Guest guest
Katrena, I know sort of what you went thru as we went thru the nursing home thing with my mother in law and now next week I head off to florida to do the same thing with my mother. Here in New York nursing homes first take private insurance or the people assets are used to pay for then until they run out. Then Medicaid takes over. Luckily my M-I-L HAD a little money and she had the payments for the first few years. We had looked into when we had to prepare the paperwork for Medicaid and we were told by the rep that when she got to the point where she only had 6 months of money left then to start the paperwork. When a person has them take over the monthly payments for the nursing home they are only allowed to have $4,000 left in their personal bank account - everything else has to be gone ( and accounted for too ) , then they only let my M-I-L keep $50/ month out of her Social Security check too to cover incidentials like phone , newspaper , cable TV while she was in the nursing home. That $50 didn't cover much more than her snacks and a haircut every few months , so we the kids picked up the rest. Thats the way it worked here in New York , I don't know if it changes by state or not. It would probably be a good idea just to go in and talk to them and find out for sure. Don't depend on this info or any other you find online when dealing with something as important as this. I'll be finding out about the laws in Florida next week though as my Mom and I are going to be looking at nursing homes and talking to Social Security there. Good luck with your pain and the nursing home stuff Jim ***************************************************** Posted by: " katrena_wooden " katrena_wooden@... Yesterday was a very trying day for me. Trying to help my family find a nursing home for my grandmother has increased my stress level. With the increase in stress comes an increase in pain. Mypain level today has been in the 7-9 range. It usually runs 3-4. I havean appointment with my doctor next Wedbesday. That's as soon as shecould get me in.
