herpesviruses like HHV-6 are gifts that keep on giving...for life. The problem

is they are reactivated in our children because of their dysfunctional immune

systems.

typically take for the virus to go away? I don't want my son on meds for too

long. I'm starting antifungals too and how long does that typically take to go

away?

Not necessarily have to be on antivirals for life, but the virus will be there

for life.

Antivirals (at treatment doses, not suppressive doses) can help the immune

system suppress them, so while it's so dysfunctional in our kids, it is

helping.  (Some of the antivirals are even showing suppression of XMRV - a

possible cause of the dysfunction they're studying.)

If the immune system can normalize, and Natural Killer cells increase (if

they're low - many of us have very low NKs) into a normal range (which often

happens in that 2nd year of antivirals), and all immune triggers have been

removed, and your child's immune system can start functioning, then yes, it's

possible to stop antivirals.  We were at a point w/Dr G where he was

considering

stopping them on my oldest son before we were forced to stop for $ reasons.

Now

he's back on them, and I don't really know if he truly needs them, but best to

be safe for now.

You do need to expect at least a 2 year committment to them, though.  You do

not

want to start and stop antivirals, and you definitely don't want them

under-dosed.  The viruses that have the potential to modulate the immune system

are also able to rapidly create resistance to a med if you stop and start.

Same

with antifungals, which have to be cycled periodically and dosed higher than the

typical 10 day treatment periods you see for a typical case of thrush or

something.  You have to look at these kids the way infectious disease doctors

look at their AIDS patients - that this is something that is going to last a

while, and we have to do everything we can to suppress infections that are going

to do negative things to the immune system, while at the same time not creating

resistant pathogens.  That's why Dr G is so picky about his antibiotic choices,

doses of antivirals and antifungals, etc.

HTH,
