Guest guest
Hi! Hope you are all having a great weekend. My son got to surf a few weeks ago with " Surfer's Healing, " which is an AWESOME organization. www.surfershealing.org I stumbled upon 5 YouTube videos a local dad is making about Surfer's Healing. In the first video, he interviews founder and pro surfer Izzy Paskowitz, father of a son with (severe) autism. Here is the link to the first video: <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDVIu51eUcw & feature=related> & feature=related I wrote the dad making these videos to tell him that there is another side to the story, that kids are recovering and to ask him if he would be interested in helping to spread the word. Here is his (surprising) response: " Hey Kristy, I would love to talk to you but I don't know enough about Autism to comment. I know that McCarthy feels the way you do and Izzy feels differently. I even had another mom tell me that she is insulted to think that her son will be " cured " of Autism. She does not like McCarthy!! I guess I would believe that there are different levels and some kids may change (treatable) and others are autistic for life. But again, I don't know anything, this is just what I have heard. As a father of 4 I know that I would be very anxious to " treat " my child if it was available. But, I also know living with 2 Asthmatics that some things are " genetic " and no matter what we do they still have asthma attacks. We beat ourselves up all the time wondering if we can improve the dust levels, pet dander, diet, medicines etc. But at the end of the day it is genetic!! And when my kids get a cold or ear infection they immediately have an asthma attack. Now I am rambling but I think you get my point. " What would you say to him? Why would people be insulted to think their son would/could be cured? I know I'm going to share not only my son's progress, but also how I was diagnosed with asthma a few years ago, but have not had a single symptom in over 2 years because of lifestyle changes. I'm also going to recommend that he read, " Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies " .
