Can anyone tell me how someone is checked for ascites? I believe

that a swollen abdomen (I know that isn't spelled correctly, sorry)is

a symptom. Do the doctors usually go by symptoms for ascites or is

there a test that is done? Thank you!

Hi Nikki,

The drs can check for accepts which is fluid in the abdomen by feeling you tummy as they normally do in a physical examination. The see if there is something called 'shifting dullness' by tapping across and then getting you to turn slightly to one side see if the dull area has moved. If it moves then it is fluid around the abdominal organs or ascites. The fluid will also turn up if the person has a scan or x-ray although anyone with ascites will probably have swollen legs.

Nikki,

With severe ascites it becomes pretty obvious - the abdomen becomes

drum-like and when tapped to relieve the pressure many quarts of fluid

will come out. At moderate levels the presence of fluid can be

detected by rolling from one side to the other. The fluid which

accumulates on the low side (which upon rolling becomes the high side)

and can be seen as it flows to the new low side. With incipient

ascites, ultasound examination of the abdomen can detect small pockets

of fluid.

P.S. There is nothing wrong with your spelling that I can see.

Barbara,

Thanks for the information. The reason that I was asking is because

I had an ERCP done on Friday (30th) and ever since then, I have had

swelling in my abdomen. There has been a couple of nights where I

had to get up because it was so uncomfortable to lay there. The

swelling seems to be the worse in the evening hours. My ankles seem

to be a little puffy but nothing worth mentioning. If a person does

develope these things, what do the docs usually do about it, if

anything?
