Hello everyone,

Just wondering, what do you all give your kids to drink? I'm trying to cut

as much sugar as I can and all my son will drink is juice. He currently

drinks hemp milk too, which I've just heard is against the diet. I've

tried giving him plain water, but he'll just refuse to drink at all and then

ends up constipating himself. Anyone have any suggestions or tips?

Thanks!

My kids just drink water (w/a rare treat of Gatoraide when they're nauseas or

had a stomach virus), but I've seen other people add crystal light (sp?) to get

their kids to drink water... I don't know if it's against the nids diet or if

you can find sugar free, but just wondered if that was an option.  Then there's

mocha powder we discussed recently - I bet that could be added to water...

Do you put ice in it?

Crystal Light is sugar-free, and, at least the last time I checked, it was Dr.

G-approved. My son absolutely HATES water and hates anything carbonated. He

will only drink juice, so I give him Crystal Light or diluted juice(1 part

juice, 3 parts water).

My son likes to drink goat milk. It does have a " goaty " taste to it however

that he does not like. To hide this, we add just 1 tsp of Vanilla Nesquik

to it. (The container says the regular serving is 3 heaping tsp which would

make it a very sweet drink.) My daughter loves Minute Maid Light

Lemonade. Of course they both drink a pretty good amount of water too. My

daughter especially loves sucking on ice or eating snowcone ice. I bought a

snowcone maker for this at Target for under $20. No syrup. Sometimes I'll

pour a little bit of juice on top, but it's mostly just ice.

Good luck.

Hi ,

Marcia's advice is bang on regarding diluting the juice with water.

You may have to do it gradually over the course of a week or so and start by

just adding a bit of water and each time add more water to his juice. You

will know you added too much water if he wont drink it. Remember many kids

are very sensitive and can tell if we tamper with anything they consume. If

he gets constipated, add a teaspoon of mineral oil to the juice, water mix

and serve it cold. Over time, you will develop a water drinking child and

be able to save the precious 2 servings of fruit a day for actual pieces of

fruit where real fibre will also help the constipation.

Keep the fruit choices, whether for juice or eating, to non tropical fruit

such as apple or pear, if your child can tolerate them.

Also try and make water itself fun to drink by using a straw (silly ones are

extra fun if you can find them then make it a big deal to use ONLY with

water) or a super fun squirty type of bottle. Adding ice to it can also

make it more interesting to hear the rattling sound it makes as it is being

used.

Best of luck. It takes time but will definitely be worth it in the long

run.

So Dr. Goldberg is okay with goat milk? Also I typically do dilute his juice but

if I go any more diluted than half water/half juice he'll refuse to drink. The

crystal light sounds like a great idea but my son

has issues with citrus fruits. Anyone else's kids sensitive to citrus, but can

still drink crystal light? What about caffeine-free teas sweetened with

saccharin or similar? Is something like that okay on the diet?

Thank you for all of your ideas. :)
