Hi. I am new to this group, I have been reading some older posts in hopes of

findings some help for my 6.5 yr old nonverbal daughter. I came across a post

discussing SSRI's and this caught my attention.

Here is our story, please read. Any suggestions/thoughts are welcome:

My daughter was typical until 32mths of age. Then she began regressing across

the board. No one was able to explain why a child that met every milestone

until 32mths of age was all of a sudden presenting with autistic like features

and why her speech and language was similar to a stroke patient. No

treatment/therapy worked & all tests came back " normal " . On paper she was fine.

2 years ago her EEG showed " surges " and she had no FMAER (test that confirmed

she was not understanding speech/language-yet her hearing was fine). Lamictal

was started and it cleared her EEG. Much to everyone's suprise it did nothing

for speech or language. Since starting the lamictal she is more receptive to

learning. Tantrums have decreased and she is happier.

My daughter's sleep is AWFUL. Always has been, she was a colicky baby. As a

toddler her sleep got better but wasn't great. When she regressed my daughter's

sleep took a turn for the worse, couldn't fall asleep and couldn't stay asleep.

We just had a sleep study done about 3wks ago. My daughter only slept for 3 hrs,

I was told she was going through all cycles of sleep and her sleep was fine. My

daughter takes 25mg of trazdone and 1.5mgs of melatonin to sleep at night. I

should add that my daughter's sleep meds need to be increased/changed frequently

or else her body gets use to to the medication and it's not as effective.

Tonight when I read about SSRI's, it got me wondering if anyone used SSRI's to

help promote sleep and if the SSRI's helped with speech/language and cognition?

Any suggestion/thoughts are welcome.

Please do not let this deter you but our son has huge insomnia issues with

ssris. Despite the insomnia, he is doing well with the addition of ssri med.

Hildy,

SSRI's helped with speech. Melatonin can help sleep.

Hildy-

My son is about 6.5 years old too. He started on Paxil (an SSRI) about 3 months

ago. The improvement in his language and cognitive abilities have been amazing.

He was not nonverbal when we started, but his speech was very delayed (at a 1

year old level). His therapist is now amazed and very enthusiastic about his

ability to be able to catch up in the future. His understanding of various

concepts has increased dramatically.

I have a feeling the SSRI might help your daughter and she might benefit from

the protocol. I understand that even older kids (older than yours and

mine- even teens) have been able to develop speech with the protocol. I

would encourage you to look into it (not only the SSRI but all other aspects of

the protocol- such as the diet, anti-virals, etc). Given her history, her

regression may be the result of issues with her immune system.

Hi Hildy,

My son (5.5 yrs) is also mostly non-verbal (he tries a lot, but we can't

understand much of anything he says, so often he gives up). We started him on

the SSRI Paxil in November 2010, about one month before we visited Dr. G for the

first time. My son has always been a good sleeper, but I've heard from other

parents that the SSRIs really help a lot with sleep regulation. As for my son,

after about 3 weeks on Paxil, he was much more energetic, happier, and finished

potty training on his own. In the past few months, his pronunciation has

improved quite a bit (mostly with prompting still) and his spontaneous

interactions and answering of questions has improved greatly. Hope this helps!

I wonder how Dr G and Dr R know which SSRI to start off with. Do they have a

list of which one to try first? I know my son was on Zoloft when he was 3 yrs

old and it made him hyper. He was on Tenex too and that didn't help calm him

down. So I took him off all meds. He was hyper but not as hyper with the

Zoloft.

Reading your post Dr. Goldberg started my grandson today on Paxil CR 12.5 mg. he

was on prozac doing ok his viral count is high(haven`t got test in hand yet) but

very concerned about the inc.in HHV6(since Ph. consult 2 wks. ago he inc. his

Famvir. My guess the change in SSRI he wanted to see more blood flow we are not

getting with the use of prozac.

He is having such sensitivity to light Dr. G says this is viral but says he

should be seen by his eye doctor can`t get til May.

He didn`t do well with Paxil before praying this will be the one to help him.

Is your children on this type of Paxil? If so what are you seeing?

Would like to hear from parents of older children doing these SSRI`s he is now

12 going on 3 yrs. on this protocol. He is doing better & we feel this is the

treatment for him.

Thanks Holly.

I have an appointmetn with my neuro in April and will ask what his thougths are

about using SSRI's with my daughter.  I just  ordered Dr. G's book..I am

looking forward to reading it and learning more about the approach.  I am

reading bits & pieces from old messages that were posted so I think I have a

VERY basic idea of what it is all about but don't entirelly understand it.

Forgive my ingnorance BUT where do Panda's fall into the philosophy?  How

would Dr. G test & treat for Panda's?  Could a child have Panda's & take

SSRI's?

Thanks,

Hildy
