Guest guest
Hi Kathi - Wondering how long you have been on Pentasa? I¹ve been really thinking of stopping it to see what happens. In the past it was never good and wondering if you child is still on it. Any input would be appreciated. Guest guest
He’s still on it, but just 2x a day (vs. 3). Since oct 2009. There are times we’ve taken him off of it, then we end up back on it b/c our GI wants him on something. Funny you ask b/c I just said to my husband 5 minutes ago…what do you think about stopping the pentasa NOW? We both never thought it did much, but my son is a big gut kiddo and at times he has flares and it’s always when we are thinking of stopping it. Dr. G wants him off of it, but we’ve taken him off most things (mb 12 shots, other supplements by mouth) and then LDN. Pentasa is next, but I have to get him more settled with his gut. When it comes to his gut no one knows what we’ve been through. He’s been horrendous since infancy, so we will go slowly. I am in the midst of really discussing this with Dr. G as most of the DAN! docs and others just kinda blew off our concerns, but they didn’t live with a little boy who screamed, banged his head on the floor and postured over our shoulders for hours in major pain and now that he’s 5 he also hits his head with his fists. SIBs, I think, are the worst form of communication that something is wrong and for Liam he can’t express his feelings yet even tho he started to use words several months ago. We can’t go back to that. Would love to hear if others were a pt of Dr. krigsman or buie, etc and if you took your child off pentasa what your thoughts are! Laureen….just to answer tho, we will be doing this soon and I can email you with our results;-) (say a prayer!) Guest guest
Funny, it's the same story for us. I had emailed Dr. Krigsman about 3 months ago to ask his opinion and he didn't think it would be a good idea. I'm seriously considering taking him off and see what happens. His GI has been great and we just did 2 rounds of antibiotics and that really helped too. And as Dr. Krigsman has said that antibiotics change up the flora and it does seem to help with IBD issues too. Whenever he was off of it - when we ran out and Dr. K's office was closed for a holiday it was not pretty. But I'm wondering now that he's doing so well if we tried taking him off - what would happen. I think I'm gonna try it and see maybe next week-end? Depends on how much we have going on too as we will stay close to home to be safe. One thing I recently found out as my son can now swallow capsules, I wasn't opening it up and putting it in Applesauce, the red cheeks became apparent so, the blue dye on the capsule definitely is not good for him. That took a few days for me to realize this past week as I couldn't figure out what it was. The one thing after we started Pentasa & Zantac with my son is he started sleeping through the night without melatonin which to me said a lot. I always knew it was tummy/GI issues with him when he was really little. He did grow a little and gain after starting but then plateaued again. I'm also wondering if now would be a good time because he has recently been diagnosed Growth Hormone deficient as I initially found out he was low due to Dr. Krigsmans testing for GI stuff. I finally went to an Endocrinologist and had the Stim Test done, and sure enough, it was not only GI issues that was causing no growth and little weight gain it was low GH. So, we started GH in June and the results have been amazing - and we have gotten some nice cognitive gains as well so that was a bonus! I have often wondered since he is now on GH if his GI stuff would be helped too as Dr. K said that IBD/Chron's/Colitis can cause low GH and we never had an in depth discussion about it as to what that actually means if it's low GH due to GI disease and how it affects the GI. Maybe I'll schedule a phone consult as I have not had one in over a year and it's too expensive to fly to see him for an appointment. When I decide to take him off, I'll certainly let you know how it goes too. Waiting for my husband to come home today to have a talk about it and see what he thinks. And say a prayer too!! Thank you and if anyone else has input - it would be nice to know. Wondering if the diet, working with the viral/immune will have effect on GI and my gut (pun intended) says the immune system lies in the gut and brain and we are working on all of those right now and have been for 1.5 years so to me, GI should improve too. Guest guest
Kathi, I too was afraid to stop the supplements. I know we had to be our own kids doctors for many years because there was no one else. We couldn't trust the doctors we saw to do the right thing for our children, but listen to Dr G. He knows what he is doing. Trust this man. He saved my kid. And your life will be so much easier and cheaper without all the supplements. Best, Marcia
