Guest guest
The difference and what pain docs want to avoid is percocet because you get the blast of drug, you get peaks and valleys, where as percocet you can get a high on oxy and ms contin you cant. The rush feeling you get you will not get with long acting drugs. If it takes away your pain be happy, if it doesnt talk to the doc. Research has shown that intractable pain patients do not get high from their pain medications as the word is used with drug addicts. It is a word that is misused. Pain patients might get drugged, sleepy, disorientated etc from strong doses but not high, feel better maybe. I believe the better words would be quick release, but never high. High is used for the people without pain who can obtain sometime of euphoria. I have never obtained an euphoria from my pain medication but just a cesstation of high pain levels. The following is from the Wipedia and insert:Oxycodone does not " hit " the central nervous system with the same immediate punch as heroin or morphine do and it does not last as long. OxyContin (the name is actually short for Oxycodone Continuous release) Binders (things added to the drugs) and the sustained release are some of the reasons to change. My doctor changed me from Kadian to Avinza. Avinza is thought to be a " smoother " release of morphine. So it was not because Kadian made my high, it was the Avinza is distributed differently, the Kadian released to soon for me and then did not cover pain for the time it stated. My Avinza does not last 24 hours and my doctor states 12 is what most patients state it lasts. I use the word drugs for my medications and I have found if I use the word medications it helps others realize it is medication not drugs as with addicts. I feel we sometimes do that with the word high when we mean something else. So my pain doctor who has been in the field for 30 years, states when he lectures new interns there is the misperception that pain patients can obtain a euphoria from their medications. He did a study of 300 patients and not one stated they ever got a high. I wish that I might have that sense of euphoria, but it has been many years and i am happy for a pain level of 3. Debra, I worked at -Jewish I miss it. I see you are in St Louis. I went to Jewish College of Nursing but that's been awhile. I miss the ice skating at Forest Park. Well, I just wanted to add my opinion, I know what you are saying but the word high is not something I would equate to the relief I get : ) I have been on all three medications you mentioned. Bennie. But I too agree that I do not know of anyone who has dealt with serious, continuousis pain that gets " high " from their medications. Relief maybe, but all too often relief isn't there, - just enough to function or move. I think that is true no matter what drug of choice is used. M .
