Guest guest
Hi Donna - I have taken Valtrex and am currently on Acyclovir. I usually herx for about 2 days before I start to feel better - body aches, chills mostly. I have tolerated both meds well - we are alternating them so my body doesn't acclimate to them. Good luck - Jennie Message: 19 Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2001 23:25:03 -0400 From: " Donna Pruitt " <donnap@...> Subject: antivirals Has anyone taken Famvir, Acyclovir, or both? What were the benefits, side effects, or if you took both, which one seemed to help more? I have very high RNaseL activity, so Cheney put me on Famvir. It seems to be totally wiping me out, with intolerable pain, headaches, exhaustion, listlessness and of course, my old familiar breathing difficulties. I assume it is a bad herx, as some of the pain is diminishing, and i'm starting to have night sweats and fevers (my reg temp is about 97.2F due to hypothyroid problems my other doc can't get a handle on) from late afternoon on. When I spoke with his office, he said I shouldn't be in that much pain (i.e., he didn't want me in that much pain), and suggested I switch to Acyclovir. I did not speak with him personally, but his office person said that he said something about different people reacting differently to different drugs, and it wasn't a so much that Acyclovir is a lesser or less potent drug. I have not tested positive for anything, but have had shingles in the past, as well as cold sores, sores in my nose (which my EI doc says is Herpes of some variety) and canker sores. The EI doc's allergy extracts include extract for herpes type viruses, and that has kept the canker sores and cold and nose sores at bay for over two years. So Cheney's going for a general cover for Herpes and will retest RNaseL in 30 days to see if there are any changes. I've never taken any antivirals before, and this herx with Famvir is similar to the herxes with everything else I have ever taken in its early stages, including Isoprinosine, although this is by far the most severe herx. (Assuming it is not an allergic reaction, but I think after 8 days if it was an allergic reaction it would continue to get worse, rather than change its pattern). Any ideas about these drugs? Thanks, Donna in NC __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Donna, Aciclovir, as it's now spelt, is an early antiviral effective against a number of Herpes group viral infections. It works by interfering with the viral replication process thereby reducing the viral load. It works best when used at the onset of Herpes group infections, such as Chicken Pox, Shingles, Cold Sores etc., but does not eliminate the viral material. However, it unlike earlier antiviral drugs it leaves healthy cells intact and therefore has a low level of toxicity. Generally, Aciclovir can be taken by most people without any problems provided there are no problems with the Kidneys. If so, caution must be used. Recently, Valaciclovir has been introduced as a Pro Drug of Aciclovir, that is it delivers Aciclovir more effectively. This means Valaciclovir can offer the same benefit as Aciclovir, but can achieve blood concentrations in oral tablet form that can only be achieved by Aciclovir using the Intravenous method. This means oral Valaciclovir is a cheaper more effective version of Aciclovir when presented as tablets. My own experiences of Antiviral drugs, that is Ribavirin and Isoprinosine, have shown that they prevent a relapse in my CFS, known as ME in the UK, but do not make my CFS any better even when used for several months. However, I have now discovered that my main problem is a chronic fungal infection that these drugs will not deal with, but what they do offer is a reduction on the immune load when dealing with acute viral infections and therefore indirectly help prevent my immune system from being deflected from its attempts to deal with the fungal problem. I hope the information helps answer your question. Best wishes, Andy Porter antivirals > Has anyone taken Famvir, Acyclovir, or both? Guest guest
Donna, I forgot to mention that Valaciclovir is a trade name used in the UK, whilst in the USA and Canada I believe the name Valtrex is used. There is no difference between the products other than the likes of Glaxo Kline using different names for the same product in different countries. It appears the Pharmaceutical companies like this approach since it would appear that they can charge higher prices at least in the UK. Guest guest
, If you look on the home page on the left hand side you'll see a box. In it, you can click on Files. One of the files you'll find is called " Viral Information and Resources " . This would be a good place to start if you're looking for answers regarding anything viral and autism: it contains information and links. One of the links you won't want to miss is to 's page. I will be updated the " Viral Information and Resources " page very soon to include information, particularly on the need to ramp up the natural antivirals slowly and the negative effects of the " healing regression " . Guest guest
> > Hi, I hope this doesn't sound too silly a question, but what exactly > are antivirals? Supplements and/or medications which help to eliminate viruses. There are several different types, and they work on the viruses in different ways. Valtrex is a medication that prevents the virus from replicating. ViraStop enzyme digests the cell wall of the virus, allowing your immune system [if it is working] or your anti-viral, to eliminate the virus. Olive leaf extract is a natural/herbal anti-viral. So is vitamin A and C. Lauricidin also works well. > would all kids benefit from being on them or are they a fix for > certain virus issues? I have read that Valtrex works only on herpes virus, but I don't know if that is true or not. High dose vitamin A protocol is very effective for measles virus. I have had great success using ViraStop and OLE, and now adding in Lauricidin. >> And if so, how do you know if your child has > virus issues. I gave my kids OLE a few winters ago, to prevent colds and flu. When I tried to remove it, they severely regressed. This is how I knew they were virus kids. You can request a viral panel, I know Dr. McCandless recommends Immunosciences Lab. >> Also are there any negatives to using them? As viruses are leaving the body [ " dying off " , altho viruses are not technically alive, so they don't technically die], it does tend to cause a LOT of yeast. Guest guest
My son did the premier Autism Panel of ISL too and low titers for measles, but since he was too low on vitamin A despite supplementation of CLO, we did a high Vitamin A protocol with great lasting benefits. So just because the titers don't show up in the test doesn't mean it isn't there. I assume that Virastop would be a really safe alternative as it is a enzyme. Guest guest
Meenakshi, I started my son on a viral protocol without running viral titres (or at least any that were of any use). It is obvious from his reaction that he has viral issues. This, in spite of the fact that he had almost none of the soft signs of viral problems (see viral file for that information and other stuff you might find useful). I also know there are people who have used a viral protocol in spite of the complete viral titres tests showing no high numbers and ahve had success. I personally think that using natural antivirals, like Virastop, in a way where you titrate up cautiously is something many parents of ASD kids should try. The more I read about viruses and our kids compromised immune systems, the more I believe that a good number of our kids have these problems. I would also encourage you, if you are considering a viral protocol, to be sure to use immune boosters, perhaps even in advance to prepare for it. As for Virastop, it will digest the protein sheath of any virus which has one, so it is not formulated for only one particular virus. I hope this helps, Anita > > Hi all, > > We recently did an autism panel testing through > Immunosciences lab. it shows that our son doesn't have > the measeles virus. Guest guest
It is another blood test (or series of blood tests). Lots of people use Immunosciences, but I had mine done through the hospital. We tested for CMV, EBV, Herpes 1 and 2, HHV6, measles, rubella, and probably some others that I can't think of. Hopefully others will round out the list. You can get a good idea if you go to the Immunosciences lab website and look at their test offerings. One (the Premier Autism Panel (?)) was put together on Dr. McCandless' request. To the extent this information is not 100% correct, I hope someone will jump in. But it should be enough to get you started. Also, Virastop would be benign, you could give it even if there are no current virus issues. >>Is the > antiviral like Virasop tailored to work on a > particular viral issue? Guest guest
The acyclovir really helped Ben when he broke out with shingles around his neck three years after his chickenpox vaccine, and had pneumonia at the same time. His speech articulation suddenly became clear and age-appropriate afterwards as if the latent chickenpox virus in his cranial nerves had been affecting him all that time. Peace, Kathy E. Not necesarily will keep down then, it returns to 1:320 after while. For my girl is not so easy to fight HHV6, she got Rosseolla when she was 2 moths age, so i guess her immune system got used to this virus. The third time in Famvir he increased the dose, i really scared this time with the die off. Guest guest
When I was tested for viruses, these came up: Herpes1, 6, EBV and parvo. My fibro doctor, Dr. Dantini, from Florida does phone consults and works with your regular physician. Check him out on the internet. I sent blood to labs and he prescirbed Valtrex or acyclovir (generic) and I was on it for a year. It really helped lower my levels. I took 1 mg 3 times daily with Zantac to buffer the stomach. It really helps. Whenever I feel a virus overload (my throat glands get sore and swollen) I take 1-2 gm per day for a couple of days and I'm good to go again. in La Selva Beach CA On 9/19/2010 10:19 AM, sb2boys wrote: > > I have Herpes I and II, Epstein Barr and CMV.
