Guest guest
HOLD ON...high referring to high's and lows in medication..you know peaks and valley's not high as in smoke pot high. Sorry i wasnt clear. But short acting meds do have peaks and valley's highs and lows, where as long acting meds you don't have that as much. You do have break thru pain.......Deb RN Debra in St. Louis

Sorry i wasnt clear. Thanks for clarifying that, Debra! I misread your earlier message too, thinking you meant the other " high. " You're absolutely right about the peaks and valleys - I call that the " rollercoaster effect. " The short-acting meds definitely put you on that " roller coaster " of good pain control for a couple of hours, followed by increasing pain as it wears off before you can take the next dose. And some " long-acting " meds aren't much better. My pain doc told me that the majority of Oxycontin's medication is released into the system in the first 90 minutes, but then it has to last 8 or 12 hours! I've been really happy since being switched to Kadian - long-acting morphine - it has really consistent pain control, so much so that I can even go several hours past a dose and not notice my pain increase. That really improves my quality of life. Cheryl in AZ Moderator
