Guest guest
Hi Tammy. I hope you can find some support on the group. There are a number of other mothers here who have a child with IgAN, and I'm sure some will read your message and reply to you. I don't think anyone can truly answer your questions about fish oil and tonsillectomy - because not even the experts really know, even after many, many studies, and many years. Based on those, it's just as easy to say that they might help, as it is to say that they might not. One thing we do know is that childhood IgAN is often not as bad as it appears, and prednisone certainly does help if there is a lot of protein in the urine - so, there is hope. Is your son being followed by a pediatric nephrologist? I hope Braden is not feeling too badly, right now. I'm sure you will hear how others kid's are being treated for this. Glad you found us. Guest guest
Hi Tammy A warm welcome to the group. I am sorry to hear of Braden's health problems. Fish oil and tonsillectomy have provoked much discussion within this group (see in the archives section). Personally there is no medical evidence as yet (though some sites do promote it!), that this does actually have any benefit, and I for one stopped taking my fish oil many months ago. Diets have also been very well discussed within this group, but I would add that you should never embark on any sort of diet without prior consultation with your doctors (I am not saying you wouldn't of course), particularly given Braden's allergies and other problem. There are a few moms and dads in the group with children with IGAN, and I am sure that they will respond to your message. A healthy lifestyle can only help of course, and combine that with good family and medical support, can make quite a difference. I hope Braden is feeling ok at the moment, and if you have any further questions please do ask away. Best wishes my son hello, my name is tammy I have a five year old son named Braden that was recently dx via biopsy for iga. I have read a lot of info on the net but i am not sure what to believe. Does fish oil help in small children? tonsillectomy? low protein diet? My son also has severe food allergies, I have seen a few refrences to allergies but nothing concret, does anyone know anything about it? Also my son had a rare immune disease named Kawasaki's as a infant, has anyone else had other immune disorders? I am very confused and sad about this dx i could use a friend also going through it. Thanks for your time and help. Tammy
Guest guest
Tammy, My son Matt has had IGAN for 5 years now, he is now 18 and his creatinne level is .9, he takes 10 fish oil capsules a nite and is on 25 mg of cozaar per day. His doctor said tonsillectomy will not be effective and that Matt does not have to eat a low protein diet. We try to keep his immune system healthy with low sugar, lots of veggies, alot of sleep, no caffiene. I agree with you it is very confusing. But, we need to try to be strong and have a hopeful outlook for our children. I pray often for my son's health! Guest guest
My son was diagnosed when he was 13. His nephrologists felt tonsillectomy was justified only with a history of frequent strep throat, which he did not have. Also they were reluctant to recommend a low protein diet until he quit growing, unless kidney failure became drastic before that which fortunately it didn¹t. Fish oil did seem to help him, at least for a while, but eventually the decline in kidney function occurred anyway. So I would agree with some of the other responses eat healthy and find a neph whose advice you trust. Good luck! Guest guest
My son is 22 now. I donated a kidney to him last July, and he¹s doing very well. He will graduate from college in May with a degree in physics. I had really dreaded ESRD for him, and we had hoped and prayed for the IgAN not to progress that far. However, although the gradual decline in kidney function was very difficult, the transplant has been the answer to our prayers (although at the time we didn¹t realize that was precisely what we were praying for). Guest guest
That is good sugar because it is natural and full of nutrients, this is information we received from the Nutrition Research Center where I took my son, to help with his IGAN. Refine sugar (white sugar) is no good for anyone, because there are no nutrients in it, they are stripped from the sugar cane in the process of making refine sugar. Corn syrup is no good either. my son > > > > > > > > > > > > > hello, my name is tammy I have a five year old son named > Braden > > > that > > > > > was recently dx via biopsy for iga. Guest guest
I would be interested in hearing more of your son's story if possible? My son's IgaN started at the age of 13 also, he is now 18 and looking ahead to college. Your story sounds encouraging for him. Did your son take prednisolne and if so what kind of an effect did it have on him? thank you so much! Helene Re: my son > > > My son was diagnosed when he was 13. Guest guest
My son was on prednisone for about a year right after his biopsy. The side effects, particularly at the high dosages, were really bad: lethargy, severe mood swings, ravenous appetite, and heavy acne. At first it did seem to reduce the amount of protein in his urine but then it gradually came back up again. By the time he was tapered off the prednisone, he was back to the protein level he started at. Then he started on 12 capsules of Omega3 fish oil a day and after about 6 months of that, his protein was down almost to the average range. (His creatinine level was still normal at that time.) However, very gradually the protein level rose again and at 18, serum creatinine began to rise. He developed the anemia of chronic renal failure early, when his kidney function was still at about 50%, probably due to the fact that he also has an hereditary mild anemia. So he started giving himself epo shots when he was a senior in high school. For the next year and a half, he was on a rollercoaster ride, with hemoglobin either way too low, with all the side effects of severe anemia, or too high, with blood pressure going way up as well. That made his senior year of high school and freshman year of college very difficult. Then his kidney function began to decline slowly and for some reason the anemia became easier to manage. Also in the middle of his freshman year of college, he tried Imuran for several months as a last-ditch effort to stop or slow the decline in kidney function. It didn¹t help at all and just made him really sick, sort of like chemotherapy. So by his sophomore year of college, he was only dealing with gradual kidney failure, which was probably slowed somewhat by the renal diet (restricting protein, potassium, phosphorus, and sodium). He is a very stoic person and really just didn¹t complain much at the time. He kept saying he felt OK, but in retrospect he says he forgot what OK really felt like, and now he wishes we had done the transplant sooner. He recovered very quickly and was back in school in 4 weeks and has felt enormously better since then. Good luck to you and your son - Betsy > I would be interested in hearing more of your son's story if possible? Guest guest
thank you very much! My son's Neph wants to do a biopsy and he is pretty sure he will be prescribing prednisone for him. That is if there is no scarring. My son and I both are reluctant to agree to the prednisone, his doctor said it may not help at all? Also,we are really concerned about the risk of the immune system being shut down while on prednisone. Re: my son > > > My son is 22 now. Guest guest
Dan, My 10-year old son started prednisone and Imuran and Vasotec a few months ago. So far, no side effects at all. His doctors had hoped that would be the case; they report having several patients who are doing prednisone every other day plus Imuran daily and thereby avoiding the side effects of the steroids. They tell me that's why they're using this particular " cocktail " now at this hospital. - Katisha
Guest guest
Tammy, I truly hope all goes well for your son. My 14 year old daughter had her kidney biopsy last week. She came through it very well, and other than some back pain around the wound, she is doing fine. The biopsy confirmed the IGA, and her neph said she had some scarring, though not much. He saw scars on 2 of the 12 glomeruli they were able to look at initially. We go back for a follow-up this week and will have to decide on a plan of attack. Her neph suggested prednisone and perhaps Imuran, although I am not yet sure of the dosage/frequency or duration of the treatment. I had mentioned earlier that we were told of recent data that suggests more aggressive treatment early leads to better a outcome later in life. One bright spot, her neph said 70% of the adolescents who develop IGA (those where it is actually diagnosed)go into " remission " when they get older. Not really sure what remission means from IGA standpoint. My daughter, like any 14 year old, doesn't want the weight gain, bloating and acne assoc. w/prednisone, although her neph assures her that with tight dietary control, the bloating can be greatly diminished. My wife and I are trying to consider the larger picture, i.e. her entire life and not just teenage years. Tammy, please keep the group informed as to Braden's progress, reading the posts here has calmed my nerves more than once. I am very grateful to Pierre for moderating this group, and Pierre, good luck with your dialysis. Parenting...its the toughest job you'll ever love.... Guest guest
Hi Dan, Hope your daughter will do well and go remission in the future. Does your daughter have any symptom, or just blood/protein in her urin? I've also learned that early aggressive treatment may benifit IgAN. But if there is no symptom, does it need to be treated? Are you referring to that Japanese article? Thanks, Fre > > hello, my name is tammy I have a five year old son named Braden > that > > was recently dx via biopsy for iga. Guest guest
--- Fre, I think he mentioned a recent article out of Britian or another European group that suggested this aggressive treatment. Whether this applies to all age groups of kids particularly I don't know. The only symptoms my daughter has are the hematuria and proteinuria, and the hematuria only when she catches a cold, flu bug or other URI type illness. Other than that she is fine, which makes it all the harder to convince her that we should treat rather than wait. Guest guest
Katisha, Thanks for the info. My daughter is on Vasotec for her BP already, and we might soon be on the " cocktail " you mentioned. Her neph assures her that with dietary discipline, she can mitigate many of the unpleasant side effects of the prednisone. I have tremendous confidence in her neph, he truly seems to be concerned for her and her future. Thanks for the encouragement, Dan > Dan, > My 10-year old son started prednisone and Imuran and Vasotec a few months > ago. So far, no side effects at all. Guest guest
Hi Ingrid, I think it is just the harsh thing, although there is much hype that a lot of caffeine in a well person, is bad for you. As my Neph likes to trip out 'everything in moderation young lady'!!! Seriously though I think it is just that is harsh on the kidneys. Aside the withdrawal symptoms early on, I don't miss full-caff drinks anyway, but as a treat it is wonderful!!!! Re: my son I didn't realize that it was bad in general. Is the caffeine processed by the kidneys then?? Or is it just a harsh thing?? > > > > > > > Tammy, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My son Matt has had IGAN for 5 years now, he is now 18 > and his > > > > > > creatinne > > > > > > > level is .9, he takes 10 fish oil capsules a nite and is > on 25 > > > > mg > > > > > > of cozaar > > > > > > > per day. Guest guest
I truly fear weaning myself off of caffinated coffee. I even work part time at a coffee shop just because I don't want to send the money on the coffee:) But you're right " everything in moderation " One more Q though. Are teas as 'harsh' (to use my utterly vague and unscientific terminology:) as coffee? I don't drink soda so that form is not an issue. Plus, chocolate has caffeine. Is that form as bad. Oh brother, and I thought I had already done myself plenty of adjusting:) Ice cream - one of my favorite things on earth to eat - is already a treat, so I guess more things will become treats. I guess that that is something to look forward to.
