He's not on any meds like Ritalin. Just supplements, M-B12 shots,

glutathione, etc. No current chelation. No supplements have been added

lately.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but you should have him

tested for strep. Symptomatic and asymptomatic strep infections can

be associated with new onset of tics or OCD symptoms in children.

You may have heard of PANDAS - (pediatric autoimmune neurological

disorders associated with streptococcal infections?) I have a

friend whose son is part of an ongoing study at the NIH. The

hallmark of this syndrome is the acute onset of these symptoms.

Well, he had a lot of tonsilitis about 2 years ago, and the doctor

said that it was probably a strep infection.

He hasn't had a lot of recurrances lately, though, but he is prone to

sore throats. I've thought about having the tonsils removed, but I try

not to fix if if it ain't broke.

Hi,

My son does this thing with his throat. It's kind of a coughing

sound, like he's clearing his throat. He does it all day long every

day, even in the middle of sentences. I had the pediatrician look at

him and there was nothing wrong with his throat or his chest. His

behavioral Dr tells me he thinks it's a tic.

I have noticed that his tonsils seem to be much bigger than they are

suppost to be. His father had the same thing when he was a kid and

had to have them removed.

I am so glad to see that someone else's child picks at their nose, without

really picking it. We try to get my 8 yr old to stop, since it is a gross

behavior, but it is almost like he is unconsciously doing it.

Ocean nose spray till it clears up. This is usually done at school.. probably

to get out of class for a while.

That's all interesting. Sam also bites his nails, and I'm noticing

other small repetitive mannerisms and tics. I guess I'd just gotten

used to some of them. He also does that throat clearing thing, I

just never paid that much attention.

I was a terrible nail biter as a kid, til they bled. I have read

somewhere that there's something OCD-ish about that.

Technically, the research shows that stimulants do not *cause* tics,

but they definitely can exacerbate an existing tic disorder and/or

bring out tics in a child with a predisposition towards them.

Although TS gets a lot of negative publicity and people are initially

" horrified " to see their kid ticcing, a lot of parents with kids who

are significantly disabled by ADHD find that the tics are " minor "

compared to the ADHD and choose to use stimulants anyway. It's an

individual decision.

Hi all thanks for that about tics..... Because Chris's tics are very noticeable

especially the neck stretch, they want to deal with it before he goes to

intermediate next year as it is a much bigger school, so that kids don't hassle

him.

We go back on June 1st to increase the Prozac so will see what the doc says

then.

The blinking tic has just started in the last month about 3 months after we

began the Ritalin and the neck jerking has been happening since he was about 3

years old. This stopped last year for about a year and began again after he

started the Ritalin - so yes I will ignore the info I have read on the net

about stimulants not affecting tics......

Thanks all for your help and have a good weekend Jaxx (New Zealand)

Hello,

My son is 12,and we have been on this journey for 6 years with great

progress. For him, tics were caused by having any supplement with the

P5P form of vitamin B6. He tolerates pyridoxine fine. His tics were

jerking of the head, or repeating words. You might want to look at the

supplements your son is on. Sometimes it is good to stop all

supplements. Add them back in one at a time, watching for side effects

as you add them.

Hi , Thank you for replying. I did stop all supps EXCEPT

magnesium and calcium and I have stopped those since. Someone

mentioned it could be cal and that very well may be it. I started him

on cal a couple months ago hand have been so pleased he was doing well

with it. They were the only two I knew he was ok with. Duh.

It doesn't usually take me this long to figure things out. I mean I

always get stumped, but...I suck.

I wonder if Dana would be willing to take us in to get these supps

straightened out. Or maybe she would like to come here.

Thank you, .

At my house, most tics were related to yeast overgrowth.

Sometimes these symptoms were yeast overgrowth here, and sometimes

they were related to intolerances.

List what you are giving, and the symptoms you are seeing, and I will

give you ideas from my experience. Might take a few days tho, I was

away for the weekend so I have a lot to catch up on.

Is rubbing your eyes a tic? My son has been doing this for a year now, but it's getting more frequent lately. Doc says its not allergies, and its not an eye issue. Cold it be part of his sensory issues? Thanks

I got chills when I read your post. My 6-yr-old son started rubbing and rubbing

his eyes last week. i thought perhaps it was allergies, but will keep an eye

out to see when he begins doing it. Last week I noticed it while we were doing

homework... Will be interesting to see if there are other postings about this.

My son did this from around 4 to 4 1/2. It was definitely there & now it is

definitely gone. I don't know what caused it, or what caused it to stop.

Stopping coincided with all of the interventions we tried as we were learning

about his diagnosis. So, changes in diet, intro of cod liver oil, start of

sensory integration therapy, etc. My " Mom belief " is that it was a reaction to

milk. He now drinks milk, but on at most a bi-weekly basis, as opposed to a

daily basis. Also, he cycles through his OCD tics. Perhaps eye rubbing was just

one of those that got replaced by nail bed picking, or shirt chewing! When he

rubbed his eyes though, he was really rubbing hard & I was concerned about him

hurting them.

Good luck! I,too, will be interested in reading about other's experiences!

My son is also 6 yrs. old. He definitely does the eye rubbing mostly during

school. The eye doc said it can become a habit, like a tic. I first noticed it

last summer when the eye doc was doing a vision test on my son. The lights were

making him rub his eyes. It's been off and on since then, but some days he looks

like a raccoon from rubbing so much. Sunlight, school lighting, and reading are

all times that I think are the worst, but we'll keep watching.

My son does not rub his eyes, but is always plucking at the front of his shirt

(no matter which shirt) as though it is uncomfortable and needs adjustment. It

is definitely a nervous tic as he does it whenever he has to speak to

someone...even me.

It could be a sensory issue, or a tic I expect. Have you taken him to an eye

doctor? I was told I had something called Granulated Eyelid when I was about 9

years old. I was always blinking and squeezing my eyes shut because they didn't

feel right. Having done a little more research I'm not sure if that's really

what the problem was since it sounds like it isn't as easily treated as my

problem was.

My son also cycles through tics, each one usually lasting for about two months

or so. It's like that's how he develops his self-awareness about how his body

works. " Ooh, this is an interesting noise/feeling, I'll just do it over and

over. "

However, my son also did experience a similar eye-rubbing situation. He would

also complain a lot about headaches. We took him to an eye doctor who

specializes in non-traditional eye problems, especially in children. He

diagnosed (7) as having " convergence discoordination " . (Heaven forbid

my child should have anything as boring as nearsightedness.)

Anyway, the doctor said he often sees it in high-functioning AS/ASD children

because they focus so hard on reading, etc. that their eye muscles get fatigued.

Anxiety also makes the situation worse, as in 's case. By the end of the

day it's almost like they have crossed eyes. 's actual vision is

perfect, he just strains his eye muscles in school.

now wears glasses at school or during screen time (TV, computer, etc.)

and it's done the trick. The eye doctor said he probably won't have to wear the

glasses permanently, just until his eye muscles get retrained.

Please understand, I'm not suggesting this is the situation with anyone else's

child at all. Just wanted to share my experience. I had never heard of

convergence discoordination, but the treatment is painless and it's been so nice

to have my little guy headache-free!

We have seen our pediatrician and our eye doc, and they ruled out allergies. The

eye doc said it could be a habit, like a tic or dry eye, which he said is rarely

seen in children.

My son (ADHD/OCD/AS)tics. If he were to rub his eye, his " sensory " would make

him have to do the other eye so they'd feel the " same " , then his OCD would have

him rubbing them over and over to get it " right " . I find it hard to tell the

difference between the tics and the symptoms of the disorders.
