fast.... > smoked or cured -- meats, like salami, pepperoni, sausage > Some wines, such as Chianti, as well as some beers, have a high tyramine content. And spoiled, or improperly refrigerated food and beverages as well. Please bear with me on this one: These happen to be called " high-tyramine " foods. (I think they're also high in histamines, which mess with the immune system...?) Anyway, people who are on certain medications called " monoamine oxidase inhibitors " (I'm not, tho) must avoid these foods as they can cause heart problems, esp. blood pressure problems. What does this have to do with the thyroid? Here's my wild guess, so forgive me if I'm on a wild goose chase here - What the hay? In 's supplement list, under COPPER: It [copper] is also essential for MONOAMINE OXIDASE production which degrades hormones after they have fulfilled their function. Does anyone else have problems with cheese and some of these other types of foods AND think they might not be getting enough copper? Is there an " enzyme " and " amine " expert in the house? I sure ain't! All I know is monoamine oxidase helps balance tyramine. Spinach is not my good friend either. Chris
Guest guest
Hi Mona: I have Graves with Ted. In the last 6 months my eyes have improved to the point that they appear normal again. Here's what works for me: No caffeine (that means no coffee, tea, colas, chocolate, etc.), no dairy except yogurt. Regular blood tests to make sure my thyroid levels are in mid-range. I'm on (2) PTU daily, (1) in am and (1) in afternoon, about 8 hrs. apart. In place of coffee, I drink ginger root tea (no caffeine). In place of milk, I use a soy beverage. My eyes improved significantly when I discontinued caffeine, at 's suggestion. Most of the time I only had 2 small cups of coffee a day and wasn't really expecting any results when I quit. Happy day! This is a confusing disease and what helps one may not help someone else. It's helpful to keep a journal to record what seems to help your eyes, and what doesn't. Hope this helps you. Guest guest
will probably mention that the spinach is taking away the copper. Iron food is good and spinach has A too. The reason 'greens' are mentioned though is cadium. I think it was mentioned that lettuce is grown in sewage or something. That's enough to make you think. eh? Guest guest
What I find interesting about cheese is the salt; to build protein in the blood one needs adequate salt intake. I wonder in a nice way what your body is trying to balance. Swan On 13 Apr 00, at 14:00, KTenn36117@... wrote: Mona, Hypos are the ones that have high cholestrol problems. I have high cholestrol. Guest guest
Hi, I have been in remission for over 1/2 year. I had my cholesterol checked recently. It was 175-right in the middle. The LDL that sticks placque to the arteries was alittle and the HDL that takes placque away from the arteries somewhere was really alot. It wasn't very balanced. The TSH was 1.1. I am hoping it doesn't go hyper again. I can relate all too well to everybody wondering why the body is getting carried away like this and being sick. I eat lecithin by the tablespoonful to ease hunger pangs; 5 grams of fat; 2.5 are unsaturated, 1 is monosaturated and .5 is saturated. I take it to satiate my hunger pangs. It has trace B vitamins. I have gained about 7 pounds since remission. Maybe it's the straight fat but I don't really get fat in alot of my diet. And I was hungry alot when I noticed I had hyperT. Guest guest
My new question... Swan and and whomever Because of the hormonal changes right before ones cycle.... could that also affect goiter. My accupunturist and I looked up the last time my goiter was swollen or feeling tight and it was the same time last month ie. right before my period. I am thinking spinach is ok, just not so much of it. I think it has to do with my hormones. What do y'all think? Also, the combo (with oyster shell among other things)my accupunturist has me on for goiter is really working. She told me to take a little more before my period. Guest guest
Cheese and yogurt feel good to me. Milk by itself makes me feel ill, as well as too much icecream etc. I am learning that all too important lesson that too much of anything is not good for you. I have a yogurt a day and about 4 ounces of cheddar (in an egg yolk omelette) and that's it for dairy. I am trying to follow 's diet tips.... fresh carrot juice etccc....... I have to say that I have never felt better in my life. Diet, exercise, accupunture, herbs, vitamins, no more coffee, no more cigarettes...... my endo can bite it and her RAI. p.s. i have needles in my ears for nicotine cravings. anyone else ever have these. they are working, but they are a little uncomfortable. Guest guest
Thankyou so much. I was hoping my accupunturist and I had figured correctly. Now I know what to expect. I was feeling hypo for weeks and then this week, with minimal changes to my diet, I felt hyper and my goiter feels swollen and tight. Good... I will wait until after my period to see if I feel better. And then if I feel off I can analyze my current intakes of meds and supplements. Thankyou again, Margaret
Guest guest
.....I was told it takes a few weeks to rid the body of nicotine. Removing the habit of lifting that cigarette can take a while. You're doing a good thing for your body! I quit smoking cigarettes 24 years ago and now hate the smell. (I only smoked for 4 years but I still coughed for a year after quitting). My real addition was M & Ms. They upset my stomach and the caffeine didn't help - one morning I woke up without the craving or desire. Not sure why. Good luck!!! Guest guest
Thanks joyce.....not sure what's bothering my eyes, although I do suspect I'm creeping into hyper zone again. I'm currently on 50mg PTU/day so may have to increase meds. I'm one of those cases where eyes are affected by thyroid levels when too close or in hyper zone. Going for blood test on Monday. Thanks for the info and glad to hear your eyes have improved. Mona Re: Diet Question Hi Mona: I have Graves with Ted. Guest guest
Margaret, Yes!! Hormonal changes will affect your goiter/thyroid. I've had the same experience and earlier this year told me that he's heard of this before. The week prior to my period I become noticably more hyper: my weight drops three pounds no matter how much I eat, pulse goes up, crabbier, quite warm. Then at the end of my period I start to FREEZE! I'm constantly cold, tired, and it's almost as if my thyroid plunges and I *feel* (but am not really) hypo. My weight also goes right back up three pounds. The Chinese medical doctor and homeopath I'm seeing both say this is to be expected and working to make the thyroid fluctuations during the menstrual cycle less extreme. From what I understand, this is a slow process and will take some time. So I continue to have acupunture every other week, take herbs, and homeopathic remedies all with the longterm vision that the thyroid will be more balanced. I am especially on the alert for hypo symptoms because I have both Hashimotos and Graves disease, but have never experienced the hypo side. So far, my thyroid levels remain normal, but I feel like a bit of a ping pong during the before and after week of my period. Hope that helps. . . Re: Diet Question > My new question... Guest guest
Only when I bump or sleep on my ear. The pain from that is very minimal, and non-existent when I leave them alone. The ones I have have a bandaid attached to them (there's three in each ear) and nobody has noticed them. I even wear my hair tucked behind my ears! I say go for it, especially if you are in pain! My accupunturist warned me of a little euphoria. I welcomed it, of course. Margaret
Guest guest
Hi Margaret, For the first time during treatment this week my accupunturist used needles in my lt ear and scalp for pain in my lt thunb.( the joint is almost gone from ostearthritis and is very painful) It worked and he said he could put a more or less permanent one in my ear for the pain. I didn't know it could be done for smoking. Can you feel it?I don't smoke, but I was wondering how it would feel . Deb
Guest guest
, Any fruit can make you fat if you eat too much of it and don't get enough exercise. Have you checked the glycemic index of the fruits you're eating? Pineapple has a pretty high GI. As do canatloupe and watermelon. So eating any of those fruits is about the same as eating mashed potatoes or cake. Why do you think you need to lose weight? Best wishes, Celeste Guzman wrote: > HELLO ALL: Do fruits like (pineapples, cantaloupes, and papaya) make you > fat? Because now i am adding to my weight loss diet fruits. Guest guest
One note( as discussed in Bob Arnot's Diet Revolution) is that the fruit you mentioned below has quite a bit of fiber in it, thus there is a benefit to eating it. The only fruit I can honestly say has no fiber value and has high GI is the pineapple. Check out the Mendosa sight plus check out Bob Arnot's book. I'm not trying to push it, I've just read the thing and believe me it explains all of this in detail. :-) > > HELLO ALL: Do fruits like (pineapples, cantaloupes, and papaya) > make you > > fat? Guest guest
, I don't think that boosting your self esteem is a very good reason for losing weight. Why do you think someone would remember you if you lost 10 pounds? People usually remember someone more for their personality or their accomplishments or their charitable works. It's usually not because of their skinniness. There's no reason why you shouldn't have good self esteem right now.
