Hi ,

I don't know, how heavy you are... but if you think

you should lose 10lbs, and you are serious about it, I

believe that our diet is the best...

My husband and I have hypothyroidism and keep our

weight pretty well down by eating mainly vegetables

and grains, white fish about once a week... we don't

juice the vegetables (even though that is healthy

too), but eat them either raw, steamed or cooked,

depending on the vegetable. My husband lost about

25lbs since we are on this diet... We just eat

whenever we feel like it and make sure we are never

hungry...

We snack on vegetables like cucumbers, celery, etc.

We don't use much oil (and then only olive oil)... but

we do put a few drops of flax seed oil on most dishes

(only on warm food, though, not hot!!!), which makes

everything quite tasty.

We don't have any real junk food in the house. My

husband likes rice puffs, which he has at least once a

day with a milk called Rice Dream...

We toast rice cakes in the frying pan, let it cool and

put some flax seed oil on...and maybe some Vegan

Rella, a cheese made out of rice that makes a tasty

treat...

We try to stay away from soy products, because they

may inhibit thyroid function.

If you eat, whenever you are hungry and nothing that

makes you fat, you will most probably lose weight...

People, who followed our suggestion, have slimmed down

too...

It is not as easy as it may sound, but this is a diet

that works... and we got used to it.

Besides, you can imagine that we feel much better than

before (when we ate processed, oily, etc. food)

Tell me what you think...

u see i get bored a lot, i get depressed a lot on this diet, but i will keep

it, because i don't want to be fat and ugly like most people are. I mean i

wanna stand above the crowds.

Well i will follow your suggestion i will eat a whole plate of vegetables

if i get hungry between meals, control the amount of complex carbs and keep

eating a lot of green vegetables

Laneybeth,

I'll throw in my two cents about diet. If you have encepalopathy (do things

like wander the halls at night and feel sleepy during the day), get

forgetful (really forgetful like forgetting to take the iron out of the

refrigerator) inattentive (not notice you shirt is on inside out) and the

such DO NOT eat red meat. Aside from that an occasional bit of animal fat

should not hurt ... Personally I'd rather eat just about anything rather

than a big Mac, but that is personal preference. Low grade liver disease

(whatever that is) I have been told high protein. With a 1200 ALT your liver

is most likely in big trouble and the big Mac may throw you over onto our

continent.

Fortunately someone else probably has more scientific advice. Take care and

have a carrot.

[ ] Diet question

Hi all,

hope you are all feeling as well as possible today :)

I just was wondering what foods you are all avoiding for AIH more

specifically. Because when I was first diagnosed the specialist

said " low fat -no fat - low sodium " but a few other people I have

spoken to have said that they can eat whatever they want except they

just don't have a lot of saturated fats. I have been sticking to a

very low fat, low sodium, high calcium diet and it's been difficult

because I'm a pretty fussy eater. But naturally I want to eat

whatever will help my liver the most. So do any of you who have AIH

have the occassional big mac etc?

thanks for reading

oh by the way my alt is still at about 1200 - may impact what diet i

Hi Laneybeth!

I eat what ever I want within moderation. I was told to try to stay

away from fats too, as we AIH'ers can have trouble with our

gallbladders. High fat intake can cause pains and aching in the

liver area caused by the gallbladder spasming. They usually tell you

to stay away from the salts because of the steroids. The steroids

put you at risk for high blood pressure as it is, but too much sodium

can add to that. But neither of those instructions means you have to

constantly live a life of deprevation. I kind of have a pattern I

follow. I eat like a real good girl all week. Then allow myself

some treats on the weekend. But I will tell you I eat some sort of

chocolate every single night for desert - I am a chocoholic. But

even with that have still lost 58 lbs. You don't have to be perfect

all the time. Just be sure if you notice you do feel particularly

yucky or sore in the URQ after eating something, you should probably

try to avoid that food in the future. Just eat healthy is all. You

do that most of the time, you can have that Big Mac. Hope I helped

some.

, thank you for your response. The kicker of it is that

since the gastric bypass, I eat very little, if any, wheat, gluten,

or pasta. If anything, it is one Wasa crisp a day. The carbs I do

consume come in the form of veggies and fruits. Come to think of

it, I do eat pretzels though. Hmmmm....time to hit the gluten free

section of the supermarket. Thanks again.

,

Pretzels used to be my #1 snack -- salty, crunchy,

low-fat pretzels. Since I started avoiding wheat, I've

switched to low-fat microwave popcorn (no butter),

baked gluten-free corn chips, cucumber slices,

mini-carrots or raw potato slices when I need that

salty-crunchy snack.

(And since starting the MTX, I've switched to gourmet

ginger ales instead of that glass of wine after

dinner. My life these days is simply full of

compromises!)

Hope that helps!

Thanks, . Gourmet ginger ale is right up my alley. I

haven't had any alcohol since starting the Duragesic patches - talk

about flying high - they would either be scraping me off the ceiling

or wiping me off the floor, not sure which.

I am definitely going to try cutting out all wheat and gluten. It

certainly can't hurt and there are plenty of other things I like.

Thank you guys for the suggestions.

Have you ever really read the labels on food? There is

wheat or wheat gluten -- and/or " high fructose corn

syrup " -- in almost every processed food product on

the market.

When I started reading labels, I even found gluten in

my beef jerky, chewing gum, and tomato soup! I can't

completely avoid it, but I can make informed choices.

Unless you can build your diet around fresh,

unprocessed produce and meat, you're going to have the

read the fine print on every product you buy.

I still buy most of my groceries at the regular

grocery, but I find yummy substitutes at Wild Oats and

Whole Foods Market. They can be more expensive, but on

par with the " specialty products " at my regular

grocery.

I am sure all of us are doing different

things but yes I eat organic, drink raw milk and cream, as well as drink Kefir

and Kombucha. I eat all grass-fed beef

(when at home) and range free chicken and eggs I purchase from local

farmers. I also eat a lot of coconut

oil. This is also suppose to help with

they thyroid.

I do tend me sensitive to breads, etc. so I

try to steer clear of them. If I eat

them I eat sourdough or sprouted grain.

Hope this helps.

I am curious as to what kind of diet most of you are

on. In

particular do you limit processed foods, eat strictly organic, eat or

avoid dairy, etc? Do you supplement Omega 3's & 6's? How do you

feel your diet affects your thyroid and iodine supplementation?

I am currently trying to eat a lot more coconut oil. I have just upped by dosage from 2-4 tablespoons/day to 8-9 tablespoons. I was going to do this about a year ago but like most of us (even though I believe high fat is good for you) I still struggled with it. I guess the government has really done it's job in brainwashing me. Anyhow I am now doing the full 8-9 tbls. a day so it will be interesting to see what happens. I do eat raw butter and olive oil. Pretty much try to stay away from all of the other oils. I make my own mayonnaise etc.

Do you just eat it or do you mix it with stuff? I bought some and so

I put two to three tablespoons in my Kefir every morning along with one to two raw eggs. Then at lunch I put it in herbal tea and yes it does float on top but I just keep stirring it. Then at dinner I have a glass of tea again. I have just started taking this much so I am going to have be creative and come up with some other stuff. Last year I mixed up some coconut oil with some coco and stevia and it was good. It tasted like an Almond Joy candy bar. I might have to do that again because it is hot here in Florida and even though I like my tea sometimes it is too hot to drink it.

Do you notice that it helps with thyroid?  We noticed very quickly with my daughter's diabetes that it makes a huge difference in her blood sugars when she eats trans fats, blood sugars elevate and stay high for a long time versus eating whole foods cooked with good fats.  We use only coconut, olive and flax, and occasionally sesame.  I also make mayonnaise, salad dressing, etc from scratch since reading about all the evils of soybean oil.  LinnOn Jun 7, 2006, at 3:52 PM, allyn ferris wrote:I am currently trying to eat a lot more coconut oil. I make my own mayonnaise etc.allyn

I have found some that taste pretty good

that have a good coconut flavor. I put

three tbls. in my kefir in the morning so it is not

very noticeable. I put 1-2 tbls. in some berry zinger

tea which is not bad. I have also tried

mixing it with peanut butter and recently chocolate hazelnut butter. Both work pretty good. I am going to mix up another brew of vco,

cocoa and stevia with some coconut flakes.

A year ago I made it and it tasted like an almond joy. Have

to keep it in the fridge though or it will melt.

Bonnie, Thanks for all the info, have read a lot of Price.  I am thoroughly convinced that fats are a major issue in a lot of illnesses that people have, bad ones that is.  Lots of people just don't seem to care, as long as they can keep eating what they are used to.  Even my daughter's endo and the dietician they use are pretty careless, in my opinion, in advising the kid's what and how to eat.  The dietician and I haven't seen eye to eye since my daughter was diagnosed.  I was absolutely stunned when I was handed a guide to all the fast food restaurants that showed how to calculate the carbs for the diabetics.  When I told the dietician I wouldn't be needing it, she asked why.  I told her that I didn't allow my kids to eat that way to begin with, I certainly wasn't going to allow my daughter to start eating like that after being diagnosed.  I had to go out of my way to find a book that listed real whole foods.  Their motto is that everybody eats like that so they just go with the flow.  You'd think it would be part of their job to teach people how to manage food, but it's obvious that dieticians don't necessarily know much about nutrition.Linn     On Jun 11, 2006, at 1:24 PM, braguet@... wrote:In a message dated 6/7/2006 5:37:02 PM Eastern Daylight Time, linnmiller@... writes:Do you notice that it helps with thyroid?  We noticed very quickly with my daughter's diabetes that it makes a huge difference in her blood sugars when she eats trans fats, blood sugars elevate and stay high for a long time versus eating whole foods cooked with good fats.  We use only coconut, olive and flax, and occasionally sesame.  I also make mayonnaise, salad dressing, etc from scratch since reading about all the evils of soybean oil.  Linn,If you are interested in the good fats that contribute to health (I see you have already found some of them) then I would make a suggestion to try the Weston Price website www.westonaprice.org.  It is very interesting reading and could help in the areas that you have spoken of. Bonnie

I use regular bananas, not Plantains. Yes, they are high in sugar, but the coconut oil stabilizes the sugar. It is a treat I don't do it all the time.

You'd think it would be part of their job to teach people how to manage food, but it's obvious that dieticians don't necessarily know much about nutrition.

I fully agree with you that they don't even try to teach the dangers of eating wrong. Maybe they don't even know themselves. How great of you to give your kids a great foundation on nutrition, they will appreciate it later if they don't already.
