Guest guest
My husband broke his neck almost 4 years ago. He had surgery 3 years ago (double fusion). He has never had a single day without pain. Doctors have been prescribing Morphine and codeine from the beginning. Yesterday he went to his pain doctor for a routine appointment and the doctor told him very quickly that as from Wednesday he will begin detox with the aid of Suboxone. We were not prepared for this and the appointment was very brief. Detox has been mentioned before, but anyone who mentioned it said he would need 2-3 weeks in hospital. I think there was something else going on in the office as the doctor more or less just left us to get on with it!!! My question is this, has anyone else been detoxed this way and if so what can we expect. I am very concerned and would like any advice that will help me help my husband through this very scary time. I also have a friend who has used Subutex (another form of it) for heroin addiction, and it has worked for him, and he has been clean for 2 yrs.... So give it a try and I hope your husband does well with it.... **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. Guest guest
Thank you for answering and the offer. I have sent you an email and look forward to talking to them. I cannot tell you how scared I am for him, but also scared for me and my children as we have never seen anyone detox and do not know what to expect. >Please e-mail me at bennie@... and I will give you a e-mail > address of someone who is in their third week of this. It seems she was told matter of fact that she is going on it with this substance. >
Guest guest
Suboxone is really just another pain med formulated with something in it to prevent abuse. I can't remember the technical details, but go to the suboxone.com website for info on the medication. I was detoxed on it over a 3 week period 3 years ago. For me, it went great, I was scared also. What happens (or should happen) is that you stop taking your morphine and codeine completely, then AS SOON as you begin to become uncomfortable, that is having withdrawel symptoms, you begin on the Suboxone, probably around 10 mgs. twice a day. It immediatly (within an hour) stops the withdrawel symptoms and also provides pain relief. Then you are scaled down on the doseage every 3 to 4 days until you don't take it anymore. That's how it's supposed to work, and it did for me. There is no need for hospitalization, BUT a dr should monitor you at least once a week if not more throughout the whole thing. Don't let anyone try to talk you into a detox center - they are expensive rip-offs, have you going to AA meetings 3 times a day and preach to you. Detox or rehab is for alcoholics and addicts, and they will treat you as one, even if you're there just for medical detox. 3 to 4 weeks in one will cost you a minimum of $10,000 After I was detoxed, I was off all pain meds for 3 months, could not take it. I was put back on Suboxone, 30 mgs a day for pain releif and it worked great! But my insurance would not pay for it for that use, so I had to switch back to morphine. It sounds like your dr. is not being straight with you. Suboxone can only be prescribed by drs. who have a special license for it and have been through addiction management training.
