Guest guest
> Happy Christmas to everyone - for the first time I've organised our family Christmas Dinner down on our beautiful local beach. Miles of beautiful sand, driftwood and shells. Bought extra chilly bins to hold all the food and pavs. Sun umbrellas ready to go, I've glued tinsel all around the edges. I'm going to arm wrestle my husband into playing Santa emerging from the surf. He thinks Im going over the top but so what. Actually Santa emerging from the sea may not be such a great idea as he will have to wear a lifejacket. Ill have to think more on this one. > > God bless you all > love Jan (NZ) Jan, What a fun party you will have! May I come? I would love some warm sunshine on my face right about now. I can picture the whole party from your description. Have a GREAT time! It was chilly here all day. We will definitely have a white Christmas, so Santa will have to come on his sleigh, snowboard, or skiis and not from the surf. I just got my recent lab results. My Christmas gift was a report of all normal reading except my SGOT's and that was only three points from normal. Yea! It appears that the increase in prednisone is doing the trick. Loes, I wanted to tell you earlier that your little girl is a sweetheart. I hope she is feeling better now so you can all enjoy the holiday. Tony, it is so good to have you back. I sent you a card by snail mail as well. May 2003 bring you many blessings. Dave, sorry to hear about your kidney cancer. As bleak as things appear now, it may be a blessing that the cancer is in the kidney and nowhere else. I have several friends who had kidney cancer and are doing very well with only one kidney. Any cancer is devastating, but this one may be one that can be dealt with quickly and effectively. Merry Christmas everyone, (in Wyoming)

Guest guest
- Pavolova, the traditional New Zealand dessert. A huge meringue, crisp on the outside with melt in the mouth marshmellow inside, topped with whipped cream, then kiwifruit, strawberries or blueberries, with chocolate grated over the top. (its the diameter approx of a large dinner plate with about five or six inch depth. Actually after writing this, I dont know whether Ill be able to eat any, I feel nauseas already!! Guest guest
---Hi Helen, Hope Nick is feeling better. His story made me laugh as my 10 year old was questioning Santa last year. Unbeknownst to me he had asked Santa to leave a sign to prove he was real. Well in the cleanup of wrapping paper etc... I managed to leave a Santa hat from somewhere near his presents. He got up at 5 am and woke me to show his proof. Sometimes Santa works in mysterious ways:) Hope the coming year is better for all of our kids. Guest guest
Hello All! I too hope everyone had a joyful holiday. Both my girls had a stomach virus but it allowed us, for once, to stay home and lounge around all day. left the funniest yet sweetest note to Santa. She left a list of things she wanted him to leave for her friends and myself. She wanted me to get a new refrigerator and an extreme back massager. She also asked him to bring her friends mother a new coat because she doesn't have money to buy a new one. At the top of the list she put another friends older brother. He likes to tease her. She wanted Santa to leave him: coal, coal, coal, coal, coal, coal, coal, coal, coal and some more coal. The last person on the list was her school principal. She was to also get coal, coal, coal, coal, coal, coal and some more coal. Kids, gotta love them! Here's to a brand new pain free year for all our JRA children! and 9 (poly JRA)

But i must share with you the story of the jingle bell, on the evening of the 23rd as Nick lay moaning on the sofa he whispered to me that he would be the best little boy on Xmas and all he wanted from Santa was a jingle bell from the sleigh. I managed to find a bell on Christmas eve and as we lay out Santas gifts and the stockings, i lay the bell on top of Nicks. You should have seen his face when he saw it, we all pretended we had forgotten he asked for one. But Nick was just in awe, the smile was priceless and he kept repeating, santa knows you know. nick has been questioning the whole " is santa real " this year, but he came up to me and said that he just knew santa was real and this proves it!!!!! We watched the Polar express today and thats where this whole jingle bell thing comes from i found out, i have never read the book, but Nick did last week in school and now i know why he asked for it. We went out to the movies too. My in laws/out laws have done this for years. I think it just might be a new tradition for us. We saw Fun with Dick and Jane. Take care. Guest guest
Carol, last Christmas I wasn't driving yet, so I shopped online and my husband drove us to my parents' for our family celebration. I'm not typical in that we don't have kids and my husband is from Israel and doesn't give a hoot for Christmas. I used to decorate when I had piano students coming in, but I get no positive reinforcement for it any more so I figure I'm doing well if i get the house clean and light the menorah. I buy for the relatives we'll see and cook something and that's about it. If you're shortly out of major spine surgery, or majorly in need of it, good heavens, nobody expects you to do much, or shouldn't, and there's really no law you have to. At least that's Green's Theory of Scoli Christmas, and I'm sticking with it. Sharon [ ] Christmas How are (and did) some of you fair for your first Christmas post-op? I'm having alot of pain down my rt. leg from bending and moving to get the decorations going. I'm going to have to have my 17 yr. old daughter help me a lot. I didn't think it would be this difficult. Now---shopping for Christmas? I can't even think about that yet!!! UGGGHHH!!!How do you do it all? Guest guest
Carol, I'm approaching my first Christmas post-op, but my advice from Thanksgiving and from just general disability stuff I've had in the past is to be sure to have help. I don't know if you have any friends or extended family who are still helping you (versus the impatient ones who think you've had plenty of time to recover), but if so, recruit them to help with the physical stuff - hauling boxes to decorate, going on a grocery shopping trip for you, cleaning up your house a bit, etc. It's really hard to ask for help, especially the first few times, but if it means the difference between you being able to enjoy the holidays versus you being stressed out or exhausted then it will be well worth the effort. And in my experience, unless you have that special helper who knows what needs to be done with being asked, it's best to become a leader and delegate tasks to people - " Hubby - I need you to <task>, Daughter - I need for you to <task>, and Friend - It would be a huge help if you could do <task> for me because my back has been extra sore lately and I don't want to push it. " Are you guys hosting a holiday dinner? As far as the Christmas present shopping goes - that's supposed to be the fun part So try to get people to help with the " boring " stuff so you can enjoy the good stuff! > > How are (and did) some of you fair for your first Christmas post-op? > I'm having alot of pain down my rt. leg from bending and moving to get > the decorations going. Guest guest
I am not planning to do any decorating. I asked my kids if they wanted to do it, and they both said they don't want to do it. One of my daughter's friends said she would come do the decorating for me, but I think we will go without decorations. I did buy a couple of small decorative items for my cubicle at work. Last year, I put a small ceramic lighted tree on the top of the roll top desk with the gifts on the desk under the tree. It works for me. > > How are (and did) some of you fair for your first Christmas post- op? > I'm having alot of pain down my rt. leg from bending and moving to get > the decorations going. Guest guest
I agree with Sharon! It's great to go to the mall! I went to a mall in October in Georgia for the first time. It was next to my husband's motel room. It had two levels and I was able to walk the whole thing. My ITB went into spasms but my back never bothered me! It is great to shop for hours again! Guest guest
Hi, . That was ne, not me. Wish I could say I love walking, but I really think I have fibromyalgia, now that I can't blame the leg pain on spinal nerve issues. Guest guest
Carol, Please don't stress about what doesn't get done this Christmas! No doubt your family are pleased to have a warm, loving, home to spend the holidays at. My advice....go the Epicurious.com site and find an interesting Christmas Dinner menu....then print out a recipe for each person/family to get who is coming for dinner. If you feel very much in need of being the " doer " , you can write the shopping list that goes with it...and tuck in the $$ to cover the expense. Give it in a nice Christas envelope to each attendee and watch the fun they get to have helping make something yummy. If the internet hasn't met your shopping needs this year, how about looking at the great crafting opportunites you can do in your own livingroom? I have to say one of my favorite gifts I gave...was the year I was 10 months post op. I went through my recipe book, and my mothers, and printed out and put together a " family cookbook " . I know if these recipes don't get " captured " they will disappear eventually! If you feel very creative you can make them kind of as a scrap book too...you know...putting photos of the grandmother the recipe came from on the same page. My family loved them. My husbands favorite gift recently was from his mom. She went through and sorted both son's pictures into albums, kind of a " story of my life, so far " . It really is neat to get a 40 year book...not just the baby years! The season is about love and sharing...not about what you buy! I am sure you can create that right at home, despite what the retailers want you to think. Over here in Denmark the whole thing is so much less commercial. The stores are still closed on Saturday at 1pm...can you believe it??!!! Take Care, Cam
