Guest guest
Thanks. What is Sodium Ascorbate? Vitamin C that is a powdered form. You have to order it. I've seen some of the better tasting chewables like Rhino zinc and Chewy Bears (Nutrition Now i thinki) sometimes at Jewel/Osco but if you don't live near a natural food store your better off just ordering them online. Guest guest
Thanks. What is Sodium Ascorbate? Yes I really want to boost this winter, especially with a new baby coming in the next month! I don't give calicum to the kids but have always wondered if I should. I have always shopped Walmart for vitamins, never checked the net so I did not know where to get chewable forms. I especially want to give Zinc, that helps prevent them from getting sick while C gets them through it quicker. Bambi http://groups.msn.com/Homeschoolmoms Re: vitamins Do you use Ester C? What about echinacea? The sites I looked at did not reccomenend anything hardly for kids under 4! Thanks. Bambi No I use Sodium Ascorbate from Vitaglo http://store./vitaglo/760.html. Others on this list have posed studies on how Calcium Ascorbate could be harmful and I know they have posted how much to take depending on body weight. I lost the info in my computer switch over but you could search the archives for this list or maybe someone else has it on hand. Most of the vitamin companies won't publish over the FDA regulations for vitamins for little ones. It doesn't mean that you can't exceed many of the doses esp. during an illness (things like vit. C, Vit. A. zinc etc.) Hopefully more people more knowlegdeable than me will respond. L.

Guest guest
, There is a contraindication if the multivitamin contains iron. Iron interferes w/ the absorption of Ca+. One option is to use a MV w/o Fe, and take it at the same time as the Ca+. If it is a menstruating woman, and additional Fe supplement should be taken anyway, and can be taken at a separate time of day. I had a patient whose PCP recommended she leave her iron supplement off. He said he would watch her labs & if it got too low he would then ask her to intiate iron supplementation. I'm curious to see what others think about that. It seems you would want to avoid the problem instead of treating it later. Do most of you recommend iron for ALL menstruating women and pt's with hx of anemia? He also told her to continue sublingual B12 but to only take her 1000mcg dose qweek. He told her he would increase it if there were signs of defficiency. Does anyone recommend 100mcg just qweekly? Thanks for any feedback. I really learn a lot from this group. Guest guest
Very common you will see PCP want to treat a problem instead of preventing the problem from occurring in the first place. I usually advise to take multivitamin with iron and zinc which my surgeon agrees as well. We will supplement additional ferrous gluconate or fumarate if we see declined iron levels. The main problem is most doctors will recommend most to avoid iron in supplements as you age (GB patient or not). Unfortunately, most of these doctors do not understand the malabsorption component of the bypass surgery. There are enough scientific studies to back up your recommendations. I would contact or fax the PCP with your concerns and let them know you will closely monitor their labs (checking ferritin levels) since it is usually part of the protocol. I have worked with this population for 2 years and I check all labs after the follow ups visit and I've never run into problems these pt's having high iron levels. The trend is the complete opposite, iron is low with declining MCV/MCH levels beginning 3 weeks after surgery. Our protocol for sublingual B12 1000mcg: -only once a week for prevention -3 times per week is pt is a vegetarian or unable to tolerate meats and diary products - qd if B12 <240. Encourage patients to hold their vitamins the morning they come into clinic before they have their labs drawn. I've found many normal B12 levels but low MCV/MCH levels. I recommend to recheck labs again and some have come back as low as 140. The rule my surgeon and I tend to follow is prevention not treatment. GB patients have a more difficult time playing caught up from significant problems especially protein deficient and nutritional deficiencies. Lately, I've been having trouble getting my 6 year old son to take any type of liquid or chewable anything but I have been able to get him to swallow small pills. I can no longer get him to take any type of chewable vitamin. I've tried many different brands with no luck. Does anyone know of a small multi-vitamin made for children that can be swallowed? I've gone to a bunch of different stores but all the swallowable (is that a word?) one's are for adults only. It would have to be a pretty small one but there must be one out there somewhere.... Thanks in advance. in MA kdr2@...
Guest guest
The mutivitamin I am taking has no Selenium or Vit E in it at all, because it is a specially prepared vitamin that my husband takes (they gave him extra for his wife). He is a part of a study for prostate cancer (yes, he's fine, and I expect will remain fine, as he gets exams on a regular schedule through this study). It's heavy on the B vitamins, and except for the Selenium and Vit E (for which he takes pills from two other bottles that may be Vit E and/or Selenium, or may be a placebo) seems to be just the ticket for my needs. So I simply add 100 mg selenium and 400 Vit E, plus extra C, and a zinc tablet. Gail > Yay! Guest guest
Actually, Vitamin E is a blood thinner as is anything that is an asprin product. Just prior to surgery, most doctors ask you to stop taking these so you may want to check with your doctor about this, Moses. Your surgery is getting close. <smile> Alice > > I have mentioned earlier that I have had my HA adjusted to get higher volume. > I am hearing some, mostly garbled. Guest guest
Moses: I realize that I am a bit late in responding to this but I want to share with you what happened to my wife when she suddenly suffered vertigo and severe tinnitus about eight years ago...and went completely Deaf. She, like you, tried everything including mega vitamins. A friend of ours through a friend of hers was also suffering from tinnutus had suggested that Evie (My qidw) take vitamins. It had worked for our friend's friend but our friend did not fare so well and opted for CI. Evie had the doctor's permission and tried the vitamins out but it was absolutely to no avail and finally went under the knife the knife eight months after suffering vertigo while talking on the phone with her sister. She was born with moderate to severe (more on the severe side) and was about severe to profound at the time of the first vertigo attack. Evie had a difficult recovery with balance, dizziness and slight tinnutus. She's doing absolutely fabulously now. On a somewhat different note, Evie was a lesson for me having been a CI receipt for the past 20 years now. I was born profoundly Deaf and never wore hearing aids to a great extent. I had no problems with my two surgeries. She was the one who explained how the mapping should be, and after learning form her, my next mapping was so dramatically different that I was able to wear my CI more and more ... and now I have the 3G, I can have it on in noisy places especially restaurants that I couldn't do for over then years.
