Speech reading is a trip. If it doesn't start making any sense I just nod

and smile. But then that doesn't work because when they ask, " Can you

understand me?! " and I just nod and smile. Trippy....

Hi June & Crew,

I continued to get some practice (but not much) when I enrolled

at Gallaudet University (5 years).<-----wow, you must Sign pretty well if

you went to Gallaudet since it's the only university for the Deaf in the

United States. I'm curious though, did the Cutlurally Deaf acept you for

being late deafened? You're understand world more than the Deaf. I'm curious

how people at Gally took that?

And people that mumble or don't

move their lips much when they speak drive me nuts :(.<-----yeah, I have a

problem who what I call a " Ted Koppel " too =). It's also when they have a

heinous beard of mustache that gets to me. Or when they talk so fast and

expect me to keep up.

I do alot better with small groups than I do with large groups <---I do well

in small groups too and that's when individual people will assume that I'm

hearing because " you speak so well, how could you be Deaf?! " It really

annoys me at times.

Hiya

a)Gallaudet - well, I'm not sure that I was really ACCEPTED by the real DEAF

community. I had my own friends and most of them became deaf later in life

or were not natural signers. So, basically, I just did my own thing.

Regarding the siging skills...I remember that I went to Gallaudet the June

before I enrolled as a freshman and took a sign class with hearing people.

Then, Gallaudet has what is called the New Signers Program for new students

before the semester begins. I went to that too. So basically, I was better

prepared than a lot of other first time students.

b)hairy faces - YES, I can't stand beards and mustaches either. GROAN!! :o(

c)speaking - I have never really stopped speaking. I love a good

conversation :o)

BUT, I did do less speaking when I was a student at Gallaudet. You can sign

better if you don't voice.

There you have it. Let me know if I can be of more help...

June
