Winter regression

I passed on the question from the list and asked Dr. Goldberg why so

many of our kids experience a regression towards the end of October or the

beginning of November. Here is his answer. I'm posting it to both the

and the Valtrex list because I thought it might be helpful to parents on

both lists.

Marcia et al

Winter regression (and in retrospect 's improvement here in Calif.) is a

combination of exposure to infectious agents (always higher in winter, more

indoor exposures - particularly Midwest and back east) and for some of the

children, more of a setup for infection by being in older building (mold,

mildew issues). Most children regress when ill (part of the whole immune

system tie-in). Obviously, IF children are harboring, not suppressing

fully the virus (viruses) they may be carrying, illness, anything which

stresses their immune system further, often will allow further flare up of

the child's own viruses (i.e. they will become worse).

While exercise, speeding up metabolism, adrenalism, etc. might help with

some components of an " infraction, " retrospectively it cannot and did not

prevent the pieces of immune stress occurring. Over the years, avoiding

stress, infractions has become more important than ever. (Note:

occasionally with sports - for some reason often skiing - a child will

really connect, brighten up)

Hope this helps,

MJG

Donna,

I sent the following to Dr. Goldberg. I will let you all know his answer.

On the list there has been some discussion about regression during the

winter months. I used to call it the Halloween slump because for us it

usually occurred after Halloween every year. Some of us have been talking

and think the correlation could be to the amount of exercise kids get in the

cold weather. Once we moved to California and was exercising all year

we no longer had the regression. Whenever ate an offending food, I

would increase the exercise and water. For him, he was always crystal clear

after swimming. I never understood why this happened. I just know it did

and this was my Dr. Mom solution. I can only imagine the speeding up of the

metabolism had this effect. Am I correct?

Best,

Marcia
