I have found a supplier for cut Stephania root.

Would like to know how others have used.

What amount of herb is used to what amount of water when preparing?

How much of the decoction do you drink?

Are there special considerations like time of day, empty stomach, etc?

Thanks Edie

I have been using this stephania root for several months. The best source of

information about it is Stephan Buhner's book Healing Lyme.

The dosage is 5-10 grams when making a decoction. I would suggest the low dose

to start, I had a very significant herx for 3 weeks on it. I have gradually

gone up to 8 grams a day, but am now back to 5 grams a day.

What I do is weigh out the amount of cuttings, and put them in a stainless steel

pot with a scant quart of water. I bring it to a boil and then cover and simmer

for 1 hour. I then pour out the decoction into two cups--it makes about that

much when you figure out the right amount of water--and discard the used root

pieces. I drink one cup in the morning and one cup in the evening. It is

better to drink it warm, but I don't do that at night as I don't want to

microwave and it is a bother to heat it.

It is better to make this fresh every day than make it in advance.

It does taste quite bitter but I have not had it cause problem with my stomach.

The book does not say it needs to be taken with or without food. I've done it

both ways. I often take a spoonful of peanut butter to mask the bitter

aftertaste.

I was concerned about this causing lyme to encyst. My sense in reading about

how this herb works is that it does have very minor antimicrobial properties.

But the main thing it does is correct some of the immune system issues that

borrelia messes up. So I think that my immune system is going after borrelia

more effectively. Does that encyst lyme? Probably to some degree, but I think

the whole point of treatment of lyme is to help my immune system be able to cope

by itself. Once I have my lyme load decreased way down and I am ready to also

go off stephania, hopefully continued rife will clear out any more spirochetes

as they come out of cyst.

I should say that other than the initial herx, when I had to cut back on rife

treatments, within a month I was back to regular rife treatments and herxing as

usual but the difference was that I was able to make quicker progress. I also

have seen some full moon responses. So I don't think the stephania has

particularly encysted lyme like abx do.

Thanks for the info. So if I want to start with a 5mg dose, am I correct that I

need to weigh out 5g of the root to prepare the decoction? Just want to be sure

as I have only prepared herbs that were pre-measured into correct dose.

The cut stephania root that I have is little chunks of root, some slices, etc.

So the only way to take it is in decoction. If you have the same type of thing,

I would see what the dosage weight is. Since the dosage range is 5-10 grams for

decoction, that is something you will need to figure out by trial. (Actually I

muscle test myself for the dose.) I would start slowly and work up. For me the

herx came on several days down the road.

So from my experience, yes I would weigh the individual bags and find out how

much is in them. You might have to break these up differently.

If you have a powder form, the dosage may be different. The book says if you

have powder and encapsulate, use 1-4 " 00 " capsules 3-4 times a day, beginning at

the lowest dose and work up.

That is not specifically mentioned in the source I have read. It may depend on

what is causing the lightheadedness. Stephania is listed to help with Bell's

Palsy, neuroborreliosis, lyme arthritis, and ocularborreliosis.

You might look into gingkgo biloba which might help improve circulation in the

head/brain. However, there could be many causes of the this symptom in my

opinion. Such as low potassium for example.
