Guest guest
I would love to hear what Dr G's comments are on this as well. Austim according Stop Calling It Autism! (SCIA) Hello all, Below is a link to a new page just created at the Stop Calling It Autism! website. It describes the science SCIA believes in and helps explain most of the medical, cognitive and behavioral problems that children with autism suffer from. This is the same science that helped my son improve from a severely autistic child to a child that is doing as well as any child that never suffered from autism. is doing so well that we were able to take him off many of the medications he was taking including Tenex, Paxil and Diflucan. How did we do that? By inhibiting microglial activation as suggested as a possible treatment for mental illnesses by the Nobel Prize-winning University of Utah geneticist Capecchi in his recent study. Nobel winner ties mental illness to immune defect http://tinyurl.com/373k5mr It doesn't matter if you treat the infections that activated the microglial cells in the first place; the microglial cells will remain active for years after the infections have been treated. That is the reason of why many children that are being treated for infections don't improve like doctors and the parents expect. Many people ask me how I was able to inhibit my son 's microglial activation. I did it by using Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. Many research studies have proposed the use of NSAIDs as a possible treatment to target the microglia. The problem is that currently, there are no doctors that will risk prescribing the dose that needs to be given for it to be able to inhibit the microglial activation. That is why I decided to form Stop Calling It Autism! If we can provide large amounts of evidence that children with autism suffer from immune system dysfunction and microglial activation maybe we could expedite the development of medications that can target the microglia and be safe at the same time. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Brain Inflammation: Effects on Microglial Functions http://www.mdpi.com/1424-8247/3/6/1949/pdf SCIA is working very hard and it is in the final medical approval stage for a nationwide medical disease registry that will provide evidence that children with autism suffer from immune system dysfunction and microglial activation. Guest guest
Kay, I learned about the microglial activation by doing medical research and by coincidence as well. There are biomarkers for it, SCIA is working with researchers around the globe to put together a lab test panel that will test for immune system dysfunction and microglial activation. The lab test panel will be available as part of the medical study we want parents nationwide to enroll their children in. Once the medical study is launched, parents will be able to learn everything about it at the SCIA's website. They will also be able to enroll their children at the SCIA's website using a computer system that we are building that will help parents and SCIA manage the study participants and the study data electronically. Guest guest
, I respectfully but completely disagree with telling parents to do a high dose of NSAIDS (especially if many of them have gut issues) when you are not their doctor. The reason why alleviating these co-infections isnt deactivating the microglia is because not all triggers are being addressed. For example, if a child has allergies, chemical sensitivities, microbial translocation, and especially a retrovirus (ie XMRV?) These children need these issues treated. NSAIDS are an adjunct therapy, not a principal one. We need to find out what infections and inflammatory triggers are happening in our children. NSAIDS are a short=term help, they are not long term drugs. -Jen > > > > , > > How did you know about Glial activation? Guest guest
Hi Karla, Back in 2007, when my son's autistic symptoms were very severe, he developed a chronic bacterial and viral infection that kept him with a high fever for 7 days straight. During that time, the only way I was able to keep his fever down was with children's Motrin. The interesting thing was that during that time, even though he was extremely sick that he could talk a few more words than usual and that he was a little bit more alert. I had no idea at the time what was happening. didn't eat anything during the time he was sick. After the 6th day of me giving the Motrin three times per day, he started developing stomach pain. We took him to the doctor and the doctor said he was ok. At the 7th day he was grabbing his stomach in pain and he started coughing blood clots the size a bit smaller to coffee grains. At that time I took him to the emergency room. He was hospitalized for two days. The doctors told me that the reason of why he develop the stomach pain and bleeding was because the Children's Motrin was administered with empty stomach and it caused stomach bleeding. They also told me that Motrin was a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Once he got better I took him to Dr. Uszler in California for a scheduled brain SPECT scan. Dr. Uszler told me that suffered from neuroinflammation. Once Dr. Uszler said that a bulb in my brain lighted up and I was able to recognize the relationship between the NSAIDs and neuroinflammation. That is what sparked my medical research. Now, how did I find out the right dose? That is a very good question and still today I feel that there was Divine Intervention involved in all this. I read a medical study in which they were researching the effects of NSAIDs on inflammation. I read the article wrong and gave a dose different to the one in the article. That mistake was the best mistake I have made in my life. Any dose, other than the one I gave my son and it would not have worked. Everything else that the pediatrician and the two immunologists were doing for my son was right, but what they were missing was treating the microglial activation which the NSAIDs helped with. Guest guest
Dr. Goldberg is completely opposed to the use of NSAIDs the way I did it with my son. I had to combine Dr. Goldberg's and other two immunologists treatments with my own which was the NSAIDs. The other immunologists were making sure that was doing ok even though they refused to prescribe the Ibuprofen. Thanks, > > Does Dr. Goldberg use these non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs or did you have to combine his treatment with your own? > Thank you, > Colleen >
Guest guest
Dr. G has never prescribed or recommended NSAIDS for anything except as a short term remedy for fever and pain; knowing him as well as I do, I can't imagine that he would prescribe them for any kind of long-term therapy in children. The side-effects of long-term use of NSAIDS (gastro-intestinal bleeding, etc.) are well known. I would also be interested in his comments on this. Guest guest
I do more than agree. I believe that recommending unapproved over dosage and off label over the counter medications is extremely irresponsible. Just because you put your child at risk does not allow you to recommend that other children that may or may not suffer from similar issues can survive this. We all understand that each and every child is affected by Autism differently and what worked for you may well kill another child. You openly admit your use of Ibuprofen hospitalized your son, What were ypu thinking and how do you qualify it had a positive effect over everything else that was happening! You should put away you ego and stop tauting a none existent medical degree when you have no clue as to who is reading your posts or what you are recommending will do to their kid! ________________________________ From: " JOSKAT95@... Guest guest
Kathy, Read the following webpage that SCIA put together and remember that you read it from SCIA first. Autism according to SCIA http://www.stopcallingitautism.org/autism.html You are missing a very important point in your practice if you don't target the microglia in your patients with autism. Parents and their children deserve better and that is what SCIA will continue to provide them. Did you know that the microglial cells stay activated for years after antiviral treatment? If you didn't, you heard it from SCIA first. If you did, can you tell the parents and everybody in this list what you are doing to address the problem? The article in the " According To SCIA " webpage is based on research made by renowned researchers including the Nobel Prize Winning Capecchi and the s Hopkins School of Medicine. Articles like these ones and the many to come will help health care professionals that have autism practices like yours help their patients better. It will also help parents find the answers they have been looking for. Happy Holidays, Stop Calling It Autism! > > > > > > , > > > How did you know about Glial activation? Guest guest
I disagree, . This is a list for discussing treatments and parents who are sincerely wanting to learn about would be greatly confused by 's posts about seeing Dr Goldberg and yet going against his recommendations. There are plenty of other lists to discuss other modes of treatments. Respectfully, Jen > > > > > > > > , > > > > How did you know about Glial activation? Guest guest
I almost never comment on this list anymore (a long-timer that goes back 13 yrs with Goldberg), but I find 's representations difficult to ignore. To recommend to someone to contact SCIA for a prescription is irresponsible and to represent that the SCIA medical registry is scientifically credible is in poor judgement and misleading. I do not see any medical board behind SCIA and if all it is is and his wife, than what is it really? Despite the best of intentions, all of this medical jargon is too much for a non-MD to be putting out there without a medical board vetting it. , I respect the progress you have made with (congrats!), but you need to be careful on how you present yourself to this list and other interested parties. You are going too far. You are a parent with a success story, not a credentialed professional (unless I am mistaken). Just a friendly piece of advice. In a message dated 12/30/2010 7:26:57 P.M. Guest guest
Hi . I will be bringing the write up(the pharmaceutical review) to my sons physician as a possible solution to some of his problems. I have tried almost everything (treatment protocols) over the 11 years of his illness, and you have given me some hope. Thank you very much for your posts. Guest guest
Dear : I respecfully have to say, that I admire 's courage to write his message in this group and others, knowing the resistance some people in this group may have. Still is more admirable standing for what he knows got his son better and trying to help others that have the same situtaion to help their kids. Still, he posts in this group knowing that parents like me will be interested in knowing what is out there that can get our kids better. Please read carefully his message, I read it many times and I could not find anyplace where was prescribing a drug to anyone. Research about microglial activation and the links with Autism is extensive. Use of NSAID to treat microglial activation is not new, there is a lot of info out there to read and learn. is sharing what he knows and showing the living proof that it worked for his son. Years ago, Autism was believed not to be treatable. Today, the story is different, thanks to people that thought different and stood up for what was right and wanted to help others. Guest guest
Hi ,  Thank you for sharing. This is amazing. I keep hearing over and over again that the best cures or treatments are found by mistake. I want to make that same mistake too and keep praying and hoping that I do. But, I'm still waiting. Congratulations for making the mistake.  Karla > > > From: <jrodrig6605@...> > Subject: Austim according Stop Calling It Autism! > > Nobel winner ties mental illness to immune defect > http://tinyurl.com/373k5mr > > It doesn't matter if you treat the infections that activated the microglial cells in the first place; the microglial cells will remain active for years after the infections have been treated. Guest guest
, can you send us the article that you read on NSAIDs and neuroinflammation? Would sencirely appreciate it.  Karla > > > From: <jrodrig6605@...> > Subject: Austim according Stop Calling It Autism! > > Nobel winner ties mental illness to immune defect > http://tinyurl.com/373k5mr > > It doesn't matter if you treat the infections that activated the microglial cells in the first place; the microglial cells will remain active for years after the infections have been treated. Guest guest
Why are you all so hard on and his posts. He is just like any other parent telling us what worked for him and his son. He is sharing information. He is not forcing us to do what he did. I don't get it. It almost sounds like a personal thing toward him, like a dislike. If you dislike him, keep it to yourself instead of influencing others. Sorry, I'm new and neutral to all of this but it is so obvious that you have something against him. I do not get what it is. He is only sharing what worked for him just like many other parents have done so in this list and I don't hear you attacking those parents.  What is this? If I'm completely off base, help me understand please.  Thanks  Karla From: Bill klimas <klimas_bill@...> Subject: Re: Re: Austim according Stop Calling It Autism! (SCIA) Date: Thursday, December 30, 2010, 1:14 PM  I do more than agree. Guest guest
Hi Jen,  Let me ask you so that I don't violate any implied policies: I'm following the protocol, if beside the protocol, I happen to discover something that greatly helped my son, you wouldn't want me to post it in this list and share it with all parents? What do you think parents on this list answer to this question? Don't you think they would like to know?  Thanks for your reply  Karla From: <jlhank80@...> Subject: Re: Austim according Stop Calling It Autism! Guest guest
Hello , I think you have not read the information from the page below. Autism According to SCIA http://www.stopcallingitautism.org/autism.html Asking parents to get their MDs to contact SCIA for advice it is a great idea, because that way we make sure that children get professional help. By the way, something we have in our plans at SCIA is to train doctors all over the country in how to treat children with autism based on the correct science. Science based on work from brilliant MDs and researchers including the Nobel Prize Winner Capecchi. This is something that we all know it is desperately needed and for some reason I find very disturbing that you can take your child to only three places in the USA when there are so many children needing help. Why doesn't Dr. Goldberg, Kathy on and Dr. Bruce go to autism conferences to share the knowledge even though I think it is incomplete, but can help many children? Why hasn't been taught to doctors all over the United States in order to help so many children with autism? You know the answer to that question because you have been around for long enough. At SCIA we will give parents and MDs around the country the tools need to treat children with autism better and without guessing anymore. And at the same time we will provide the evidence is needed for many families to be able to get the help they need and hopefully get the right medications developed. We are not sitting around waiting for another 17 years to go by and not find help for children with autism. We are looking for help for all of them NOW! When you say a non-MD was able to get his son the way I got it says a lot about my character. I could just go away and do nothing, because my son is doing so much better. Instead you will hear from me and SCIA for a long time to come, because we won't stop until every kid with autism receives the medical help they need and deserve. This is a non-MD that has done what many MDs haven't. I have many MDs that have contacted me desperately asking for help for their children. I have had these MDs sitting down in my house having a cup of coffee listening to me explain to them what autism really is. I will share my knowledge with everybody that needs it. That is mine and SCIA's goal. We will not rest until everybody understands what autism is. If you don't agree with what we have been trying to do, so be it, you are not the first one and you won't be the last one. Don't forget to read the following page. You can learn a lot from it. Guest guest
I have seen provide some interesting information to the list & his efforts to share what worked for him to others is admirable. I have also noticed that most of his responses (like the one below) are to point parents to his website and/or suggestions to enroll in some research that his organization is working on & potential benefits of what he is developing for parents - something I think he ought to be transparent about with parents already going through a lot. Is his intentions just information sharing of what worked for him or recruiting candidates for his research etc or other. ________________________________ From: <jlhank80@...> Sent: Wed, December 29, 2010 1:23:21 PM Subject: Re: Austim according Stop Calling It Autism! (SCIA) , I respectfully but completely disagree with telling parents to do a high dose of NSAIDS (especially if many of them have gut issues) when you are not their doctor.
