Guest guest
Carole, I don't know how often you are doing speech but once or twice a week is not enough. We were fortunate in that the speech teacher from the school district let me sit in on the sessions when she worked with . She was not trained in ABA, but did it naturally. She found what motivated him and rewarded it. She did most things in a game form. Unfortunately we were only given one session a week. So I would borrow her materials like picture cards etc and work with him daily. We only had one ABA person a week who was a college student I trained and she came about three times a week for an hour or two. I would show her what the speech teacher was working on and she continued it. We also worked on speech when we were in the swings at the park or going down the grocery aisles. The hard part is to keep talking to a kid who doesn't respond, smile at you or give any indication that they understand what you are saying. But they do. It takes three years to develop language in a normal child and ours are ill, so it sometimes takes longer. This is not an uphill climb but rather ten steps forward and two steps back. It is difficult to watch when you see them going backwards but try to notice all they have gained to keep yourself moving forward. Make sure your doc knows what you told us about here. Your grandson is so lucky to have a grandmother who loves him unconditionally and is so involved in his care. Please call me if I can help. Where are you located?
