Guest guest
On my pre-esrd renal diet (for people whose serum creatinine is > 300 umol/L or 3.5 mg/dl or thereabouts), tea and coffee are " free foods " , meaning that they don't count unless there are fluid restrictions, and if potassium-restricted, limit to coffee to one cup per day. Other than that, they don't seem to care whether it has caffeine or not. Soda, or soft drinks as we call them here, is fine, even encouraged as an energy-booster (helps to compensate for the low protein). Only dark colas are out due to phosphorus content. Chocolate has potassium, so limited if potassium is a problem. Ice cream is out due to phosphorus. Now, when I look at the long list of " foods to avoid " , I don't think I would want to bother too much avoiding things that are actually allowed : ) In fact, they even served coffee and tea at the renal lectures I attended. Guest guest
Hi Ingrid First off my comment 'everything in moderation young lady' was not a direction from me to you, this was what my Neph tells me ok, don't want you thinking I am some critical old bag LOL!!!! Tea was also given the thumbs down by my Neph, de-caff is fine though, and to be honest I cant taste the difference anyway, I can with coffee but not tea. Chocolate I rarely eat, due to diary allergies, but sometimes I just have to have some, cravings etc, but then I stick with white chocolate, for some reason it doesn't seem so bad then!!! Ice cream also out for me, but I do have a Vegan Ice Cream, which is just fine for me. I think if you use the 'treat' as a rule of thumb, your Neph would be happy, and you need not deprive yourself either. Have a chat with your Neph Ingrid, and get him or her to be more specific, that is what I did, so mine wrote a list of DON'T's food wise for me, and to be honest, they are only things that you would eliminate if you were on healthy eating regime. Re: my son I truly fear weaning myself off of caffinated coffee. I even work part time at a coffee shop just because I don't want to send the money on the coffee:) But you're right " everything in moderation " One more Q though. Are teas as 'harsh' (to use my utterly vague and unscientific terminology:) as coffee? I don't drink soda so that form is not an issue. Plus, chocolate has caffeine. Is that form as bad. Oh brother, and I thought I had already done myself plenty of adjusting:) Ice cream - one of my favorite things on earth to eat - is already a treat, so I guess more things will become treats. I guess that that is something to look forward to. Guest guest
KAren, I definitely took the 'young lady' comment as you had intended. Don't worry:) It takes a hell of a lot to ruffle my feathers and I doubt I would have been offended anyway, but thanks for checking. Part of the problem is that my neph is fabulously interested and carring, but has not interest in the food side of things. He says that I don't need to worry, and in reality I don't, BUT I do think getting a head start on a healthy diet and just being aware of what other people are saying and doing is always good. And I did talk to the dietician before doing anything at all. I'm being careful and my neph is keeping track of my albumin as I don't eat any meat and only rarely have fish. I think I need to bring it up with the dietician, but she'll jsut say the same as your neph - " moderation " . Well, at least I am getting good ideas for a healthy diet this way instead of just relying on general healthy diet suggestions. I find it strange though that white chocolate would be better. I think it tastes horrid and can't belive that it would be an adequate substitute - but then again, my family is filled with arguements as to the best type of chocolate - dark, light, white... Thanks for all the ideas. I like hearing what so many others are saying. And have a nice long weekend. At least it is one here in the States - I plan on sleeping mine away:) Ingrid > > > > > > > > > Tammy, > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My son Matt has had IGAN for 5 years now, he is now > 18 > > > and his > > > > > > > > creatinne > > > > > > > > > level is .9, he takes 10 fish oil capsules a nite and > > is > > > on 25 > > > > > > mg > > > > > > > > of cozaar > > > > > > > > > per day. Guest guest
Ingrid Phew that's alright then LOL, no ruffled feathers. The white chocolate being better for me, is my warped assumption, I know full well that chocolate is dairy, whether it be brown or pink with red spots on LOL. I am only trying to justify myself for eating what I shouldn't have LOL. If you have already spoken to a dietician and have been given the standard 'moderation' line, then I would simply adhere to that. I have so many restrictions due to allergies, that I now really enjoy what I can have. I would say at this point, that I do try to re-introduce things that previously upset me, like bananas, for years I have avoided them, because I came out in a puffy rash, lately I have discovered it is the flesh, not the fruit that irritates me, so I now eat them again, oh joy nana sandwiches!!!! Same with red meat, lamb really used to make me feel sick, but if I overcook it, like it is nearly charred, I am fine. Pork is ok too now, but Beef or Steaks forget it, unless they incinerated LOL!!!! How anyone like my husband could eat a steak rare, ugh, gross!!!!! I do have things I shouldn't Ingrid, simply because I am a bit of a madam, and do rebel, but my Neph knows what I get up to, he once caught me outside at the hospital, with a huge take out full on coffee and having a crafty cigarette!!! Well he berated me on the spot, made me stub out my ciggy, tip the coffee down the drain, and took me up to the waiting room, where I got more of the same, deservedly of course. Now 1 year on, I don't smoke at all (he threatened to stop seeing me if I didn't stop). He also said that he would know if I have been smoking or not, as he reckoned they could tell from my blood tests, whether this is true or not, I don't take the risk LOL. So I enjoy what I can have, plus the naughty but nice bits occasionally. Re: my son KAren, I definitely took the 'young lady' comment as you had intended. Guest guest
I heard that decaf can be dodgy depending on how the caffeine is removed. Drip filtered coffee is best, or you could investigate alternatives such as dandelion. Re: my son That is good sugar because it is natural and full of nutrients, this is information we received from the Nutrition Research Center where I took my son, to help with his IGAN. Refine sugar (white sugar) is no good for anyone, because there are no nutrients in it, they are stripped from the sugar cane in the process of making refine sugar. Corn syrup is no good either. my son > > > > > > > > > > > > > hello, my name is tammy I have a five year old son named > Braden > > > that > > > > > was recently dx via biopsy for iga. Guest guest
Thanks for the advise. My blood pressure is now under control. Re: my son My son's Neph told him to stay away from caffeine because it elevates blood pressure and for the sweet & low, I am not sure, we don't use it because it's mostly chemicals my son > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > hello, my name is tammy I have a five year old son named > > Braden > > > > that > > > > > > was recently dx via biopsy for iga.
