Once you have done a little more research on this subject only you will truly know in your gut what you would like to do next. It probably depends on the seriousness of her headshape but as others will say, I wish we had gotten my son in a band at 6 mos. old rather than 9 mos. old. It still helped him but he probably would've seen greater correction. Their growth really seems to slow alot at 12 mos. old and sometimes a little earlier. I hope this helps and good luck with your decision. We support you in whatever you would like to do.... Sue Colin F., 13 mos. Guest guest
My daughter wore a STARband from age 9 to 12 months. She received wonderful correction. I beleive surgery is pretty rare for treating plagio. Also at such a young age your daughter could benefit from repositioning. Have you checked out the repositioning file. Also there are several before and afters in the photos section. Guest guest
Hi Desire', Welcome to the group! Did your daughter have any xrays or a ctscan to rule out premature fusion of the bones in her head? As long as that (craniosynostosis) has been ruled out, surgery shouldn't be needed as long as you have an experienced ortho. At 4.5 mos of age and 13mm of assymetry she should be able to get to a basically normal head shape. My daughter started with 20mm of assymetry and was banded at 4.5 mos and her head looks great now. In just 10 weeks her head improved 10mm! The most important thing in your situation is to make sure your ortho is experienced in treating plagio! Where will you be going for treatment? Maybe we have a member in your area who can give you some input. , mom to Hannah, DOCgrad Cape Cod, Ma http://hannahsnoggin.typepad.com/hannahs_noggin/ > > Well I have a 4 1/2 month old who needs a band. Here they offer STAR > bands and I was wondering if anyone has one,or knows some more > information about it.Madison is 13 off they said,if you know what I > mean,is there a surgery involved in this? > Desire'

Guest guest
Desire, Welcome to the group. We have had a lot of babies in STARbands. Where are you located? We may have some locals. The key thing is how much experience the ortho has treating babies and using the starband. Do you know? We have some questions to ask ... Orthomerica's (Makers of the STARband) Questions for Parents to Ask a Prospective OrthotistFeel free to print out this list of questions and refer to them during your initial consultation with the orthotist. Establishing and maintaining open lines of communication will enhance yours and your child's experience with a cranial remolding orthosis.http://www.orthomerica.com/products/cranial/cranial_questions.htm Cranial Tech's Questions to Ask the Doctor or Orthotist:The quality of treatment available varies widely for children with plagiocephaly. One way to avoid pitfalls is to be aware of them. Print this page and use it for your research.http://www.cranialtech.com/Treatment/selecting.html Questions To Ask The Doctor and Orthotist/Clinician Once an official diagnosis is made and a course of treatment is planned, many children are referred to an Orthotist or Treatment Facility in order to obtain cranial orthosis. Here is a list of questions to ask the Orthotist/Clinician. http://www.cappskids.org/QuestionsForTheDoctorAndOrthotist.htm 13 mm is most likely the cranial vault asymmetry measurement. This means if you drew an X on the top of your baby's head one side would be 13 mm longer than the other. This is moderate severity. The STARband should work well and as long as there is no premature fusing of the sutures (most likely not is your dr hasn't mentioned it) then no surgery would be required. At 4 1/2 months Madison should receive good correction. mom to na 17 months DOC Grad desiredbttfly77@... wrote: Well I have a 4 1/2 month old who needs a band. Here they offer STAR bands and I was wondering if anyone has one,or knows some more information about it.Madison is 13 off they said,if you know what I mean,is there a surgery involved in this?Desire'For more plagio info
Guest guest
Welcome to the group ! Your answer really depends on exactly what insurance you have. Most insurance companies have helmets listed under durable medical equipment (DME). We also have a huge database of info on who's insurance paid for what. Guest guest
Thanks! Our insurance provider is Physicians Plus. I hope that there won't be a problem because there is no way we can pay 3000.00 plus dollars for a helmet. Caleb is having surgery on both of his eyes on the 31st for strabismus...so that's a hefty co-pay in itself. > > > > Hi everyone! My name is and I have an eight month old baby > > boy named Caleb. Guest guest
Hello , Since you mentioned that Caleb has scoliosis - I wanted to be sure to call out the possibility of a neck tightness problem called " torticollis " to you. Its a culprit in a lot of plagiocephaly cases (causes children to turn their head to one side and tip it to the other). It is thought to derive from an awkward/cramped position in the womb and sometimes correlates with scoliosis and hip dysplasia. Here's a link to an article that gives an overview of " tort " : http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/baby/babyills/10912.html And here's a link to a discussion group that focusses on it and has members who are dealing with scoliosis as well: torticolliskids/ If you are seeing a pediatric orthopedic specialist for the scoliosis, I would recommend asking them to assess torticollis as well. My daughter was treated for torticollis and plagiocephaly in '03. She had a helmet for correcting the plagicephaly, and we did neck stretching excersizes and saw a physical therapist for the torticollis. Torticollis is a problem that Early Intervention (called Birth-To-Three in some states) can address. Early Intervention is a state department of health program that provides many different types of early intervention services to infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. You might consider doing a web search on Early Intervention in your state to find contact information for your local chapter who you could contact for an evaluation. We found our local group to be very knowlegeable and helpful. Best Wishes, - > > Hi everyone! My name is and I have an eight month old baby > boy named Caleb. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group. I see you've already been given some great info on torticollis and Early Intervention. As far as the insurance, I'd just call them to see if they cover cranial orthosis. We also have an Insurance Database in our database section where you can search to see if anyone had the same type of insurance you have. You may want to look into the Bumbo Seat too, www.babybumboseat.com for a product that would allow him to sit supported without any further pressures on his head. Guest guest
Hi . It looks like you have already been given some grat advice and a good place to start. If you aren't sure your pede will take you seriously about the plagio, you might try printing out some of the info you find in out files and links section. That's what I did. I printed out a bunch of stuff to show my pede, although she took it seriously enough without the handouts. Let us know how it goes at the appt on Friday. Guest guest
Hi and welcome! I'm sure your question was already answered but I'll answer it anyway. See if your policy has a DME (durable medical eqpm't) rider. That is a good start. If you have any trouble with coverage please let us know. Many of us had to fight to win approval even with the rider. Hopefully you will have no trouble. GL on Friday and let us know. Guest guest
Thank you all so much for the info and the warm welcome! I will check into my insurance to find out what they will cover. Caleb is already in the early intervention program for our state. His scoliosis alone qualified him, but he also has some gross motor delays. We're not sure what's causing his delay as he's fine in all other areas. We don't know if it's his scoliosis or his eyes ( strabismus) or both that might be holding him back. He's been to the pediatric orthopedic doctor and we take him back in April to determine if his scoliosis has progressed. I'm not sure about the tort. Caleb seems to be able to turn his head from side to side without any problem. The early intervention physical therapist is coming tomorrow so I'll ask her about it. Thank you all so much! I hope Caleb's appt. with the pediatrician goes well. It's still common to get concerns brushed off, so it may help to be direct with your pediatrician about getting a prescription for a band, or referral to a specialist for evaluation if that's what you want. At 8 months old, Caleb is on the older side of any " wait, reposition, and see advice. " Please post and let us know how the appt. goes! My baby is 8 mo. old and she is getting her DOC band on Monday 1/24/05.I would say that she has the same head shape like your little boy. A flat spot on the back of her head, and her ears are slightly misaligned. We have Oxford Health Ins. and we were denied for caverage. So I send Appeal to them and just today found out they have approved us for DOC band. I would check with babies Dr. if they think he should need helmet... if he needs one you should do something about it ASAP... If you have any feel free to post here... Guest guest
If you're not ready for meat yet, bone broth is a nice baby step - just get some marrow bones and simmer them in the crock pot for 24 hours or so with a little vinegar then use the stock in one of your soups, like with lentils, tomato paste, carrots and celery. You'll feed your bones and heal your GI and not even know the difference! For the cod liver oil, just be sure that it's got natural vitamins A & D, I heard some brands take out the natural A & D and replace them with the palmitate version!!!! There are a few brands that are recommended at the bottom of the article that's online at www.westonaprice.org. My first meat after about 10 years of being a vegetarian was a hot dog cooked in sauerkraut! I guess there was something in organ meats I needed! > > Hello I'm new here > I think maybe I was a with this group a year ago without > understanding what it's all about. > Anyway I was referred to Weston Price by a former vegetarian who told > me (a former vegetarian)that eating that way has been the cause of > health issues I am dealing with. Guest guest
I'll think about it. I'm serious, this is going to take some time to even contemplate any meat products. I come from a family of vegetarians who feel very sorry for the cow. Now I know it's a part of the cycle of life and we need to eat the cow, well I sort of know that. I'm digesting the idea right now. What do you mean about it helping my GI. Do you mean to tell me it will help my intestines? Seriously? I'm learning here. I actually have a veeery slow colon. So, maybe I will try to do what you suggested if it is supposed to heal that problem. This diet doesn't suggest eating like the Atkins does it? I'm hoping not. I know the animal fat is important. How much are we really trying to get in one day? I've been a big fan of lots of butter for frying my eggs and plenty of cream in my coffee and eat salmon a couple times a week and full fat yogurt. My fat intake for the past year has been definitely much higher that the standard recommendations. So, I've gotten over the fear of fat. Thanks, April Re: New Here If you're not ready for meat yet, bone broth is a nice baby step - just get some marrow bones and simmer them in the crock pot for 24 hours or so with a little vinegar then use the stock in one of your soups, like with lentils, tomato paste, carrots and celery. You'll feed your bones and heal your GI and not even know the difference! For the cod liver oil, just be sure that it's got natural vitamins A & D, I heard some brands take out the natural A & D and replace them with the palmitate version!!!! Guest guest
No, it's not like Atkins, though some low-carbers do write in. Actually Weston A. Price noticed that the Native Americans used to give the meat of the deer to the dogs, they were more interested in the organ meats, but the good news is that much of the good in the organ meats can also be found in raw dairy from grass-fed cows. I'm stuck on the bone broth right now because my son has cavities so I'm trying to boost the strength of his teeth, and a friend has deteriorating cartilage in her hip, and my kids have digestive problems! There's an article on the site www.westonaprice.org called " Broth is Beautiful " and it says that there are things in the broth that heal the small holes in the digestive system that allow undigested food to leak out, which causes food sensitivities. You can get those holes from many over the counter medications, as well as prescription ones and from vaccines like the MMR one, as well as from candida. Really, I guess if you're not ready for " cow " yet, you could get the fish bones to make broth with or just skip that bit for now and enjoy your butter and raw milk. I adore cows and want to help push the movement for pastured, organic bovine products so the cows are well-treated throughout their lives. Same for chickens - now that I have some, I cannot even think of buying anything that comes from a battery-cage or warehouse-type operation! My " hennies " roam the backyard eating bugs for me and giving me wonderful eggs with rich orange yolks. > > I'll think about it. Guest guest
I will read up on the Broth is Beautiful website. Since buying a book at this moment is not on my budget I am thinking of checking out the library. Would you suggest the Weston A. Price or the other one I saw Nourishing Traditions? I did see on the website the thumbs up on books but would like to hear people's personal preference here. I think having your own chickens running around sounds great. I am curious how to get the raw dairy in my area. We have Trader Joes about a half hour away. I'm actually in a very rural area in Northern CA. I wonder if there would be such thing as a Dairy where I could get the milk. I checked the grocery store and there was organic milk but not raw. Makes me want a cow too. Even though we live on 2 acres of land, it's all sloped. A cow would not get to stand straight at any time on our property. That doesn't sound very comfortable for a cow. My husband would just not understand if I told him I wanted to sell and buy level land so that we could have a cow. Last year we bought a juicer when I got into trying to go raw vegan which didn't last very long. I know he would just stare at me with disbelief if I talked about getting a cow and chickens. So, for now I better find a source. What has everyone in this group found as far as raw milk products?
