Guest guest
Thank you Sheryl, and Marcia for your feedback and encouragement. It helps to know that I can actually talk to others about my girl and you truly understand. I have friends that are very understanding and supportive but unless you are actually in our places there is not a " true understanding " of our struggles. Thanks so much! It is difficult to test kids when they lack communication skills and have little speech. I know when was young he appeared to just be weird and not anything like the very focused intelligent kid he is today. All the kids I have met, even the ones who exhibit very strange behaviors, are extremely smart and come from higher than normal intelligence parents. You see glimpses of it when you're their mom. Now you just have to get them better, so they can show the world who they really are. Best, Marcia
Guest guest
My son Noah was given an MR diagnosis by our Regional Center after the psych told me he couldn't test him accurately. One social worker at our medical group told me not to worry about it; they are giving a standardized test to a non-standard child. All of the teachers and paraprofessionals who've worked with Noah laugh when I tell them about the MR diagnosis. He is one smart cookie!! Guest guest
Â Robyn, The school psychologist and all of them we have taken Sydni to say she has such expressive language issues that they can not get much out of her. In her case her teachers do not portray her as a bright child. Her speech therapist tell me he believes there is alot in her that she is unable to tell us or express now he sees what I see. I hope she has a chance to improve so she can be a functional adult. I will not give up the hope. Thanks sharing! Guest guest
Don't rely on tests to measure you child's intelligence. On standardized test administered in a traditional fashion, my son scores an adaptive score or IQ of about 65. However, he is super smart. At 4, he has been reading for 3 years, has perfect written grammar, great spelling, can add and subtract, count money, knows the property of matter, all about astronomy, many, many things he knows are years above his peers. But he can't talk and has trouble answering a question from a stranger. He can only really answer questions at home, sitting quietly with a teacher or parent.
