Guest guest
In July I had a cyst removed from my spine and three vertebrae fused with rods and screws. They though that that could have been causing most of my pain. I also was given an Orthofix Spinal-Stim Bone Growth Stimulator to wear to help every thing heal faster. I got a bill from the Orthofix people for $600. It seems that device cost $4,445 plus tax, the $600 was my copay. Out of couristy I looked at eBay. A brand new one, just like mine, sells for $595 from the same people. If the doctor had given me a prescription I could have had a new one with $60 co pay before I ever got out of the hospital. Is it just me that smells a rat in this? Ok I'm down off my box again. ronpat

The hospital who gave you the device must have thought it medically necessary and should have gotten pre-approval from your insurance so that it would have been covered. Raise some hell with your insurance company. Meanwhile, be sure to contact the Orthofix billing office and tell them that you are trying to resolve it with your insurance so that they can put a hold on your account and won't start harrassing you if you don't pay right away. They just want to be paid, and will be happy to wait a while for the insurance. I've had to battle tons of these kinds of " errors " and always get them resolved. Sometimes my cynical side thinks the insurance companies deliberately refuse things they are supposed to accept because they expect most people won't know their rights or just won't bother to complain and they'll save themselves some money on at least a portion of the claims. It's just happened too often to me not to think this! Cheryl in AZ Moderator
