Hi everyone,

Every once in a while when my son gets a cold and is congested, he starts to

limp. When he was 17 months old he had this happen and they took x-rays and

found fluid in the hips. He is 4 now. I was told that when they get pneumonia

fluid goes to the lungs and in my sons case it was going to the hips. We took

him in yesterday and the pediatrician saw him limping and immediately sent us to

the hospital for x-rays and blood work. Just got the call that everything came

back normal. So just trying to figure this out. Has anyone else had this happen

to their child.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

This has happened to our son twice. He is also 4. We didn't take him to the

doctor the first time, but we did the second time and they found nothing. It's

very strange and actually scary when it happens. I also wonder what it could be?

Hi Kathy,

My son had synovitis on the hip twice, pretty close together.  It can be pretty

painful, the more fluid there is.  At one point, he couldn't walk for 3+ days,

&

even once he could, it hurt for another week.

I think the treatment was anti-inflammatories, although they may have also done

prophylactic antibiotics.  They should also have done blood work to rule out

bacterial infection.  If that were to happen, it can become serious - hence the

trip to the hospital.  So your doctor (orthopedic doctor) should be aware of

EVERY time he starts limping when sick.  Repeated inflammation could result

(very very rarely) in the hip joint or something being damaged in a way that

could cause growth problems or arthritis later.

But my son has done fine since, and he had a pretty bad case both times.

I wonder about Lymes Disease. Your joints just kill you- hips hurt the worst for

me.

Poor little guy.

One of y son's early symptoms Dr. G said pointed clearly to a viral problem

was him limping/dragging his left leg. About a year ago, we noticed it

returning mildly. Switching the antiviral stopped the problem. It would

make sense that a cold or other immune insult would reduce the body's ability

to fight off other chronic viruses it may be dealing with.

This just recently happened to my son and i attributed it to his poor gross

motor and a likely fall. I guess I should bring this up to Dr. G as this is

interesting.

My sons hips hurt a lot and he pushes on them all the time, rubs his

cramping legs and has restless legs. Dr G said it is all related.

He said if the hips get worse, we might need an x-ray. He is probably

talking about the fluid disorder was talking about? I'm guessing

this might be a prerequisite to limping? Jerri

Where is he pushing on his hips?

If you get an xray, that's likely what they'd be checking for (synovitis). With

more of the info you provided, it doesn't sound as much like it.  But that is

so

painful usually that the child won't even be able to put weight on it.  It is

usually a pretty abrupt onset too, I think, like no more than a couple of days.

In light of the hips AND cramping legs and restless legs, then that's

definitely more related, like Dr G said.  (Actually even synovitis is

immune related, just not neuro-immune.)   My other son (not the one that had

synovitis) has this very same problem, as did I for most of my first 30

years.   BUT it doesn't necessarily mean it's not treatable.  I went decades

with this pain & RLS - I usually limped and had sciatica and TMJ and hip pain

and muscle pain and pain and more pain.  (This was when I had my real 'healthy

diet', which certainly didn't help - if I eat whole grain due to lack of nothing

else to this day, my joints will hurt immediately.)

What stopped all this pain for me was when I had a car accident (rear-ended by a

truck that bent my little car in half) while I was pregnant w/my first son, and

because I was preggers, the worker's comp company cancelled my ortho appointment

and sent me to a D.O. (like an MD but more specialized in osteopathy I guess),

and he had a physiatrist - kind of a rare kind of therapist who can map nerves

and muscles and do these manipulative movements and stuff to make miracles.  I

went for the mild whiplash, and was afraid to mention anything at all about my

other chronic pain lest my worker's comp find some reason to not cover something

..  Anyway, as the physiatrist was doing his exam, he started pointing out all

the places I was in the most pain aside from whiplash!  It totally shocked me,

because I'd been going to docs so long without anyone finding anything or

believing me that I'd given up.  I hadn't sought care in years except to get

the

occasional Toradol shot when it became unbearable (my level of unbearable,

which

is about an 8).  Then I was given the fibromyalgia diagnosis and so then it

wasn't something treatable either (thought that explained why chiropractors made

it worse instead of better).  But here he is, pointing to and DESCRIBING the

pain I was having like he's a freakin' mind reader.  They treated me, taught me

special exercises to shift my hips into proper position, manipulated my muscles

& sprayed them with a freezing spray so they wouldn't seize right back into

position (some had hardened rock-like knots from lack of circulation).  Within

6

visits, I was almost pain free, and now when I hurt, I can go for just a couple

of fix-it sessions.  Physiatrists are beyond cool.

I'm trying to find a physiatrist that will do pediatrics for my son now,

because

he has the same problems, and when you see him stand w/out a shirt, you can see

his pelvis is tilted down and forward, which was a big part of my pain in the

hips and low back.  If I can't find one, I need to find a PT who knows how to

do

" pelvic corrections " .  If all else fails I'll see about a chiropractor.

For the leg cramps, Dr told us to use salt substitute (made w/potassium

instead of sodium)... that stuff rocks!  It really worked - just took a few

days.  Then he stopped eating the breakfast I used it in most and I forgot to

find a new food to put it in, and he started cramping again & demanded to know

why I wasn't using that salt anymore.  So he could tell a big difference.

For the restless legs, probiotics will set that off, as well as any bacterial

infection.  Doxycycline got rid of it for me, I don't remember which antibiotic

helped Garrett, but it did.  (I actually think it was minocycline - not an

antibiotic Dr G uses, but I suspect cefzil or keflex might work too.)   I

also

think the potassium made a difference, and maybe his effexor.  But 2 or 3

probiotics will have my legs restless in no time.  Oh - you can also try

Mucinex

DM (has to have the DM) - I've heard of that helping too, providing Dr G gives

approval, but that is OTC.

I give my son advil a couple of times a day for 3-4 days when he's really

hurting, & that will help him for a while.

Good luck, and I hope you can find someone.  If one doctor doesn't know how to

help, find another kind.  If one therapist can't help, talk to some others.

Even if it is causing inflammation, it can be treated.

A heating pad does wonders at bed time to help with the restless legs - that's

the only way he could get to sleep.  It wouldn't wake him up any once he made

it

to sleep.  (But really ... think bacterial problem.)

HTH

I have now heard of several kids that developed sudden limping and appearing to

have a mild loss of motor skills, including here locally, and they all seemed

associated with a viral illness. I just talked to another one of the

kids' mom here (there were 3)- he was in the hospital a few days trying to

figure out what was going on and it was finally determined to be a virus, and he

recovered from it completely with no apparent ill effects.

I wonder if some virus has gone around recently (but all over the country??)

that this is a common reaction to... very odd.  But 5 or 6 kids all in a

month?

And my son's synovitis developed after a virus the first time ... the second

time wasn't long after & just seemed like a relapse & didn't last as long.

(Except for the kid with leg cramps, pain in both hips, and rls - that's a

different pattern.)  If that's the case, and your kid has sudden limping, go

ahead and see the doctor, and if they can't walk on one leg at all, they need an

xray for certain.  But don't panic - odds are it will pass within a couple of

weeks if it's similar to what the kids around here are having.

Wow , thanks so much for that! I will try it all. His is on

kyodophilous which I thought was an okay probiotic. Should I try

removing it? I know I will try one thing at a time, so I know what

works. Thanks again for all of that, have not heard of a physiatrist

before. My son had a cranial sacral treatment a couple of weeks ago. It

really seemed to help him, she worked on him for 2 hours and used the

most powerful essential herbs I've ever smelled. She had one called

" peace and calm " that has us all yawning upstairs when she was working

on my son downstairs. Hardly anything gets me to yawn. We have another

appt. on Sun. We'll see if it helps again. She explained how she works

on connective tissue. I'm going to try a treatment too. My son was ill

at the time she came and he got better fast from it too. Thanks again, Jerri

My son did this 2-3 times over 2 years while on antiviral treatments....lasted

about 3-6 weeks. I think it is EBV.

I wonder if some virus has gone around recently (but all over the country??)

that this is a common reaction to... very odd. But 5 or 6 kids all in a month?

And my son's synovitis developed after a virus the first time ... the second

time wasn't long after & just seemed like a relapse & didn't last as long.

(Except for the kid with leg cramps, pain in both hips, and rls - that's a

different pattern.) If that's the case, and your kid has sudden limping, go

ahead and see the doctor, and if they can't walk on one leg at all, they need an

xray for certain. But don't panic - odds are it will pass within a couple of

weeks if it's similar to what the kids around here are having.

This just recently happened to my son and i attributed it to his poor gross

motor and a likely fall. I guess I should bring this up to Dr. G as this is

interesting.
