Andi, basically Chron's and UC has the same medication

regime. Surgical removal of the colon is only a cure

for UC because Chron's will appear in other parts of

your digestive track, whereas UC only affects the

colon. Usually the treatment is medication and if

developments persist, such as blockages or severe

bleeding or the likes, then surgical resection of the

small or large intestine is done, but they try not to

take too much as Chron's usually comes back in other

areas. With too much taken, it creates the short

bowel syndrome.

I do know a few Chron's patients who did have their

colon removed and a jpouch created, but it was only

because at the time they were dx'd with UC, and only

after the surgery and a recurrence in the small bowel,

did the dx of Chron's come up.

The most common treatment is prednisone, especially

during a major flare up. Asacol, Imuran or Azulfadine

is also a staple drug for treatment of UC and Chron's.

I am not sure what Pentasa is as I don't think I ever

took it. I do remember having some steroidal enemas

that I had to administer myself...which is a acrobatic trick.

(Hunter tribe) - I was on a trial for Pentasa 10 years ago or so -

didn't work as well for me as sulfasalazine. It's sort of like Contac -

time release " beads " within a capsule. You can see them quite well in a

colonoscopy (if you're awake).

Cortenema (steroid retention enema) only works if you have the distal (near

rectum) type of ulcerative colitis. It is pretty effective, as long as the

colitis isn't extremely active. It is absorbed, if you can last that long.

I never had a problem with them, if taken in the evening before bed.
