Guest guest
Speech reading is a trip. If it doesn't start making any sense I just nod and smile. But then that doesn't work because when they ask, " Can you understand me?! " and I just nod and smile. Trippy.... Guest guest
I think your either good at it or not, I went into surgery w/normal hearing and came out deaf. I had no idea this would happen so I was kind of pushed into lip reading with no option. I think before this happened I was in the habit of just watching peoples lips because I knew eventually going deaf might happen but it was more of a unconscious thing. I'm really good at reading others and never had any classes or such. I know there was a topic a while back if you faked it with others. I never fake it with family and friends. If I'm out on the street and someone starts talking to me, if I know I'll never see them again and their hard to read, I'll fake it just to get it over with. I do agree with others that if people talk strange or mumble, its like being totally deaf :-) I sometimes don't think of myself as deaf because I do read people so good but it does take concentration on my part. The biggest thing I think is, you really wont know how good you are till your totally deaf, I tried it with hearing and was awful at it. -Earl,
