Guest guest
Hey , I just saw your post & didn't notice it having been answered... Yes, you can wash off the blue dye, then crush and dissolve the pill. Takes a little stirring but it will. I wonder if a compounding pharmacy would be cheaper if they just gave you the easy-to-suspend/disolve powder in a capsule? I'd just crush it though. How old is your child? Can she swallow small solids? If at all humanly possible, I'd teach her to swallow the pills asap. My youngest was 2 when I " taught " him to. I actually didn't teach them - just told them once they learned to put pills straight into their tummy (after he asked what I was doing, watching me swallowing my pills), they wouldn't have to taste yucky meds.  Big brother (3 not yet 4) promptly picked his us pills (cut washed & ready to crush) and swallowed it ... " like this? " . I freaked out and so little 2 yr old brother did the same. Now they take all their pills at once - better than I ever could. I could barely swallow a tylenol till I was in my late 20s lol. HTH, but if not an option, I'm certain you can disolve it yourself. ________________________________ From: brd5 <brd5@...> Sent: Wed, October 20, 2010 11:57:23 AM Subject: crushing/dissolving valtrex pill  (sorry if this is a faq, I tried to use the search feature, but always gives me a server busy msg) Hey all. Dr. R prescribed valtrex for our daughter. She has a g-button and so the first time we had it filled, he wrote it as a suspension. Well, turns out our insurance won't cover it as a suspension, so we had to pay $130. That was after we found a pharmacy that could even do it. Our usual pharmacy that has compounded everything for us for the last 2 years couldn't even do it because they " didn't have a recipe " . I also tried a walgreens that compounds, but they wanted $218. Anyway, we're going to try just getting the pills and crushing them ourselves. Dr. R said he's had good luck then sprinkling the powder in applesauce, yogurt, etc. This might work, but I'm also thinking we could just mix it with 15cc of water and push it with a syringe. I've mixed meds that came as a powder, like nexium, but we haven't crushed our own yet. Has anyone here done this? Is valtrex soluble once you get the coating off? Thanks! Ft.
