Can anyone share pros and cons of the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) vs. the

low oxalate diet (LOD)? We currently follow GFCF or my 2.9 year old son but we

are ready to take the next step because of ongoing chronic loose stools

(although he's starting to make great progress). I've removed very high oxalate

foods already and am also taking some cues from the diet (have stopped

berries, all nuts, tropical fruits and am trying to lower carbs dramatically).

But I am gearing up to make larger changes (gathering recipes, buying

ingredients etc..) and now feel torn between SCD vs LOD. I understand that SCD

is less compatible with since it relies on nut flours for baked goods (in

later stages of the diet).

Any perspectives or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sylvia

you can use coconut flours and therefore would make it both SCD and LOD--that's

what we do and saw great improvements

Hi Sylvia,

We've done gfcf, then scd, then on top low phenol and LOD. Basically, now I

just call my son's diet the Liam diet. Our foundation is SCD (been on it 2

years in May), but I take out what bothers him and right now since we are

seeing Dr. G, no nuts (I think they really bothered my son anyway). You do

all meats, fish, ckn, veggies (just watch and do spinach = high ox once in a

while), fruits. So you'll need to do all of these things with ANY of these

diets, then slowly add whatever your son tolerates (whether it's some bread

2x a week or rice 2x or potato 2x-dr. G will help you with this through some

igg4 testing), but I'd start with that foundation. If you do, you should

really read Breaking the Viscous Cycle, so that you understand the science

behind it and how the gut ecology is going to change.

Just some thoughts as you'll slowly customize his diet to what he can

tolerate while removing most/all sugar, colorings, preservatives, additives,

which all these diets limit or don't contain (as our children mostly don't

tolerate anyway). Lastly, to reduce the oxaltates and/or phenols, it really

helps to rotate items, so as an example, spinach once a week and carrots

maybe twice, etc. I make a 4 day rotation as much as I can and some foods

are just once a week. If you write down, by category everything your child

can eat and tolerates, then you can mix and match and have meat or

fish/veggie/fruit every day and then you repeat the rotation once it's

complete.

Hth,

Kathi

Hi Sylvia,

I had my son on a GF/CS diet for over 4 months because of our son's issues with

terribly loose stools. It did not change on that diet so I switched to the SCD

diet and he still continued to have chronic loose stools. It was driving myself

crazy!!!! Since our visit with Dr. Goldberg last month I switched our son to

follow the diet. I almost felt like we were going backwards at first.

Our sonis so happy on it and I can report he has been having much better

stools on this diet!! He has one BM a day verses 4-6 mushy one. It is more

formed, but not always and his body seems to be regulating and he is having his

bm the same time almost everyday.

He is now allowed to have rice crispies in the morning with goats milk. Morning

snacks consist of protein (any meat) steamed peas, carrots, & 1 serving of

fruit. Lunch is usually a peanut butter sandwich (wonder bread and cheap peanut

butter), snacks- hamburger with reduced sugar ketchup, vegetables, and some

plain potatoe chips. Dinner- any meat, vegetables, and once a week pasta or

white rice. After dinner snack- a small 1 serving of fruit. AND LOTS OF WATER

throughout the day.

Hope this helps!

Very best,

Margaret
